86 - 45

I thought all three freshman looked pretty good for freshmen. The whole team looks to be in very good physical condition.

Ugly, Ugly.

The team was not sharp at all in this exhibition, defeating the Houston Jaguars 86-45. For reference, Baylor scored 123 against the Jags.

We had 29 turnovers and passing was terrible. Rebounding was positive and defense made some nice plays. The team generally showed good hustle to chase after loose balls. The team has lots of things to work on.

We shot 3-17 from beyond the arc, often missing the rim completely. Kat went 1-6 and Erika was 0-6. Sure hope this improves as we move forward. I had hoped 3 point shooting would be a highlight for us this year. Not so against Houston.

It was so much fun to be back in the Erwin Center, see the fans, coaches, and players. I thought the play was a bit ragged, but expected. I saw some good things. I thought the defense played very well together for the first game with various players on the court together at different times. I noticed that the Jaguars scored in the 60's and 70's in all their previous games, and Texas held them to 45. For me, that was a plus.

Texas only shot 40% and that needs to improve - but Erika missed lots of shots that she won't miss again. Earnesia missed more shots than usual too. The freshmen missed some chippie layups that they won't miss in the future. Basketball is a game of timing and they are just getting their timing down - they'll be fine.

One thing that I liked was the first time Ashley Gayle got the ball in the post, she went up strong and scored! That made me smile!!! I also liked watching Yvonne hit that little pull up jumper in the lane. She was 2-2 today - that made me smile!!! And Ashleigh's defensive stance was beautiful. She is quick and she had several layup opportunities. That made me smile!!! She didn't hit them all, but she will do better.

Ahhhhh......the season has commenced!

THAT MAKES ME SMILE!!!

P.S. Obviously, Driftwood and I differ a bit on our assessment - I choose optimism.

It's their first game and they have to develop a rythm with Erika since she was not a part of the chemistry the team developed last season. No reason to be overly optimistic or pessimistic.

YYAAHHOOOO! I finally got to see the ladies play. What did we do b4 the internet?

We have a lot of work to do but Coach will have them up and running on all cylinders by conference time. Put me on the optimistic band wagon. World Vision tourny will be a good test for them.

Don’t have time for much but I really liked what I saw. Yes, there are some rough spots (3 pt shooting, TOs, to name a couple) that need more work. But the chemistry is there. The effort on defense, the team defense, everyone running the floor, open shot opportunities, the inside scoring, there was plenty to like and to see improvement coming with time. Both Kat and Erika got very open looks-they did not convert as well as they usually do. That too will change. Ashley Gayle (AG) is going to be a force inside—she has a nice offensive game developing, too. Both Ashleigh and Yvonne are quick, good ball handlers and defenders. Carla won’t have to play 35 minutes a game nor will the team slow down when she is out for a few minutes.

Kristen and Aubry are improved—confidence seems to be a big factor here. Both made shots, played tough defense and rebounded well. Aubry still makes too many fouls but that will not be as big a factor with Kristen, AG, Lindsey, Earnie and Kat available to play inside.

Haven’t mentioned the others but they were good, too. Winning huge on the rebounding is a big change from last season when they had trouble on the boards. Last I looked, they were at around 75% on FTs. Pretty good, and one can expect that to improve. Both Ashleys blocked shots. AG showed a tendency to block the shot and kinda of snatch it out of the air right afterwards. Nice touch.

Can’t wait to see how they look this coming weekend. I will have to miss the Monday game which may be the best game of the three but work calls.

I’m with Rexy. This team showed a lot of reason for fans to be optimistic about the season.

Quick reference to the roster size by Coach G. She told everyone after the game that she likes a small roster—11 or 12. Guess it will take an exceptional player to get her to break that. Good thing is that it leaves a ship or two open for that type of player.

Re Kelsey Bone and her wanting to play some outside, she watches this team, she will notice that our post players get chances to display their ballhandling and outside shots. They are not anchored inside. I don’t know who will sign with Texas besides Reed and Flores, but I am anxiously waiting to find out.

Baylor also allowed 70. The margin was 53 pts, The Horns won by 41. Don't really see much difference, especially with different rosters.

I didn't get to see the game but the descriptions posted sound eerily similar to the ones from last year...poor shooting and not taking care of the ball.

This team is now loaded with experience, and with experience comes knowing the value of the rock. Regardless of the opponent, 29 turnovers is way too many, especially against a team like this. This indicates poor passing more than savvy defense by the opponent.

Yes, there was a lot of poor passing, no doubt about that. But I think (IMHO) it was due to having a continual combination of different players on the court. There was never consistently the same players together. We threw lots of downcourt passes - and those take timing and knowing how fast the receiver (sounds like football

) is going to run and exactly the route they will take. Some of these passes were intercepted (

too much football).

I'm really not trying to make excuses for them - but to me (again IMHO) they looked MILES ahead of where they were at this time last season. Thus, I am optimistic about what I saw - turnovers not withstanding. I think turnovers can be corrected. Yes, the shooting was also poor and I didn't want to see that. We may suffer that fate this season too - I hope not, but we may. I do know though, that lots of shots were missed last night, that I don't think will be missed in the future. I could be wrong of course, but I choose to be optimistic about this team. I think they'll do well.

The difference between 53 and 41 is 12 It's simple math. The team played sloppy basketball plain and simple. The true believers may call me negative, but performance says the team failed to execute. Hope they improve big time before Dayton!!

I'm not sure that getting all upset about the comparison between apples and orages is a good way to encourage players looking to sign in the next few days that TEXAS fans are the best! That being said, I really do believe we have come a long way ujnder Coach G and still have lots of room for improvement this season. I'm really excited about this team.
