The future for the Horns' football program

We get it already... the glass is NOT half full, it's entirely empty except for about a half...

However, I'm not going to criticize the whole post too much, because I loved this so much:

Help is on the way.

I have a meeting scheduled tomorrow morning with DeLoss, Mack, and Greg.

If I don't get a satisfactory explanation on why the UT program has gone into the national crapped, some heads WILL roll.

Now, are all you naysayers happy??

Hook you

I agree with most of your post.
Another guy we missed on was Chancey Aghare (LSU last year).

I dont think there is a lack of talent. The secondary has a ton of talent, it just had the best seats in the house. I think with the addition of the 2 new coaches we have a rejuvenated energy since VY left. I think there are some things Mack does that I disagree with. I love the hard hat award and other things that the coaches are doing to create competition and energy. We need it badly. I want 1 vs 1 in practice too. I hope to see a more aggressive attitude/play calling with GD now that MA will have some say.
Talent is not the problem. We have to use is correctly. I think there are about 5-8 schollies on the team that I think we could have upgraded had we waited till signing day, but we/I dont know how hard some of them work in practice to make the starters better.
I think Mack made a mistake with Shepard like he as done in the past. We should take the best players at all positions and the best guy plays. Dont give a crap if you are a 5* or a 2*. RS should have been given the opportunity to try to play QB at UT. If he is good, great, if not move to another position. It is possible that Mack told GG that he would not offer another QB this year.
I dont want 10 wins to be a goal anymore than you do. I am frustrated too at times b/c I feel we as fans have higher expectations than that coaches (not true, Im sure). It is soo frustrating b.c we are sooo close to being sooo much better. I think the changes in coaches and attitude will make us better. 08 will be a hard year but I fully expect to win the big 12. 09 I think will be MNC or bust. Everything is set for us that year. But I think even this year, we have the talent/coaching/schedule to win the big 12 and should.
I think things are changing for the better. The practices b4 the bowl game was a start. Lets hope that continues.

I agree that the horns are better off with a dual threat QB. My guess is that GD and Mack also agree because they have worked very hard to get Colt to run more. Spread offenses are taking over college football and it is much easier to run effectively out of a spread if the QB is mobile and presents some threat to run (i.e. his running has to be accounted for by the opposition D).

Once Gilbert committed, it was unlikely the horns were going to get Sheppard.

I would not be surprised if the horns lose 3 games again this year because the schedule is so tough. The D should be better with Muschamp at the helm. The special teams should be better with Akina resuming control. Major should make a difference on O but there was a major talent loss on O (Hills, Sweed, Finley, and Charles) so it will be a challenge for the O to improve over 2007.

Mack seems to be rejuvenated since the A&M loss (i.e. the fantastic victory over ASU in the Holiday Bowl, the tough love approach to coaching, and the hiring of Muschamp and Major) so I am cautiously optimistic that Mack is vigorously resisting that long, slow decline before retirement that nearly everybody endures toward the end of their careers.

Of course, the initial premise seems to make very light of the fact that the offensive line last year was a triage unit... added to that is that the year before, we graduated 3 offensive line players who played in the NFL this past year. We lost another good lineman to grades... then, injuries decimated the offensive line the entire year... it seemed like every week, players were being moved and shuffled to different positions.

Out of all units, continuity and playing as one group, the offensive line is crucial that it remains largely intact.

As unpredictable as th pass defense was last year, it was turnovers that killed Texas last year. The KSU was unbearable, what 5 or 6, Jamaal fumbling inside the ou 5 yard line. Texas has all the talent, tougher defense and holding on to the ball would definetely make this year extremely exciting.

Mack Brown and Greg Davis haven't won the ACC or Big XII without a dual-threat QB not named Vince Young either, so by kchorn's logic we're screwed unless Vince Young clones himself. The idea that just having some guy who was a dual-threat QB was important that having, specifically, Vince, is laughable. Would we have gone undefeated in 2005 with Quincy Carter or Stephen McGee?

