Because of the bad luck of having to play substitute players in the field, Cliff is now 2-3. Looking back at my original statement, it really still is up in the air whether he will have a winning record.
I still believe he's a great pitcher, but wow, what bad luck.
if Kinsler was playing, we'd have sewed it up. Arias mistake was the equivalent of a fumbled ppunt return. Can't give a team - a real good team like TB xtra at bats like that deep in a game. Nitemares of Craig Curry ran thru my mind tonight
Kramer, I should have taken you up on your bet, BUT, even I am surprised at a 2-4 record. I really though he might end up right around .500, never dreamed his record could be .333. He might still hit .500, but with the lack of support he's been getting, it's going to be dicey.
I guess he has 8 more starts. If he wins half, loses 2 and has 2 no decisions, that puts his record at 6-6.
Of course the real factor in contract negotiations should be how he performs in the playoffs.
wow, another loss underway. I'm thinking he's not coming back, unless he turns it around in the postseason. He's gonna want way too much money for such a poor record. His ERA is slowly going up also.
if cliff lee had been traded to the yanks instead....
we don't beat tampa..in fact, we play the yanks in the first round b/c they had cliff for 3 months.....either feldman, club douche or holland starts as #4 starter in his place.... yanks WITH cliff is a different team by a mile.....we'd be watching the yanks beat the tar outta tampa right now if cliff were a yank
We have to find a way to keep cliff....if we don't, this is our last shot at a WS
agreed, and now comes the real litmus test: Arlington in late October vs. NY.
Cliff knows all about NY in October, but he has yet to pitch in Arlington in late October.
I actually think he might prefer Arlington. And think of how close to home he would be, a one day ride from Arkansas compared to living in NY.
I've always thought players would kind of like to live in the same general area as their home, not necessarily in their hometown.
Kind of like how ARod never did anything in Arlington, because his home was Miami. Unfortunately for him, there was no decent team near Florida that would pay him the big bucks.
interesting mixed bag of numbers. 4-6 regular season, 3-2 in playoffs.
7-8 total, ERA somewhere around 2.00-2.50?
Far and away better than the Rangers expected from their #1 at the beginning of the year, but a subpar finish for him.
Rangers should try to re-sign him, but I don't expect a ridiculous number, I would expect something in the high teens, and 5 years.
Can't afford to handcuff the team financially, I don't care about that TV deal, Lee could sputter and collapse at any moment.
But to me, the most exciting thing about Lee was his influence on the younger pitchers. C.J. especially seemed to get better the moment Cliff arrived. It kinda makes me think he would be one fantastic pitching coach, right after his pitching career.
And can you imagine the carryover of that possibility. If Cliff could influence the younger guys starting in spring training, and continue to eat innings the way he did this year,(don't even look at the win loss record), next year's team could be back in the playoffs.
I really thought that time off when his back tightened up on him was really good for his October pitching.
if Cliff wasn't here, we don't get past the first round
So, he was personally responsible for 6 additional home playoff games at premium prices + the merchandise bonanza that's going on right now in DFW....All that b/c of one man- Cliff Lee
Just on the above, he almost pays for his salary....gotta sign him Picture this team w/o him. Tommy Hunter as 3rd starter? Ready for that? Or Holland as 4th starter? That team doesn't beat the Halos next yr
Like rhyner said today, the rangers have to capitalize on this NOW. They sit on what they have w/o Lee or a bigtime pitcher on the roster, it's an opportunity gone
