Horns lead this series 25-23 although Horns have lost the last two regular season games, including 70-59 loss in Norman earlier in Jan. Horns did win in last season’s Big 12 tournament between those two losses. OU comes into this game half a game out of first place with a record of 7-0 in conference play. Baylor is 8-0. Texas is in fifth at 3-4 after losing two in a row. Horns will try to hand OU their first loss while breaking that two game losing streak. A win Thursday would give Coach Aston her 150th win.
The top scoring team in league play has three players averaging double figures: Gioya Carter (# 25, 5-9 Soph. G) at 18.0 ppg, Kaylon Williams (# 42, 6-2 RS Jr. F) averaging 12.9 ppg and Peyton Little (# 10, 5-11 RS Soph. G) at 10.9 ppg. K. Williams tops OU and the league in FG% at 62.5% (35-56). Carter is the team leader in FGs made and attempted (44-82). Her 53.7% is fifth in the league. Little (26-66, 39.4%) is second on the team in FGs attempted. OU’s 36.0% ranks second in the league to Baylor in 3pt FG% by .005 pts. Gabbi Ortiz (# 21, 5-9 Fr. G) leads the Sooners in 3pters attempts (11-29, 37.9%) while Carter tops them in 3pters made (15-26, 57.7%). That percentage also has her as the top 3pt shooter in the league. Little is the third primary shooter from BTA with 27 attempts. She has made five for a percentage of 18.5%. Five OU players rank in the top 10 in FT% to help OU rank 3rd in the league in FT% at 72.5%. Ortiz has the best percentage at 90.0% (9-10). Maddie Manning (# 23, 6-2 RS Soph. G) has made the most FTs (24-30, 80.0%). K. Williams has attempted the most FTs (20-33, 60.6%). Carter is hitting 71.9% of her FTs (23-32). Little is at 73.1% (19-26). Sharane Campbell-Olds (# 24, 5-10 Sr. G) has hit on 84.0% (21-25). Only three others have attempted at least one FT. Of the six named about, Ortiz is the only one not among the top ten FT leaders by % due to not averaging 2.5 made FTs a game.
K. Williams is the Sooners’ top rebounder at 7.3 rpg. Carter adds 5.3 from her guard spot. Three others add 4+ rpg: Campbell-Olds (4.7 rpg), Vionise Pierre-Louis (# 0, 6-4 Fr. C; 4.2 rpg) and Little (4.1 ppg). Four Sooners have at least 10 assists: Ortiz (19), Carter (14), Little (12) and K. Williams (10). Three others are close to reaching double digit assists in league play: Campbell-Olds (8), Manning (7) and T’ona Edwards (# 2, 5-5 Soph. G; 7 assists). The Sooners are not a big shot blocking team with Williams and Manning leading with seven blocks each. Little (17 steals) and K. Williams (13 steals) are the only Sooners with double digit steals.
OU has started the same group of five in all seven league games: Carter, K. Williams, Little, Campbell-Olds and Ortiz. LaNesia Williams (# 32, 5-7 Fr. G), Nicole Kornet (# 1, 6-1 Jr. G) and Edwards have played in all seven games. Manning, Pierre-Louis and McKenna Treece (# 30, 6-4 Fr. C) have seen action in six games. The 8 to 11 player rotation has nine players averaging at least 11 minutes per game. Little is the only one averaging more than 30 mpg at 32.3 mpg.
