The Cheering at today's game

We knew the arkie swine were going to try to rattle the team.
Kudos to the cheerleaders today. with not many fans there we could still hear Horn cheers on every possession.
I know the team is aware of it too.

The key was getting off to the good start and muzzling the hog fans. By the time the Horns were playing catch the greased pig at the end, the crowd wasn't a factor.

The few hundred Horns that are here in North Little Rock made as much noise as we could today.

After all the hoopla in the local Little Rock press about Barnes' "joke", I thought the Hogs would persist with their Texas hate much longer than they did. But they got very quiet after Texas took a 15 point lead, and the place was virtually devoid of Hogs at the end of the game.

BTW, Alltel Arena is a dump. The scoreboard looked like a 1960's reject, almost impossible to read from our Section 118, Row 8 seats. The "luxury" suites looked small; the concession lines were impossibly long for much of the day; and the area around the arena is a seedy, run-down industrial area. The FEC looks like the Taj Mahal in comparison.

Arkansas has some beautiful rural areas. I used to go camping up there years ago, but I'd always be sure to take my bow and arrows and a blow up Ned Beatty doll in case I ran across any deliverance types in the woods.

Fox Sports Radio interviewed Coach Haith (yeah, him) about his game, our game and his best friend status with Coach Barnes to this day. The topic of Coach Barnes' comments came up as well. Haith said that the moment he read it he knew he was joking around and it is sad that arky fans did not.

He said that there was a good loud contingent of Texas fans there that represented. So props to yee.

I would also think that there's lots of anti-Horns Memphis fans there since that's almost a home game for them....and they would look similar, just wearing blue.

Well, I don't completely agree with the sentiment on this thread.

1) The Alltel Arena is not plush, but the 16,000 seats have much better sightlines than the FEC.

2) The concourse is huge. I mean huge. It's at least 2x as wide as the concourse at the FEC.

3) The food is decent for arena fare...or at least, the food at McAlister's Deli, which is where I went. I didn't find the lines long at all. Of course, I didn't go there during halftime. I went there before the game and at the 16:00 minute mark of the second half. Bathroom visits were quick, but again, I didn't try at halftime.

4) Little Rock has been an outstanding host. I came here with great trepidation, arriving on Wednesday expecting the worst, but finding a hospitable populace going out of their way to please.

Little Rock is prettier than I remember, and North Little Rock is slightly upscale. Hotel accomodations have been excellent, and for a reasonable price.

Sure, there's been some booing. Of about 2000 folks who showed up for the Longhorn shootaround, I'd say about 100 of them gave UT some resounding boos. Coach Barnes even went out of his way to go up in the stands to talk to a group of about 50, where he good naturedly asked them, "So, you're going to be supporting Texas tomorrow during the game, right?" They smilingly answered with some boos and inverted Horn signs, which the local cameramen quickly captured for the local news.

At the game, Barnes pretended to cower behind a security guard when he entered the arena to a chorus of boos, slapping the guys shoulder after they separated. He also talked to the Austin Peay coach for a while, smilingly gesturing at crowd in the arena.

The Austin Peay cheerleaders cleverly started the distinctive "Pig Sooie" chant before the game, which the Arkansas fans joyously joined in with.

However, in the second half, with Austin Peay down 22, they tried it again, and it fell flat this time.

It's important to note Little Rock is not Fayetteville. There's a harder core, edginess about the Longhorn hate in that part of the country that doesn't exist to nearly the same degree in Little Rock.

5) While the downtown area has some rougher parts, Little Rock has actually done an outstanding job of rehabilitating the area. The Rivermarket is a neat downtown area with plenty of clubs and dining establishments. It's a city with rolling hills and trees everywhere. In the area I'm staying, I've found a terrific sports bar that I wish I could move brick by brick to Texas, so I could frequent the place during college football season. It's the best sports bar I've been in since the SRO on Westheimer in Houston closed, in terms of seeing the maximum number of games in a comfortable atmosphere, with a decent drink selection and decent food.

All in all, it's been a fantastic trip. I'm not saying everyone should make Little Rock their next vacation destination. What I am saying is that if you're forced to stay here for business or other travel, you shouldn't dread the experience. The folks here have been fantastic, and it has more to offer than you might expect.

