Texas vs. Rice Game 1

It may be Friday the 13, but it's a lucky day for all baseball fans. It's the start of the college and Texas baseball season.

The CWS seems long ago now and it's time for the Horns to start working their way back to Omaha.

They could get off to a great start by taking the first series of the year against a ranked Rice team on the road in Houston.

First, I am sorry to say that the new Hornfans site is not yet up. I was hoping to start out the season by being able to do even more on game threads with it. It will be us soon and I look forward to that. So till then it's business as usual with a recap of each half inning. It's the only way go with the current site.

I'm also very sorry to say that free live game streams are almost impossible to get anymore. New laws and regulations around the world have almost made them impossible as they have driven out all the main sites that did them. Justintv and my old go to site I discovered long ago and others a couple of years later found it also in Wiziwig are victims of these new laws and have shut down.

There is a pay per view stream which will get you a month of many games for $9.95 including the four game series between Texas and Rice.

The Link

I think you will find this is the only option for any coverage other than if you live close enough to pick up 1300 am in Austin for Craig Way's play by play. Texassportsl.com is covering the softball game even though it's on LHN for some reason.

You can try the gametracker on D1baseball if you don't want to buy cbscollegesportlive.com coverage. I think it's worth the $9.95.

Going to go try to dig up the starting linups now. Be back with the game soon!

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Ben Johnson step into the righty batter's box to face McCanna the Rice righty on the Hill.

Kevin McCanna is from the Woodlands, Texas.
Johnson opens the season with a swinging K for one down.

Collin Shaw plays in right tonight and bats lefty with one away.
Shaw lines one into the alley in left center and with his speed it's an easy double for Texas's first knock of the season.

C.J. Hinojosa in his usual position at short steps in righty with one away and a runner in scoring position.
A fly ball to right is two away as Shaw tags and moves to third.

So Marlow steps in lefty trying to give Texas the early lead.
Marlow starts at second base and bats clean up he grounds to second and that's the inning

Texas threatens, but doesn't score. French comes out for the Horns and Rice bats for the first time in the new season.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Ryan Chandler leads off for Rice against Parker French the Texas staff ace unless he moves to closer later this season.

Chandler in center steps in lefty against French
An inside fast ball nips Chandler and he reaches first.

Ford Stainback plays short, and bats lefty with one on and no outs.
Chandler at first has good speed and there he goes and Barrera's throw is just late and he makes second.

Stainback now has a runner in scoring position and the count runs full and French starts slowly as he often does.
A ground ball goes through left field and that puts runners on first and third with nobody gone.

Leon Byrd, the shortstop bats lefty sends a deep fly ball to left that Johnson pulls in on the track, but its a SF.

Rice leads 1-0.

One away and one on for John Clay Reeves the DH , the first righty bats.
The count again runs full as French is throwing too many pitches, even more so for the first game of the year.
A slow ground bal is cut off by Boswell at third and the 5-3 is out two as Stainback takes third.

Connor Teykl bats lefty and plays first with two down.
He grounds sharply to short and Hinojosa guns him out 6-3 to retire the side.

Rice strikes first and after an inning leads 1-0.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Tres Barrera leads off for Texas in the 2nd. He bats righty and K's swinging on three pitches for one away.

Bret Boswell at third gets his first bat as a Horn with one away.
He grounds to first and the 3-1 toss to McCanna covering is two away.

Zane Gurwitch, the DH grounds to short and the Horns go in quick order.

Bottom of two and Rice with a 1-0 lead.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Trystan Gray plays third and bats lefty leads off for the Owls in the bottom of the second.
Another full count and then a ground ball gets through on the right side for a single.

Rice with another lead runner for Charlie Warren the right fielder.
He can't get the bunt down and then a slider under the hands in the zone is taken for a backwards K and one away.

Hunter Koycinski the Rice catcher bats righty with one on and one away.
He grounds to short and it's 6-4-3 for the first twin killing of the season for Texas to retire Rice.

Two played in full and Rice leads still 1-0.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

McCanna is out for his third inning on the hill.

Taylor Stell, in center and it's good to see him back from injury in last season.
He K's swinging for one away and so far the new baseball is doing the Horns any good without some contact.

