The annointing has begun

Jim Rome interviews Mark Sanchez. Echos of phrases already rumbling through the weekend... "Could this be the greatest USC team of all time?...or under Pete Carroll? His best team yet?"

The question should be, "Is USC the new Notre Dame?" So that all they have to do is just get the season started and the conversation is....
1) Who can beat them before January?
2) Who will they face in January?
3) Is this the greatest __________ ?
4) Automatic high ranking until solidly proven otherwise.
5) Is this the deepest team you've ever seen at _____ and ______ and _______ and... ?

Well, guess what. Last time I checked USC in recent times has just one Glass Football in their trophy case. One. That's it.

What I'd like to see is the following:

Under Pete Carroll the total number of Top 10 ranked teams they have played. At anytime of the year, not just post-season. I am betting it is not that many. I have absolutely no numbers in front of me, but I'd wager that recent championship teams(programs) such as OU, Texas, LSU and Florida have each played more top ranked teams, in each of their seasons, than has a Pete Carroll coached team.

In other words, the USC / Pac-10 gauntlet is not that big a gauntlet. Not year in and year out.

But... whatever. Given that USC is in LA, the media capital of the world, they are in fact the Media Darlings of the sport, so all they have to do is just act good, look good and win most of their games, and the Annointing will continue.

Just one question.... If the Texas Longhorns defeated the Greatest Team of All Time, then this 2008 bunch must be off-the-charts good. Don't see how anyone can stay within 21 points of them.

When you lose only 8 games over the course of 5+ years, you're going to get hyped, whether you're USC, Notre Dame, or Southlake Carroll.

USC is a very good team this season, clearly one of the best. Very impressive win over tOSU. But they play 12 games like everyone else. Like past seasons, the pundits and experts can't wait to lavish praise on the Trojans and PC... best of all time, the team to beat, a team of destiny or something else.

However, over the last 5-6 years (with the exception of of 2004), it seems there is some team(s) that didn't get the memo or read the USC press clippings. Teams like Cal, TEXAS, Oregon State, UCLA, Oregon, or even mighty Stanford.

They are the team to beat in the PAC 10 this season, but for Pete's sake, let's let 'em play some more games before the sports media starts in with the "best of all time" mantra.

I agree that USC gets a little too much knob slobbering from the media. But at this point in the season, they have looked just as good if not better than anybody else in the country. There's no reason they shouldn't be ranked number one and the favorite to make it to the MNC game.

They play tougher teams than anyone else in the country, and they almost always win in dominating fashion

What other program in the country has beaten this many teams from outside of their conference?

Colorado
Auburn
BYU
Michigan
Virginia Tech
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Nebraska
Ohio St
Notre Dame

Every other top program has suffered a blowout loss while USC hasn't lost a game by more than a touchdown since 2001.

Oh here we go again. The revisionist discrediting of that 2005 USC team after they lost and forced most of the country to eat crow. We sure as hell didn't hear about all these chinks in their armor back then that they all of a sudden have now.

I would consider myself a pretty knowledgable fan when it comes to College Football and that team looked pretty stout against ohio State College on Saturday. They reminded me of the 2001 Hurricanes.

I hated the hype in 2005, didn't believe it very much, but this I tend to believe more than in 2005.

this usc team is the best in the nation right now. but since they know it, they're liable to **** the bed against some nobody team with a bit of spunk. wouldn't be the first time.

We won't huh?

How about this NFL team?:

- VY
- Jamaal Charles
- Selvin Young
- Limas Sweed
- Ahmard Hall
- Cedric Griffin
- Michael Griffin
- Michael Huff
- Aaron Ross
- Justin Blalock
- Rod Wright
- Tim Crowder
- Brian Robison
- David Thomas
- Kasey Studdard
- Tony Hills
- Lyle Sendlein
- Frank Okam
- Tarell Brown

- Cedric Dockery
- Roddrick Muckleroy
- Brian Orakpo
- Quan Cosby
- Roy Miller

At some point you just have to admit that a team you hate is really really good. This USC team may not win the MNC, but like the last 5 years, they are one of the best teams in the NCAA.

Just like Miami in the late 80's - early 90's, or Nebraska in the mid 90's, or Texas A&M in 1939, USC has been consistently at or near the top for an extended period of time, which is no easy feat.

And as much as you deny it, the rest of the free college football world recognizes USC's championship in 2003. I don't see how denying it makes UT any better.

I'm pretty sure that the 2008 Notre Dame Fighting Irish could beat any team from anytime or anywhere. You could put USC, Vince Young, Miami, and Nebraska together and they wouldnt have a chance. Don't you listen to Lou Holz

Let's not let it get lost here that tOSU blows. Boeckman is a chump and they were without the only guy that belongs on the field with USC in Wells. Furthermore, don't let the media hype around their "great white LBs" who can look good against slow Big 10 opponents sway you.

I think USC is tremendous, let's just not start blowing them quite yet. It was tOSU. Tressel has proven beyond a doubt he does not have his program ready to compete with the likes of the elite of the elite. Big 10 aint' **** anymore even though ESPN still shows every game.