Puddle, try and get out a little.

Arkansas plays at one of the premier venues in the country. It's called Bud Walton Arena, is on campus, seats 20k, is full of luxury suites, elegant concourses, houses a museum, stores, and is 3 hours away from Alltel Arena.

Walton Arena is one of the nicest basketball arena's in the country, professional or college.

SL Xpress, Im sorry I didnt come out and hang with you guys at the west end after the game, I will be there on Sunday though.

Your right about the West End though... That place is an incredible place to watch sports. Try the barbeque chicken nachos. they are awesome.

Alltel isnt that bad. THe Hog fans that gave me flak for being a Horn fan was all in good nature. It was a great day to be wearing orange... there was lots of nice sports talk and it is cool to know that despite us not being in the same conference for over a decade, we still have a rivalry. I actually applaud Barnes for getting it into that next gear.

Who cares about luxury boxes? It's not like I am going to sit in one of those. Ever.

I need to go pass out.

What is it about SEC fans and pictures of arenas and stadiums?

I don't want to see pictures of Bud freakin' Walton Arena. I know it's nice. I don't care.

gooshorn,

No big deal. We had a great time getting together with about 20 Longhorn fans. It was really something when a couple of guys from this board proceeded to start up chants from all the various Big 12 teams, especially when they did the Aggies' chants yelling --- "and that's what you guys signed up for for the next 10 years!"

The bar was filled with Razorback fans that came in to watch Arkansas beat Indiana. Tons of "Pig Sooie" calls all night long.

As far as getting together after the game on Sunday...uhm...I'm starting the drive back to Houston as soon as the game ends. I've enjoyed Little Rock, and I like the West End a bunch, but I don't like either of them enough to stick around after the game is over. I'm going to want to get home. Thanks for the invite, though.

Other than the guy who caught the ball on that terrible pass...Did you guys see many Miami fans? It didnt really look like there were any in the crowd.

How do the tickets work for Sunday? Does the same ticket work for our game and the Memphis game? If so I expect it to be much more anti-Longhorn with a tougher opponent and Piggie and Memphis fans in attendance. Although...I'm not sure what time Arkansas plays on Sunday so perhaps Piggie wont be there.

As one person already said...I think most Longhorn fans are saving their money for Houston and hopefully San Antonio. I was worried we would have no one in North Little Rock.....and btw...What the heck is North Little Rock?

The cost eventually far, far exceeded 30 million. 30 Million broke ground and threw up walls.

30 Million was "discussed" with the Walton Family in reference to money that would need to be raised before ground could even be broken. Not too mention the countless upgrades and dollars that continue to be poured into the facility.

You don't like seeing photos of Walton? Don't look at them. They were posted because one of your longtime, highly opinionated posters thought that Arkansas played at Alltel.

If you were on Hogville and we were trying to figure out why Texas played basketball at the the Bell County Expo Center you may want to clarify too.

In the end though, it doesn't matter. It really doesn't. If you think the FEC is half the facility that BWA is, well, keep your head in the sand. I just wanted to clarify to a poster that LR is not home to the U of A.

marley and all Horns fans who were there and will be there.
THANK YOU
I did not mean to leave you out. They didn't show many crowd shots but we saw some pockets of Burnt Orange.
Represent us well tomorrow

The funny thing is that it seemed no Arkansas fan here realizes they pushed the UT football trip to Fayetteville to 2014, but they didn't like Barnes's comments. Oh well.

The loudest boos yesterday came when Barnes was introduced. The second came when the players trotted onto the court for the first time. A close third was when the UT band showed up.

The saddest thing was that four fans were sitting up midway up the second deck wearing burnt orange shirts with upside-down horns. These guys seriously need a new rival. We've moved on.

West End was great. Good seeing everyone. All the Arkie fans I've run into have been good-natured, and some actually have straight teeth.

I travel to Little Rock & Hot Springs each twice a year, and I totally agree with your comments. I've had a few Razorbacks notice my bumpersticker (and shirt, pants, hat ect..) and say a few things, but it has almost always been in jest.

To me, it's kinda like going to Oklahome. Sure, they're are alot of jerks in Norman, put, if you're outside of that area, most of the people are pretty cool. They'll say something, but its only in a friendly manor.
