Texas vs Stanford

Great post txex86!

Cokie looked good. She just needs to work on passing out on the double team.

I thought Hartung played much better in the 2nd half then the first half. Much more aggressive. We need her to be that way the whole game. I was impressed with Enemkpali. For her first game & going against C Ogwumike I thought she did a good job.

I was thinking while watching the game last night that we looked gassed. I didn't realize that it was a concern going into the game. I thought that one of the coaching changes we made was suppose to address fitness/strength or am I not remembering that correctly? Either way, I totally agree that with the exception of the people who are out injured there is no excuse for this.

Just watched the game over again on the LHN.

Even better, got two changes to watch it again Sunday. Really not as bad as I had thought. But I sure hope that Cassie is okay. Her right knee buckled when she tried to make a cut. And I hope we start getting some of those players that didn’t play Friday back soon. If Cassie is out and the team doesn’t get anyone back, then they are down to seven players.

Of course, I was disappointed the team didn’t win as I thought they had an excellent shot at it. But Ashley getting two quick fouls in the first and her third so early in the second really limited her time and we needed her defensive presence. The 3 pt shooting was horrendous. With the shooters the team has, that should get a lot better. They did force some passes inside but not as many as I had thought and some of those “poor” passes were actually deflected by Stanford.

The good: Cokie is going to be tough inside. Nneka is fearless and very active. She’s going to be very good. Loved watching Anne Marie playing. She will be a key contributor in the post. Ashley will continue to be a strong defensive stopper. Chas is Chas, solid shooter and nails from the FT line. Cassie is going to be an outstanding PG. Yvonne and Ashleigh give us two guards that can defend, drive and finish. They really didn’t hit from BTA but basically no one for Texas did, other than the one Chas made.

They will need to improve on boxing out, that really hurt the team as much as not hitting the 3pter. Kinda surprised to see that both teams had 10 steals and 15 TOs each. They got 20 offensive rebounds to Texas’ 16 but had a 16-10 edge in second chance pts. Another edge: Stanford made 28-66 FGs to the Horns 20-59. Included were 4-12 3s for the Tree while Horns only connected on 1-11. 3s were fairly open, but just didn’t fall.

I expect the Horns to bounce back and win the next two. They will have three games after those in Hawaii before facing Tennessee in Knoxville. That game should tell us a lot about how much they have improved since this game.

As for Stanford, man, have they got post players galore. Got so many they play them on the wing. And Amber Orrange is going to be something special. Once she learns to use her right hand and to vary her speed, she will so much difficult to control.

I, too, have watched some of the re-runs of the game...got a chance to hear Rebecca Lobo, who I usually like, but I found her kissing up Stanford for the whole game a bit much..like when she didn't know the meaning of a word Monaco was using she commented "I'll ask someone from Stanford"...really?

You could have asked ME, I knew the word, and I was educated at TEXAS!! Guess that doesn't say much for UConn's Education, huh, Rebecca? The next time you call a game here, how about giving us some respect?

Alright my 2 cents...

Gayle still can't make cheapies around the basket. Sit her on the bench. I know this is harsh but REALLY! SMH!

Welcome back Cokie. I'm glad to see you and an inside presence who can SCORE. Coaches develop multiple plays especially for Nneka or Chassidy to slice to the basket once Cokie is double teamed. Having her doubled will clear out a whole side for Nneka/Chassidy or whomever to slice to the basket. 2 points ALL NIGHT LONG BABY!! I said Nneka or Chassidy because they seem to be the fearless two who came to paly and WIN! O Coaches none of this kick it out for a three. A slicing player for a cheap 2 is far better than taking our chances on a 3.

Freshmen OK get the first couple of game chitters, I have on a Longhorn jersey out of the way. LET'S PLAY BALL!!

We're still missing that person who has that killer instinct, take no prisoner and has a nose for the ball swagger.

