The Affordable Housing Debate in Austin

So you're not going to explain what you mean by innovation? I'm serious - please tell me how subsidized affordable housing creates innovation.

Just give me one example.
 
Because it forces people to design/build housing that is cheap but sustainable and enjoyable to inhabit. Is that really such a leap of logic?
 
7 Iron has a good point. Hard working families will avoid high- crime, low-income areas if they can. It's not a ******* social statement, it's doing what is best for your family. If your worldview includes living in dangerous areas of town, and putting your family at risk, more power to you. The world needs idiot ditch diggers, too.

If the market reclaims underutilized land, more power to the market. And just be thankful preace and prosperity is winding its insidious tentacles through austin rather than the riots some other idiot praised earlier. Better a bunch of Cali morons than a bystander bullet in your kid's head.
 
Remember everyone, poor areas with minorities are invariably culturally rich with strong a community base and any area inhabited primarily by professional whites is sterile boring and devoid of culture.

I for one would love gentrification to price me out of my home.
 
Remember everyone: Poor areas are infested with intellectually inferior folks who want to steal your **** and lack any semblance of a work ethic. Stay in your rich white neighborhoods, where everyone understands the value of hard work and is blessed with an above average IQ. Besides, why would you want to venture out of your rich white neighborhoods? The rest of Texas is a "********."
 
I think it's very unfortunate when gentrification drives up rents. An increase in property taxes is a little easier to stomach because homeowners are at least in possession of an appreciating asset. The problem is, you can't divorce the two.

Earlier, cbs made some very cogent points. It is in a community's best interest to distribute low income housing as opposed to focusing it in one neighborhood. In this case, "the free market" doesn't seem to be working all that well.

what does that mean? which race is the race who gets the afordable lifestyle?
Who decides? If someone is not of that race are they out of luck?
 
Its pretty sad that so many are against the idea of affordable home developments being spread across the city rather then clumping them all together and creating a "poor side of town." You're right, its not a Right, but it should be an option. After all "those" people are not all lazy morons!! Its sad when people have an "us against them" attitude. It certainly is a free market, but that shouldn't mean that well-to-do people give a big F-you to those who can't otherwise re-locate to a safer neighborhood. And do me a favor, don't chime in and give us your two cents on any post that brings light to some social injustice!
 
I can admit when I'm wrong and misunderstood what some of the posters were implying. For example;

"The people in East Austin and 5th Ward share the same intellect as most aggy. I don't want to live with or around any of them. However, if they live in an area that I like, I'll move there if I want. If my moving there improves the property value and forces low-intellect aggy or other low-intellect-low-income person out - so be it."

I don't know about the East Austin, but that statement to me sounded you don't give a **** about whether they as in "those people" have a chance to better their lives.

I stand open to correction.
 
7 Iron, I haven’t yet labeled you. I said I'm willing to be corrected. I can make mistakes and am willing to admit I'm wrong. Earlier you said the government uses citizens as tools and that it was a government v. rich issue. That's fine; I just found your comment confusing. Especially the part where you said you doesn’t care if people are forced out because you moving into a particular location would drive poor people out.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
