Gulf Coast Showcase championship game... WVU is definitely a worthy opponent. They're a well-coached team and they've got a few who can both get downhill and shoot it from downtown. There's a big body in the middle, she's a freshman but she takes up space and plays pretty physical. Their full court pressure falls back into an extended 3-2 or 2-1-2, and they're very good at trapping out of it. We're going to have to play very well.

Yep, this game's for real. Time to put together the best team to win.

And, trust me, they want us bad after that spanking we gave them in Morgantown last time we faced them. I'm hoping our players remember JJ Quinerly's remarks at the Big 12 media day last season... "I'm just glad we get to play Texas one more season." That comment didn't age well for her and I hope we keep it that way.

I don't understand Taylor's style of play so far. She's constantly in foul trouble and taking herself out of the game. Oldacre is not faring any better.

Wow, Arigbabu is killing Texas. Only averages 4 mins a game and less than a point a game. Guess who has hit all of her field goals in the first half? = 8 pts.

Book gotta get on the good foot and not just spurts of greatness and Kyla and TJ need to come on make the adjustment stop with the ticky tac fouls. But overall glad AMo showed up and yal ain’t gonna like me for my next staement but Phelia should be starting well be better for it because Holle is the better fix it type player I feel like Holle can still play a lot of mins but just have her come in off bench and as a team quit shooting the 3 unless we have to cause we not good at chunking em we shoot the 3 better in system or on a kick out

Boy, 4 pt game now. Texas has just gone stone cold on shooting, keeps letting Quinerly score at the buzzer, and is barely hanging on.

Glad to get the win. Vic Schaefer's technical foul with like 1:30 or so left really turned the tide in WVU's favor as Texas just kept making bad decision after bad decision down the stretch.

We still managed to win over a good team. Sure, we need to get better, but this was a good introduction for the new players to what much of the rest of the season will be like.

Good, hard-fought win. Officials were horrendous both ways... whistle fest. I think we figured out what our nine or ten player rotation will be, but we better figure out what combination can keep three quick perimeter players in front of them, because that starting combination is not it.

Jordan Lee did a good job keeping them in front of her, as did Preston. Phelia did pretty good also. I'd like to see Preston and Rori in the game together some more. Going into the SEC, this won't be the last team we'll see with three quick guards like that.

Oh yeah, good game Amo! 🤘

Preston played 6 minutes. Lee played 6 minutes. Phelia played 23 minutes. So, that means Rori and Shay didn't play good defense in their 51 combined minutes? I didn't get to listen to the game until 2 minutes remaining.

I am very worried about our back court play (not counting Booker at SF). WVU's guards scored 29 and 20 points tonight despite hitting only one 3-pointer between them. Rori scored 10 points and Shay disappeared again and could only muster 1 free throw. Phelia scored 2 points, and Lee and Preston went scoreless.

If we can't contain WVU's guards, I fear that Notre Dame's guards will eat us alive on Thursday. Rori has to be able to do better than 3-10 from the field.

A travel call with .4 seconds left in the game pretty much summed up the vibe of the whole night. As someone else said - a whistle fest. That technical against Vic almost cost us the game and with 90 seconds left he should have kept his cool having been warned already.

That was a quality win against a quality team, but Vic needs to come up with a better plan for such a deep bench. We should have gassed WV rather than letting them beat us at our own game with that press. Preston should have seen the floor sooner to give Rori a breather and Oldacre could barely get her free throw to the rim in the final minutes while Jones sat on the bench with an equal number of fouls.

Headscratcher - Holle’s points (or lack there of) and no Jak in the final game

Really good news - a different person stepped up each night to have a breakout game - Booker, Carlton and then Moore. Other teams will have a hard time scouting us because even if those three have a simultaneous off night - Oldacre, Jones, Harmon, Phelia all could step up as well. Pick your poison with this squad.

As I stated, Rori was 3-10 from the field. Our other guards:
Shay was 0-2
Laila was 0-1
Jordan was 0-1
Bryanna was 0-1

None of them had a single assist. How does Laila only get 1 shot in 23 minutes? What kind of offense are we running? Just feed the interior players and Booker's mid-range game?

We started out with Rori on JJQ, and I believe she was 2 for 8 from the field and halftime. The problem was Harrison, their primary ball handler, who Vic put Shae on. She got to the rim at will for layups. Again, not going to knock Shae, but she cannot keep quick guards in front of her and it was a glaring liability, and WVU entered the game with that knowledge... attacking her was an obvious part of their game plan. Having watched WVU, I figured we were going to start with Rori on Harrison but that's not how it went.

Eventually, Vic tweaked that a bit and had Rori on her more later on in the game. Rori defended her much better. Lee, Preston, and Phelia had much less trouble defending their guards. Harrison got lots of layups, and JJQ got lots of free throws. Booker did a good job holding their third outstanding perimeter player Shaw, who is a transfer from Auburn, in check.

It was an ugly, choppy game... few possessions both ways without whistles.

I thought it was the opposite as far as fouls being called a lot. Thought I heard the radio folks say that.

Regardless, our guards got to the free throw line 4 times combined. Seems like our frontcourt players and Madi had much more luck getting to the line.

Ugly, choppy meaning that because of the officiating and constant whistles, the game never got into a good flow or rhythm.

One last comment... It's good to have some things exposed against a very good team and still come out with a win. WVU is a serious contender for the Big 12 championship.

I agree.

I guess I'm just disappointed that Vic has talked a lot about how happy he is that he has such better guard depth/play than last season, and they got owned last night. I've always agreed with him that "you win with guards"; so, that performance offensively and defensively worries me.

I am in no way expecting Rori by herself to match Hannah Hidalgo's scoring come Thursday; that means our other guards have to score when they come into the game. They weren't even taking shots last night.

The first order of business needs to be starting the game with the right combination of guards that can defend dribble penetration. We got eaten alive with that last night, giving WVU one layup after another. If anyone who didn't watch the game wonders why they shot such a high percentage... there you have it.

IMO Phelia needs to be inserted into the starting lineup ASAP for a few reasons. She may not be a lockdown defender, but she's quicker and better at staying in front of a penetrating guard. She also has a very impressive offensive arsenal... we need that... and she needs to be able to start the game and find her comfort zone within the chemistry of the team.

Also, it's not a good look for future portal recruiting when you bring in an all Big Ten first teamer and they don't start. I understand that she's been dealing with injuries, but she's healthy now and we need to utilize her skills.

Yep, Phelia looks like Matharu.2 so far. Matharu only started in 11 games and her scoring statistics fell off. So far, bringing in big scorers (adding Shaylee Gonzales to the mix), hasn't worked out in Vic's plan.

I think Phelia's situation will work out differently than Matharu's... but we'll see.

Phelia will be just fine. She is just getting back in the groove and finding her role on this team post injury. She is averaging 9 or 10 pts a game just coming off the bench. I think by mid-season, she will replace Shay on the wing as the starter.

I'm very disappointed in our 3 PT shooting so far this season. Almost no one can hit the broadside of a barn with the exception of Maddie.

By the way, can I just say that the FloHoops channel sucks! Bad video with color shifting and pixelation, the sound cutting in and out, and the LHN-like commentary in the play by play (yes, Lowell Galindo, I'm talking about you). Worst $29 I have ever spent.
