OU hosts Texas this Saturday. The last game they played in Austin ended up with an OT win for OU, 71-67. In the past week, each team has taken on either the #1 or the #2 team with similar results. Texas went to Waco last Saturday and was humbled by the #1 Lady Bears, 96.68. OU ventured to Hartford, Conn this past Monday and were trampled by the Huskies 86-45. Texas was sluggish to start off their next game, a win in Austin over Nebraska, 67-55. OU will host Texas in their first game after the UConn loss. Will the Sooners still have a headache from that game? Texas brings a 17-8 season record and a Big 12 record of 6-5 to Norman. OU is 18-7, 8-3. Texas has won 6 of the last 7 conference games after starting out 0-4, including that OT loss to OU in Austin. OU won their five league games before going 3-3 in their next six games. Both teams are 0-6 against A&M and Baylor.
The series began on Sept. 17, 1979 with a game in Norman won by the Horns 66-47. That was the year I moved to Austin and started following the team!
Texas leads the series 22-15. OU won both games in the 2005-06 season, breaking a 3 game Texas winning streak. Beginning with those two games that season, OU has won 8 of the 11 games played, including the first one this season.

OU has three players in double digit scoring in league play: Danielle Robinson (# 13, 5-9 Sr. G) at 19.7 ppg; Aaryn Ellenberg (# 3, 5-7 Fr. G) at 18.0 ppg and Whitney Hand (# 25, 6-1 RS Soph. G) at 11.0 ppg. Ellenbert (33-85, 38.8%); Morgan Hook (# 22, 5-10 Fr. G; 10-34, 29.4%); Hand (18-59, 30.5%); and Roethlisberger (33-34, 32.4%) are the main 3pt threats for OU. Robinson has taken 167 FG attempts, second only to Ellenberg’s 177. But only 5 of those have been 3pters. Robinson has been the best of the Sooners at getting to the FT line and has done an excellent job once there, going 57-68 for 83.8%. She is one of four Sooners that have gotten to the FT line at least 15 times are making at least 77.8% of their FTs. Ellenberg has drained 21-27 (77.8%) of her FTs. Joanna McFarland (# 53, 6-3 Soph. F/C) is at 85.7% (24-28) while Lyndsey Cloman (# 44, 6-3 Soph. F/C) has converted 12-15 (80.0%). OU has four players within one rpg of each other: McFarland leads with 4.8 rps; Hand adds 4.7 rpg; Roethlisberger is averaging 4.6 rpg while Ellenberg is at 3.8 rpg. Robinson also tops the Sooners in assists with 40. Hand is second with 17. Four others have between 10 and 13 assists in league play. McFarland’s 6 blocks leads OU while Hand is second with 5 blocks. Four Sooners have at least 14 steals (Ellenberg). Robinson tops this category with 22 steals. Roethlisberger has 17 steals while Hand has 18 steals.
Robinson, Ellenberg, Hand, and Roethlisberger have started all 11 Big 12 games for OU. Cloman (two starts), McFarland (eight starts) and Griffin (one start) have alternated at the second post position. Griffin had a good game in the second A&M game and a very good one against UConn. She started the Missouri game following the A&M game and is likely to start against Texas. All 13 players on the roster have gotten in league games. Eight players have played in all11 games while Jerena Celina (# 12, 6-5 Jr. C) has played in 10 league games. Robinson (35.2 mpg), Hand (32.8 mpg) and Ellenberg (30.7 mpg) are all averaging over 30 minutes per game. Roethlisberger (27.0 mpg) is the only other player averaging 20 or more minutes per game. Hook, McFarland, Cloman, and Jasmine Hartman (# 45, 5-10 Jr. G) are the other players that have played in all 11 games and are averaging over 10 minutes a game.Texas has three players in double digits: Chassidy (20.2 ppg) and Kat and Ashleigh at 10.5 ppg. Yvonne is just off the mark in joining them at 9.8 ppg. Chassidy has been the most productive 3pt shooter for the Horns, hitting 30-70 for 42.9% from BTA. Yvonne has been the most proficient, hitting 44.4% of her 3s (12-27). Kat (16-51, 31.4%), Ashleigh (8-31, 25.8%) and Chelsea (4-13, 30.8%) are the other 3pt threats for the Horns. Kat’s 90.9 % (20-22) on FTs leads Texas. Chassisy with 46-55 (83.6%) FTs has taken almost twice as many as other teammate. Kristen at 70.0% (14-20) is other Horn hitting at least 70% of her FTs. Kat (8.1 rpg) and Kristen (5.9 rpg) lead the team in rebounding. Ashleigh (5.3 rpg), Chassidy (5.0 rpg) and Ashley (4.5 rpg) help make the Horns the second best rebounding team in league play. Ashleigh leads the way with 39 assists. Yvonne (23), Chassidy (20) and Kat (17) are the other Horns with double digit assists. Ashley leads the way with 34 blocks while Kristen is second with 12. Ashley has 96 blocks this season. She had 103 last season to record the highest number of blocks in a season for a Texas player. Three players have double digit steals in conference play: Chassidy with 19, Ashleigh with 18, and Yvonne with 15.
All 11 players have played in at least one Big 12 game. Tiffany was limited to two minutes in the last game due to the flu while Chelsea sat out due to a concussion. Chassidy, Kat, Ashleigh, Yvonne, Ashley, Kristen, and Tiffany have played in all 11 league games. Chelsea has played in all 10 games she was able to play in. Anne Marie has seen action in 8 of the 11 games. Chassidy, Kat and Ashleigh are all averaging between 33 and 35 minutes a game. Yvonne, Ashley and Kristen all average over 20 minutes a game while Tiffany and Chelsea average over 10 minutes a game. Anne Marie is averaging just over 7 minutes a game.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game. With seven players on each team having starts in Big 12 games, the combinations are kinda big. Horns have had three players start all 11 conference games while OU has four players with that distinction.

