Texas vs USC 12/18/2022

So, happy for the win. Not so happy about how it evolved. It looked tonight like an average team beat a below average team. The game was sparsely attended, which was disappointing. Going to be a challenge to increase Women's Basketball attendance.

May not have been pretty (and how often are they really in Vic’s system), but they beat a team that #10 UCLA just squeaked past by 3. They held them 24 points below their season average, forced 29 turnovers and held them to 18% behind the arc. I was afraid Destiny Littleton was going to go off on Texas on 3 pointers but that didn’t come to pass thank goodness. AND, nobody got injured.

I wasn't worried about Littleton because I figured her lack of quickness would struggle with our defense. In fact, we did a good job of identifying and exploiting the matchup with Littleton guarding Shalee.

I must have watched a different game because I thought we played well and had a solid win giving USC their second (and worst) loss this season. Their other loss being a 3-pt squeaker to #10 UCLA a few days ago. Vic seemed happy too.

BTW - Rori played that game sick with a cold/bug.

I had plans so I couldn’t attend the MBB game but was very disappointed to see a mass of burnt orange heading to their cars as I walked to the arena. You bought the tickets to both games - just had to run home and see the Cowboys get jacked by Jacksonville rather than support UT women?

So happy to say, I was so wrong about Shaylee, That girl is a hard worker and a quick learner. I am enjoying watching her play,
Shaylee has been playing JAT-type minutes. Vic's pretty much leaving her in the whole game now. Her ball handling has gotten much better. She has worked hard to fit into Vic's system without complaints. Her offense seems like it keeps us in games and she is one of the best FT shooters I've seen.

Exactly. So frustrating...

I'm afraid you're probably right. I told a friend the other day that we may as well get used to playing without her most of the time.
Yep, when Vic said "stress reaction" and Jones was icing her back, I knew it wasn't good. In the games she'll be able to play in (hopefully) Texas will be really good. All the other times, Texas will have to be gritty like they were yesterday.

I have not really followed Littleton’s career especially after she left Texas. Has she ever played the point guard position?

At this point with all of our injuries I will take a win anyway we can get it. There are some things we are doing to ourselves that needs to be cleaned up but this seems like who we will be rolling with for quite some time and I still believe we have what it takes to win the big 12 we just need to gel more as a team which will come as time goes on. Our defense looks like it‘a improving but our offense seems to be a problem right now.

She's a big girl with a bad back. It doesn't take "serious" injury to a back to limit one's effectiveness in movement, etc. Just ask any older person (like me).
Or ask a middle-aged tall person, former post-up pllayer like me... those lower back issues tend to hang around intermittently forever. They can be dealt with, but you never know when they're going to pop up. There are a lot of preventive measures involved in attempting to hold them off.

Yes, we are going through growing pains, and it’s difficult with a changing lineup due to injuries, but the team is developing and the captain of the ship is a proven quantity. What I failed to fully understand on Sunday was that USC has the sixth ranked scoring defense in the nation. They typically hold opponents to 50.2 points and we scored 62 on them. Our offense was going to look ugly against a good defense like theirs, but we still found a way to win. We don’t face another defense like that until Feb 1rst at WV. Only WV 8th, Kansas 19th and Baylor 26th for the B12 in the top 50. (We are 59th)

(Our game for the championship against South Carolina will probably be ugly as well, they are holding opponents to 44pts /game so we should anticipate that.) :e-face-shades:

USC plays some solid defense for sure, but attribute most of that "points allowed" average of 50.2 ppg to their non-conference schedule.

Yep, worse than Tceh's. They lost to the only 2 team's they've played with a pulse.