Gassed at the end of this game. What's that about? Isn't preseason supposed to get you conditioned? Like someone else said SUICIDES until the puke up a lung. I know the bench is short, yada, yada, yada. BUT NO EXCUSES.

I'm still TICKED about the LHN. I'm going to miss a lot of games. DUMB DUMB DUMB LHN!

I see hope in this team. But Hope is not good enough. I want to see FIRE!!!!

I'm cool w/ taking a few knocks during preseason to work out the kinks. Not a problem as long as I see results in conference play and at least to the 3rd round in NCAA. I think we will lose more games at the beginning of the season but will have a stronger presence at the end of the season and a good run and maybe Big 12 tourny championship at the end. I say this because I think our freshmen get it! And by the end of the season the freshmen, Brewer and Cokie will take over. I have no rhyme or reason or stats but it's something about this freshman class that I like!!

And Ronisha come on baby we need you to get it together so you can play!! Squash the silly stupid stuff put your game face on and lets play ball!!

Cynt, that is a great post. Love to see other's who critique actually have idea's for a solution. The only thing I would say is that while the premise of your "slicing to the basket" idea is a good theory, thats the first thing that would be guarded by helpside Defense. So more often than not, the only thing that will be open is the weakside 3. But I do see some occasional cuts to the basket helping to ease the pressure.

I also was at the game and caught it again on LHN. I see a lot of good, especially on the inside. We just need to work on blocking out.
C.Reed - she look good, to have set out a year. She need to get in shape. But I see a great season ahead for C.Reed.

A.Hartung - was great! This young lady deserve to start.Great outside shot. And she fights for rebounds!

A.Gayle - all I can say is Ashely Gayle - Ashley Gayle She did not come to play at all.I was very disappointed in her game. And she has earned a spot coming off of the bench.

Nneka - I see a lot of good in her. She need time to come along.I predict she will be a All-America before she leave Texas.

Chassidy - was Chassidy, just great! I like how she have lost weight. She will be the scoring leader this year.

Y.Anderson - once again, we have another player that have lost weight and look good playing.I was very impress with her game. Because she attacks the basket.

C.Peoples - looks like to me, we really have a new general! She would be starting at the point. And move Anderson to the 2. She was dribbling the ball with her head up. And she can get the ball to C.Reed.

AT - is the same ol AT. I am very disappointed in her game. She is a Senior. And played better when she was a FR and Soph.Plus shes gained weight, and is much slower.

But this is just the 1st game. So I do hope the Seniors do lead the team by example. That mean perform, do your part. Y.Anderson was Outstanding. Lets step it up tonite.I expect great things this year. We have all the pieces. But its also about you bringing your game nite in and nite out.
FIGHT!
Remove the Motto: No Excuses!

I don't think it affected either team more than the other (if anything it benefitted us more in the 1st half), but those refs were really inconsistent. In the first half they were bailing out offensive players everytime they moved into a defensive player even slightly, and the more the 2nd half went on the more stuff they started letting go with a no-call. The phantom block they called us early in the 2nd was annoying, but mostly the problem was just inconsistency all-around. I don't like they way they called the 1st half, but if they call the entire game that way, the players at least know what they can and can't do.

We missed too many barely-contested shots and our boxing out mostly consisted of turning to stare at the rim. Our defenders never figured out how to adjust to Stanford's posts. Guards not named Chassidy need to be more aggressive with the ball.

On the good side, I like what I see from Cokie. The low post seems to be a black hole for the ball, but she's got a few smooth moves that were slightly Duncan-esque in their simplicity and effectiveness. The high-low we were running has potential, but I'm not sure if our posts are going to shoot a high enough % from the elbow to make it worth it if defenses start adjusting. Our defense did a pretty good job of forcing turnovers without taking too many risks to do so, which was good to see.

One other thing I forgot to mention. Me and the person I was attending the game with both noticed this at about the same time. Our on-ball screens are usually quite ineffective because our screeners quite literally never roll.