Jones, at first bats with one down and also K's swinging and the Horns aren't giving the new ball much chance with no contact.

Johnson is back up at the top of the order with two down and the count runs full before he also K's swinging to retire the side again in order.

Bottom of the third and Rice leads 1-0.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

French is on for his third inning and faces John Willliamson batting lefty as many Owls do.
The Rice left fielder grounds hard up the middle and Marlow gets a glove on it and rolls toward Hinojosa, it's an infield single.

So again Rice gets it's lead man on base.

The lead off man Chandler bats with one on.
He sends a hard liner to Hinojosa who spears it and his strong throw back to first nips the runner on a very close play for a 6U-3 double play.

Two away for Stainback and he grounds to second for a 4-3 put out to retire the Rice side.

Three complete and Rice ahead 1-0.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

McCanna pitching a good game so far is back in the fourth to face the Horn right fielder Shaw.

He has the only Texas hit, a double in the first.
This time he goes fishing for a pitch in the dirt and becomes the sixth K victim of McCana.

Hinojosa bats with one down and ends the K string by flying out once again to right for two away.

Ten straight Horns have been retired now.

Marlow bats with two away and nobody on.
He drive a one hopper off the wall in the corner in right for a double.

Barrera bats and tries to even the game at least for Texas.
The Horns have a good hitting percentage when they make some contact.
The count runs full and Tres lines one to left center and Chandler the center fielder makes a diving catch to keep Rice in the lead and retire the side.

To the bottom of the 4th and Rice still ahead 1-0.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

French still on the hill for Texas faces Byrd, who has driven in the only run of the game on a SF leads off for Rice.

He bunts down the third base line, but Barrera jumps on the ball and a laser to first is a 2-3 out for one away.

Reeves is up now and is hit by a pitch and reaches as Rice keeps getting runners on.

A 2-0 count to Teykl brings the first visit of the year by Skip Johnson. A few words and he is back in the dugout.
Skip got his message across as he usually does and a shallow fly ball to left is two away.

Gray bats with two down and one on.
A line drive ticketed for left and a single is pulled out of the air on leap by Marlow at second to retire the side.

Four played at Reckling and the score is stuck at 1-0 Rice.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

McCanna toils on for Rice in the Texas fifth.

Boswell leads off for the Horns and runs the count full.
A ground ball to second is misplayed by the second baseman and goes into center for an the first error of the season.

One on for Gurwitz and no outs and could anything but a bunt be expected here.
McCanna takes the bunt away by walking Gurwitz and that puts two on and nobody down.

Stell bats and he squares and another ball brings a conference on the mount for Rice.
Stell can't get the bunt down and the count runs full again and here comes a big pitch in the early season.
He walks on a pitch just outside to load the bases and nobody down.

Wayne Graham comes strolling to the mound and has a word for the home plate ump who says the pitch was ouside. He goes back to the dugout and McCanna stays in.

The freshman Travis Jones needs some contact here.
He gets none and a big K for McCanna is out one.

Johnson, the lead off man bats with the sacks full and one down.
This is a big at bat to say the least.
The count runs full again and another big pitch here.
A chopper to the hole at short is beaten out by Johnson with his speed.

That ties the game 1-1.

Shaw bats with one down and the bases full.
Really need to take the lead here.
Shaw takes a called strike three and you just can't do that in that situation for two away.

Up to HInojosa now to give the Horns the lead with the bases loaded with two away.
A one hopper to third makes C.J. 0-3 and retires the side.

Texas ties the game without a clean hit, but halfway through the game we are tied 1-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

French out for what could well be his last inning tonight.

Warren leads off for Rice and a inside out swing sends a grounder by Boswell and down the line in left for a lead double and Rice has the lead runner on yet again.

Kopycinski up lays the bunt down, but French quickly off the mound makes the play 1-3 and holds the runner at second.

One down for the nine hole hitter in Williamson.
A ground ball by Jones goes to Marlow and his throw to French covering is the rare 4-1 out for two away as Warren goes to third.

Chandler, the lead off hitter bats with two away and the lead run at third.
He has good wheels and the infield is in some.
A high foul pop on the right side is misjudged by Jones and he can't make the play for an error.
The next pitch hits Chandler and he reaches for the second time by HBP.