Texa OU
Kat (6-2) Roethlisberger (6-1)
Kristen (6-3) Griffin (6-6)
Yvonne (5-7) Robinson (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Hand (6-1)
Ashleigh (5-8) Ellenberg (5-7) [/pre]
Griffin, the skinny frosh C, has played in only seven league games. But she had a good game in the second A&M game, going 3/3 from the field, 4-10 from the FT line and getting 3 rebs in 18 minutes. She followed that with her first Big 12 start against Missouri and put up similar numbers, 3-3 FGs, 1-5 FT, & 3 rebs in 15 minutes. She started against UConn and had a good game: 3-7 FGs, 4-5 FTs, 7 rebs in 28 minutes. She gives OU a presence inside which they had trouble generating before. She will remind Horn fans of a taller and faster Ashley Lindsey in build. Robinson will be key for the Horns to stop. In the last game, she penetrated at what seemed at will at the end to take the Sooners to the win. Horns will have to work to stop her penetration. She took 30 of OU’s 77 FG attempts. OU had trouble stopping Kat who ended up with a double double, including 3-5 from BTA.

It took OT to settle the earlier game in Austin, with Robinson pushing OU to the win. This game should be no different. The one difference seems to be Griffin’s play inside for the Sooners. She will give them more length and present a scoring threat inside. However, the Kristen-Ashley combo is averaging double figure scoring for Texas in most games. They should be able to provide the same. Anne Marie will be important in helping counter the bigs of OU banging inside. The guard play is likely to determine the winner in this contest. Can Texas contain Ellenberg and Robinson and stop penetration while guarding the 3pt line? OU will look to shut down Kat and Chassidy. Can Ashleigh and Yvonne step up if OU shades toward Kat and Chassidy on D? In the last game these two teams played, they went to the line a total of 60 times (Texas 35 and OU 25). Texas faltered badly in the second half and OT at the FT line while OU flourished in those periods, going 10-13 while Texas was 12-21. Statistically, there is not much separating the two. One has a slight advantage in some categories while the other has it in some others. Horns are capable of winning at Norman. They did last season. But it will be a tough game for both squads.