Brady (8.0 ppg), Brooke (7.1 ppg) and Nekia (7.0 ppg) are the leading scorers for the Horns. Nekia continues to lead the team inFG% at 57.6% (19-33) but only takes 4.7 shots a game. Brady (19-60, 31.7%) and Empress (17-58, 29.3%) are the top shooters for the Horns. Brooke (16-51, 31.4%) and Kelsey (22-51, 43.1%) make up the quartet of primary shooters for the team. Imani, at 52.0% (13-25) joins Nekia as the other Horn making at least 50% of their FGs. Kelsey has been on a tear the last two games, hitting 11-13 for 84.6% from the field. Brady (7-25, 28.0%), Brooke (6-23, 26.1%) and Krystle (3-17, 17.6%) are the only players that have taken more than 6 threes in Big 12 games. Nekia and Celina are 3-6 (50.0%) have the best percentage from BTA. Nekia has not taken a 3pter in three games and not made one in four. It has also been four games since Celina made a three; three games since she attempted one and two games since she has taken a shot from BTA. Brady has attempted the most FTs (16) while Imani has made the most (13). Brooke (80.0%), Imani (86.7%) and Krystle (83.3%) are all very good from the FT line. Nekia (72.7%) and Empress (77.8%) are also doing well when they get to the FT line.Kelsey is the leading rebounder at 5.9 rpg. Both Empress (4.3 rpg) and Imani (4.1 rpg) provide good support on the boards. Empress leads the team in assists with an average of 2.9 apg. Brady (1.6 apg), Brooke (1.4 apg), Celina (1.3 apg), Krystle (1.3 apg) and Kelsey (1.0 apg) are all making at least one assist per game. Brady is the only Horn in double digits in steals with 11. Krystle is poised to join her with 9 steals. Kelsey (10) and Imani (9) are the top shot blockers.
Kelsey is the only player to start every conference game. Brady and Empress each have six starts in seven league games. Brooke, Brianna, Celina and Krystle have at least one start each. Krystle, Brooke, Kelsey, Brady and Brianna were the starters in the last game. Brady is the only player averaging over 30 mpg at 30.7 mpg. Brooke, Kelsey and Empress all average over 20 mpg. Nekia, Imani, Ariel, Brianna, Celina and Krystle average in the teens. Brianna (10.0 mpg), Ariel (13.3 mpg) and Imani (11.1 mpg) still appear limited as they recover from various injuries. The rotation is an 11 player rotation in Big 12 games. With Nneka’s injury, one spot opens up for one the three posts not getting a lot of PT to step in. Versus ISU, the Horns usually went small with either Ariel, Brady or Brianna at the second post position.
Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas OU
Brianna (5-9 Soph. G) Campbell-Olds (5-10 Sr. G)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) K. Williams (6-3 RS Jr. F)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Little (5-11 RS Soph. G)
Brooke (5-4 Fr. G) Carter (5-9 Soph. G)
Krystle (5-4 Sr. G) Ortiz (5-9 Fr. G) [/pre]
With OU usually starting with a one post/four guard lineup, Horns could also go small for the second game in a row, allowing Imani to come in to relieve Kelsey. For Texas, a problem in the last OU game was matching up with 6-2 G Manning. Horns had trouble stopping Carter from penetrating. ISU’s Moody also gave the Horns fits penetrating. Look for OU guards to penetrate and either finish at the rim or kick it out to an open shooter. With five players hitting over 38% from BTA, help during penetration has to come from the post rather than the guards. Help D is going to be critical for the Horns, especially from the player helping cover for the post. Kelsey provides a strong inside presence inside but will be challenged by K. Williams, who has turned it on during league play to give OU a very solid post. The Texas guards will need to do basically the same as OU, go inside and either finish or drop it off to the open player. The Texas D will be focused on challenging the outside shot while stopping penetration, quite a challenge. Ortiz is one of the more impressive freshmen in the league and the OU PG will pose a problem for whichever of the Texas trio of Brooke, Celina and Krystle matches up with her. I am looking forward to seeing Brooke go against Ortiz.

Horns, surprising, are fourth in the league in FGs attempted. The problem is that they rank seventh in FGs made and seventh in FG%. So Texas is getting shots off, just not making enough. Going into game # 8, Horns are averaging the same number of points that they are giving up. They are seventh in scoring and second in scoring defense. Which means that the margin for error is very small. Being ninth in making 3s doesn’t give much help. Being first in stopping others from making 3s does. Texas has slowly been improving their FT% as well as the number of times they get to shoot FTs. All those factors, better FT shooting, slightly better FG%, strong 3pt D, strong overall D will come into play vs OU. Horns are certainly capable of winning this game, primarily due to their defense.