Runners on the corners with two down for Stainback.
A hard liner up the middle grazes French and goes right to Hinojosa who gloves and makes the play unassisted at second on the force to retire the side.

The freshman Jones breaths a sigh of relief that his error didn't cost the Horns the tie.

Five played and tied at 1-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

The game goes to the bullpen for Rice as Plano right hander Ryan McCarthy comes to the mound.

Marlow leads off and grounds out to short for one down.

Barrera up next lines a single to left center for his first hit of the year.

One on and one down for Boswell.
Another hard ground ball to second and a potential doubl play ball eats him up and carreens toward right field.
The error again against Boswell puts runners on the corners with one away.

Gurwitz swings and sends a ground ball to third on one hop. The play goes 6-3 as Barrera has to hold at third.and Boswell goes to second.

Two in scoring position with two down for Stell, who looks for a big clutch job to give Texas the lead.
A sharp grounder to third and the play goes 5-3 to retire the side.

The ball may be new but the score still looks like last year.

Bottom of the sixth tied 1-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Neither starter will get a decision tonight as Travis Duke the lefty comes into the game for Texas

He faces Byrd, who has the only run driven in for Rice.
The switch hitter turns around and bats righty against Duke.
The count runs full on a close pitch and then a single to left again puts a lead runner on for Rice.

Reeves bats right with one on and nobody down and a bunt is in order here.
Instead he lines a single over Marow and that puts two on at first and second with no outs.

Teykl bats with and will he bunt them over?
He does bunt and pops it back to Duke who sqeezes it for one away as the runners hold.

Kirby Taylor pinch hits for Rice from the right side an pops one up foul on the right side and this time Jones makes the play, not easily, but he made it for two down.

Another pinch hitter for Rice is righty Dane Myers and a little quibber to Duke's left is snagged on a slide and the 1-3 play retires the side.

A threat for Rice just like Texas had and neither scores. The result is after six played the score stays tied 1-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Taylor stays in the game and plays left for Rice.

McCarthy comes back out to pitch in the seventh.

Travis Jones, with the adventures in foul pop ups leads off for Texas.
A 2-2 pitch comes way inside and hits Jones and Texas get the lead run on with no outs.

Johnson up and bunts and the pitcher fields and throws wild and off the glove of the second baseman and into right center.

The error results in runners at second and third with no outs.

Graham to the mound and pitching change is made.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Left hander Austin Solecitto, comes in for Rice.

He faces lefty hitting Shaw with two on at second and third and no outs.

The infield is playing back up the middle and a ground ball could give the Horns the lead.

Shaw runs the count full and need contact at least here again.
A half swing by Shaw is a Texas Leaguer that lands just fair down the right field line.

Two runs score on the double, but Shaw is caught between second and third for a 9-5-4 out.

Texas takes the lead 3-1. What would a game be without a base running blunder.

Hinojosa flies to left for two away.

Marlow grounds out to second to retire the side.

Stretch time in Houston and Texas takes it's first lead of the season 3-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Duke faces Kopycinski to lead off the senventh for Rice.

He singles up the middle to put another lead man on for Rice.

Another Rice pinch hitter is Lewis Grayson, and he singles to right to put the tying runs on with no outs.

Chandler, the lead off hitter is up and the bunt is in order.
He tries to bunt at a pitch a foot outside and is down 1-2 in the count.
He still bunts and Duke fields and goes to second for a 1-6 out for one away.

Runners on the corners with one away for Stainback.
Chandler is a threat to go at first to get the tying run in scoring position.

Stainback swings and misses at a good change and that's two down.

Byrd up again with the tying runs on and two down.
Chandler is an even bigger threat to go now.
The first pitch grazes Byrd on the elbow and yet another HBP loads the bases.

Reeves bats righty with the bases loaded and yet another big moment in the game comes.
He pops it up and Marlow comes over by the right field line as he calls off the shaky Jones and makes the catch to retire the side.

Texas has dodged Rice bullets all night and that was some big dodging there.

Texas leads 3-1 through seven.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Myers goes to right field and Lewis to third for Rice.

