Horns don't look in sync right now. Gonna be a struggle to pull this one out. I think we got as many TOs in the overtime as we do shots. Still haven't scored.
Tough loss, disappointing esp since we could have won both road contests that we let get away thus far. But we're playing so much better than last year, and we're going to win some of these going forward. Overall good effort but just couldn't close it out at the end.
This was a tough game to watch. My fiancé threatened to change the channel multiple times and she kept letting me know that she was elated that I had stopped coaching because I get soo intense. But while I was glad to see halftime adjustments, I continue to be disappointed in KA's inability to make in half or crunch time adjustments. Also, how do we fail to score in the last 3 minutes of the game and not call a time out. Any coach will tell you that if you lose a game by less than 10 you should never go home with To's in your pocket. I will continue to go to games and support the team wholeheartedly, this "team that can't finish consistently" is starting to look a lot like last year. We have to want to be more than competitive. We need Chas back ASAP.
The Horns looked gassed after the first 10 mins. of the second half. Could be the OT game on Wednesday and the long trip to WV. This team usually GRABS rebounds, yet in that last half of the game, the ball was bouncing off the tips of their hands.
However, no excuses. You have to find a way to battle through fatigue and being on the road. We should have had this game.
Horns take one step forward with a win over OU, and now take two steps back with a unexcuseable loss to WVU. Horns had this game and accountability should be put on everyone on this staff. Truly embarassing... Horns stuck at 48 for minutes and end the game at 49?
Imani defensive presence is back. This brings the defense up a notch. For a team to make coffin nail plays that solidify scoring moments depends on two things; timing and confidence. timing, timing, timing, and follow thru confidence to knock down shots. Team please learn and do not hang your heads. I see cohesiveness coming.
Consistency. Why does that continue to be a trait that eludes this team? It's so frustrating. I was beginning to warm up to our new coach but now have started to sour again. This one should not have gotten away from us. Uhggg. I don't want close. I don't want great effort. I want solid wins top to bottom. Finish your plays. Make your shots. Protect the ball. 40 minutes. I remain a fan and, if truth be told, am beginning to come around about KA, but a few more like these and I'll quickly return to the sky is falling guy.
Karen Aston put it best in the post game interview: "You're not gonna win when you go a whole game and an overtime and only score 49 points." That's it in a nutshell. That's why this year will continue to be a struggle, though a more successful one than last year. Texas lacks good consistent shooting guards, simple as that. We lack hot shooting scorers. As a result, we can't score enough points to consistently beat good teams. As Gary Blair once said, "You win with guards." And as Sherry Coale observed, "Good shooting covers a multitude of sins." Texas blew it in overtime to West Virginia, yes, but it should never have gotten to overtime. It shouldn't have been close. Did we turn the ball over too much? Yes. Should Aston have called a time out sooner in overtime? Maybe. Did the guards rush too many jump shots in the fading minutes of regulation? I guess so. Did Enempali's silly turnover in the last 12 seconds cost us a chance to win the game? Probably. But really, the reason those things loom so large is because of our bad shooting. When you are scoring in the fifties and sixties, let alone the high forties, you have to play PERFECTLY to win. Every error is magnified and looms huge in the outcome. That's a lot of pressure. Defense is great, keeps things close, and wins some games for you; but you don't win at a championship level in basketball without good offense. You can't shut good teams down game after game. Sometimes you have to be able to just plain outscore them. Connecticut plays great team defense. That's not why they win so many national championships. They win because they fill the floor with some of the best dead eye shooters in the country, year after year after year. Texas had to work to beat Kansas State in Austin. I watched Baylor effortlessly beat K. State by 29 points on the road. Odyssey Sims averages 30 points a game; K State was helpless to stop her. Iowa State isn't the most athletic team, but they put four really good shooting guards on the floor, with a center who can also hit the three. Once again, this season we're last in the league in three point percentage, If we just shot the three at the league average, that alone would add at least six points a game to our scoring average. The team is actually executing the offense much better than last year; we're in far more ball games; we'll win more, too; but that's not enough, because we miss too many shots. Its a matter of personnel The new tighter enforcement of the rules will only increase the advantage that goes with speed and shooting skill, Maybe next year we'll finally get that transcendent difference-making scorer that we need so desperately.
Overseas, I pointed out that she did make some good Halftime adjustments in both this game and the OU game. I was particularly mentioning the lack of IN HALF ajdustments. You wont always have that 15 min break to get with your staff and come up with a different plan, you have to be able to make changes on the fly and I dont really see that. Theres accountability to be had all around this game. I know from experience that games like this can easily send teams into a backslide and change the momentum of a season. Chas is needed for both her big shot ability, and her leadership. We had to play Bri Taylor entirely too much in this game, and we couldve done without the freshman mistakes down the stretch.
Who would have guessed Wednesday's game would be so critical but in my worthless opinion, it is. Coming off a big road game they essentially handed to the opponent due to poor coaching (and play), it will be interesting to see how they bounce back. If they fold/lose, I worry we're looking at a repeat of 2013. If they come out and defend their home court like Aston has said repeatedly they must do, then this can still be a good season. And prove this program is improving. On a side note: Coach Aston was summoned to jury duty this morning but was excused. She obviously has work to do.
In the second half, the offense was doing a great job with Celina running the show. I'm not positive, but when she was pulled, and Krystle inserted, the offense never found its flow again.
If that was the case, not sure why Celina was pulled (fatigue or foul trouble?).
Really need to learn to run some set plays (backdoor cuts) to get cheap baskets when stuck in a rut.
I was more dissapointed in the lack of "pressure release" plays. usually involving more back door cuts, slipped screens, and dribble drives. We tried to pass too much against a team that was in the passing lanes all night. We went to a 1-4 isolation play in the second half that was very effective, but then she pulled Celina, and Brady wasnt in the game toward the end and that confused me as well. She was the only one who seemed to be hitting big shots all night
interesting points, utfann. Celina played 33 minutes but she was the only player that had more than one assist. Brady (2-2) and Gigi (1-1) were the only ones to hit 3s. Neither Celina nor Brady were in foul trouble so that was not a factor.
Horns need to beat KU to continue to protect the home court. They can't let the WVU loss cost them the KU game. They have to let it go and move forward.
OT loss to the Mountaineers in Morgantown looks a little better considering WVU just took out #11 ISU in Ames by double-digits. Doesn't feel any better though given how we played down the stretch, and how tough it is to win on the road in this league. But 2-1 in our last three starts, including the win vs. OU; I'll take it!