IMHO, all that matters is won - loss records, conference championships, and BCS Bowl records. When you want to analyze further you need only look at 2 stats to figure out where help is needed; points scored and points allowed. All else is purely numbers.

IMO if Texas wants to have a passing QB then change the offense to one that is more suited to a passing game. If Davis wants to run a ZR the recruit a dual threat QB. Or a least run a two RB attack. Ten wins does not mean as much today with longer seasons. Like the 1000 yd rusher more games played.

As long as Texas has a quarterback who is a threat (much less a dual threat) to other teams more than he is to Texas, we'll be okay.

Every year ain't gonna be '05, and every quarterback here ain't gonna get a confetti shower like Vince. Every quarterback here under Mack has a better chance most years of making it to a game that counts than at most other places around the country.

That doesn't suck.

A slow, evident decline?

No, just an increasingly rapid death spiral in the ability of sports fans, broadly speaking, to maintain any sort of perspective -- especially historical.

While some of the issues discussed may be real, the overall description of where the program stands is so laughable that it makes me think maybe you have been paying too much attention to Britney Spears.

Lay off the hyperbole. Texas has had a couple of years that weren't as good as what was arguably the best season any of us have ever seen. If that's so bad, maybe you ought to go seek consistency in something more stable, like the visible surface of Enchanted Rock.

On second thought, after a short break for ice cream ...

Britney Spears? Holy ****. What a useless and completely inappropriate analogy.

And to think I came over here to relax after grading a bunch of really crappy collegiate papers all night.

one would assume we would need a bad *** dual threat qb to win considering we've only have 1 big 12 title in Mack's 10 yrs and that was with a dual threat bad ***. But statistics lie sometimes.

Man this is really looking at things as glass half empty.

Chykie Brown, John Chiles, Curtis Brown, Tray Allen, Sam Acho, Buck Burnette, Brandon Collins, Kyle Hix, Michael Huey, Blaine Irby, Eddie Jones, Josh Marshall, Vondrell McGee are all only sophomores. To pick any of their names out and say for instances that Chykie Brown, John Chiles, Eddie Jones, etc have been conspicuous "by their lack of presence" just doesn't make sense to me.

This team currently is very young and extremely talented. Add in new coaches Applewhite and Muschamp and we have two great new young coaches that will be here to bring them along. This is exciting stuff....not gloomy stuff.

This team has 23 sophomores that contains 11 four star players and 3 five star players. Much of that talent is just starting to hit the field. There is also a ton of talent in the Freshman class which currently contains 14 RS Freshman and has 9 four star players....Add in about 8-12 guys from the 08 class and that will approach 22-26 players in that class...which will again be loaded with talent.

Now that you see the Sophmore and Freshman classes loaded with talent you have to give them time. This year should be a very good year. But 2009 and 2010 will the great years for this team. In 2009 those classes will be Juniors and Sophomores and will be heavily in the starting rotation....a few of the current Juniors will still be around like Beasley, Hall, Houston, Kindle, Norton, McCoy, Muckelroy, Ulatoski. In 2010 those 2 classes will be seniors and Juniors and this will be the deepest and most talented that Texas has ever been and especially in the upperclassmen classes.

This is what Texas is building right now. A program that all indications show will be a very good team in 2008 and that will be a real contender in 2009 and 2010.

let me save you all a bunch of time... here is the summary of kchorn's position on GD and the Horns football team

[kchorn]WIthout another Vince Young we have no running game and we suck and GD sucks.[/kchorn]

the facts about our running success will not sway him.... the facts of passing vs running and what someone considers a "dual threat" QB or not will not sway him....

just be honest with yourself and say that you think we'll never win another MNC without a VY clone.. it is cool if you think that way... 100% flawed, but at least we wouldn't be subjected to the constant barrage of misinformation and lack of understanding of the offensive game...