Solecitto back out in the Texas eighth to face Barrera leading off.

Tres pops out to short for one away.

Boswell up with one away as he looks for his first hit as a Horn.
The count runs full before a pitch outside is ball four. Rice wanted the call, but it was outside. It's a tight zone both ways tonight.

Gurwitz bats with one down and one on from the right side.
Yet another full count, Boswell could go here.
Another walk on a pitch in the dirt puts two on.

Stell up with two on and one down and insurance runs would be very welcome.

Pitching coach comes out, but no change is made.

Stell steps back in from the right side and he K's swinging.
It's a new season, but just like last year the Horns strike out way too much.

Jones up in the nine hole with two on and two down.
He also K's swinging and Texas has double digits K's.
That retires the side.

Both teams stranding a ton of runners, but Texas leads 3-1 to the bottom of eight.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Connor Mayes on for Texas in the eighth.

Big spot for the freshman and Teykl leads off.
He sends a liner toward the line and Johnson comes up throwing and he guns him out at second for a big first out.

What a dumb base running play for Rice this time. You can't do that down two runs.

Taylor up with one down and he lines a single to left.

Myers up with one on and one down and out comes Skip.
He leaves Mayes in.
A ground ball that Boswell cuts off and flips to second, but not in time.

The infield single puts the tying runs on again with one down.

Kopycinski bats with two on and one down as the pressure stays on in every inning.
A ground ball up the middle and Hinojosa takes it to the bag and fires to first for another 6U-3 double play.

Texas is now dodging machine gun bullets and leads after eight innings 3-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Another pitcher comes on for Rice in the ninth.

Glen Otto, a big right hander faces the top of Horn order in Johnson.

Ben is 1-4 for the night and he K's on a high fast ball and the K beat goes on for Texas.

Shaw bats with one down and also K's swinging. That must be 12 or 13 K's for Texas.

Hinojosa bats with two down he also K's swinging as Otto strikes out the side.

Still Texas comes out in the ninth looking to take the first game of the year and the series leading 3-1.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Ty Culbreth comes in and the lefty tries to close out the game and get the save.

He faces righty hitting Lewis Grayson leading off for Rice.
A fly to right is out one and finally Rice doesn't get a lead man on.

Chandler, the lead off man bats lefty with one down.
A big curve ball and Chandler leaves the bat on his shoulder for a called backwards K for a big second out.

Stainback suddenly becomes the last hope for the Owls.
The count runs full and a fly ball to right to Shaw ends the game.

Texas wins the season opener 3-1. Let's take a second and come back and sum things up.

Re: Texas vs. Rice Game 1

Duke gets the win for Texas and McCarthy the loss for Rice.

It's a big win for the Horns against a ranked team on the road. That is the very good news.

The bad news is that the Texas offense is still not there yet.
They struck out way to often and left runners on time and time again.

Rice didn't strike out as much, but they left on a ton of runners too and made a huge base running mistake in the eigthth on the lead off hit that they tried to stretch into a double when two runs down.

Basically the game was lost by Rice on errors. The new ball unless it causes booted ground balls and errant throws didn't come into play.

Texas turned three double plays and that was a big difference. Rice hit more balls hard than Texas, but Texas made the defensive plays when they needed them.

So a game won on good pitching and big defensive plays.
Where have I heard that one before? I believe if Texas played with square balls they would still win the same way.

But any way you cut it, it's still a big win for the Horns and I will take three more the same way if that is how we need to do it.

Really can't say it enough, but your work is amazing and very much appreciated for those of us unable to watch / listen / attend the games. I came here specifically for your write-up and it was absolutely perfect. My favourite parts are where I see a half inning for Texas and the paragraph is extra long and then Rice's is way short and I have a good feeling about what I'm about to read. Looking forward to the next three threads having the same ending this weekend.

From Taiwan with great appreciation,

Nice start to the new season!
Good game between two good teams.
I listened on radio, and Craig Way and Bill Little had a surprise guest on the air-Coach Gus dropped in for a couple of innings.
His grandson is an assistant coach at Rice now. Sure was nice to hear him on the air. Gus said he was on his way to attend the Alumni Game when it got rained out. Maybe he will show up at the Disch a little bit this year (?).
