Texas vs. Nebraska Game 2

The new pitcher is freshman right hander, Connor Mayes.

He inherits a 2-0 count on the right handed batter Schreiber and the winning run at second, with two outs.
He walks him to put two on.

Edrington will bat righty, with two on and two gone.
The count runs full and the runners can go now.
He walks to load the bases.

Placzek, the nine hole hitter, bats righty with the bases loaded and two outs.
A pitch that nearly was wild was blocked and that saved the game.
A 2-0 count brings out Skip to try and settle the freshman down.
He will be taking a strike now if Mayes can pitch one.
He does and it's 2-1.
Another makes it 2-2.
Now 3-2 and they all go and game is on the line.
Fouled off and we do it again.
Another foul ball.
He takes a called strike three and the game goes on.
Big cojonas there by the freshman.

We go to twelve, as Nebraska threatens again and again, but don't score.

Howell pitches the twelfth for the Huskers.

Hinojosa leads off righty and a fly ball to center is one away.
That's like 19 out of the last 20 set down.

Shaw up lefty with one away.
He K's swinging on the curve for two away.

Barrera up righty, with two gone quickly.
He K's looking on a fast ball and this is kind of sad now.

Texas down again in order and hanging by a thread, as Nebraska has another chance to win in the twelfth.

So, after 11 innings, we have 3 hits, and no runs. Yesterday, we had one run and 3 hits after 9 innings. Ouch. Come on guys, let's do it.

Mayes will be back to pitch the twelfth.

Boldt, the lefty will lead off for the Huskers, at the top of the order.
The count runs full and we have been here before.
He walks and here we go again.

A pinch hitter is coming up to bunt, no doubt, from the left side.

Skip wants a lefty to face him.

Pitching change.

The new pitcher for Texas is lefty, Ty Culbreth.

He has a runner at first and nobody out.
The pinch hitter is lefty hitting, Christian Cox.
He squares and the sac goes 5-3 to move Boldt to second as the winning run, with one down.

Headley bats lefty and had a chance to win it his last at bat. He is back with another chance now.
A wild pitch sends Boldt to third.
The infield has to come in and the outfield.
A chop to the mound and I guess Cantu blocked the plate because Culbreth took forever on the throw and it was high.
He was safe, but the game goes on because the throw beat him, but he beat the tag and touched the plate.

Wow, so the game goes on and on it seems.

Runner at first for the catcher Lubach, batting righty, with two gone.
He pops out to second and that retires the side.

Well the thread broke, and the game should be over, but it goes on, as Texas caught a big break on the call at the plate.

After twelve tied still 0-0.

Howell still works as the thirteenth begins.

Marlow will lead off and K's swinging for one away.
Boy, I have never seen anything like the futility, Texas has on offense right now.

Barrera bats righty with one gone.
He K's also swinging, there is a theme here I believe.

Boswell bats lefty with two gone if he is retired, it would be nine hitless innings since Texas had a safety.
He walks and I guess we won't try to steal, as we never do.

Macalla bats lefty as the DH, with two gone.
A wild pitch sends Boswell to second, I guess he had to go there.
So an elusive hit could give Texas the first run of the game.
The count runs full and he walks to put two on.

Gurwitz, at the bottom of the order could give the Horns the lead.

Coach out and a change is made.

The new Husker hurler is right hander, Jeff Chesnutt.

Ben Kennedy, will pinch hit for him, from the left side.
He sends a high foul down by the side wall and Huskers go down like bowling pins as it falls.
Of course he takes a curve right down the middle for a called strike three to end the frame.

Nine innings without a hit for Texas now and to the bottom of thirteen tied 0-0.

second game of double hitter and 13 innings in the books on game @ # 2 -the players must be starting to tire some...

Culbreth will pitch in the lucky thirteenth for the Horns.
Stell comes in for Gurwitz, in center.

Jake Meyers, from the right side will pinch hit, as the lead off hitter.
He singles through the right side for another lead runner and this is the pattern now.

Darby is up left handed to bunt him over.
He swings and misses at 1-0 and then fouls off the bunt attempt.
A ground ball to first and the 3-6 force is one down, as the relay was way late.

Schreiber bats righty, with one on and one down.
A ground ball by Hinojosa and into left puts runners on first and second with one away.

Skip out and another change is made.

The hard throwing freshman right hander is Kyle Johnston. His issue is command and he can be wild and that is the kiss of death for relievers.

He has runners on first and second and one down.

Edrington will bat right handed against him.
He walks him and that loads the bases.
It's what you worried about and it happened.

Skip out and another change.

Jake McKenzie, the freshman right hander, comes in with the game again on the line.

The bases are loaded with one out.

The right handed hitting nine hole hitter is Placzek to face him.
How many times can Texas escape?

Placzek in the box and the infield at double play depth.
The count runs full on a border line pitch.
A ground ball to short and the throw to second and the relay is wide and somehow Barrera keeps his toe on the bag for the 6-4-3 double play to keep this game alive.

It's the game that just won't die and after thirteen this game tries to go in as the first classic thread on the new Hornfans site. We stay tied at 0-0.

We refuse to lose and Nebrasky (Hank Hill reference) refuses to win... can our bats come alive and allow us to steal a win?

Chessnut will stay on for the fourteenth.

Johnson at the top of the order will lead off, from the right side.
A base hit, an actual hit, the first in nine innings!

Hinojosa bats righty with one on and looks to bunt him over.
He bunts foul and now will have to most likely swing away.
He squares and then swings away and misses for another K and one down.

Shaw up with one on and one away from the left side.
We can't even get the bunt down when we do get a rare hit.
So as result a ground ball to short is a 6-4-3 double play to retire the side.

A hit and then out quickly and bottom of fourteen and still 0-0.

Travis Duke will pitch the fourteenth for Texas.

The dangerous lead off man is Boldt, leading off for Nebraska.
The lefty hitter steps in and K's swinging out a pitch outside for a big first out.

Cox is up lefty, as he pinch hit and is now playing left field.
One down for him and K's swinging at a pitch head high for two quick outs.

Headley, who is like 0-7 today bats lefty with two down.
Sorry it's 0-6 and now 0-7 as he K's swinging as Duke strikes out the side.

What, no drama for the Horns, nope. We go to the fifteenth tied 0-0 and how much longer can I go?:smile1:

Chessnut pitches on in the fifteenth.

Barrera leads off for Texas, from the right side.
A one hopper to short for a 6-3 out and one away.

Marlow bats lefty with one away.
He lines a shot right at the center fielder for two quick outs.

Cantu will bat righty, with two gone.
Another grounder to short and the 6-3 retires the side in order.

Bottom of fifteenth and 0-0.

Duke is back again for the fifteenth, after striking out the side last inning.

Lubach leads off, from the right side for the Huskers.
A 1-2 pitch hits him and another lead man on.

Meyers bats from the right side, with one on.
He bunts and the 1-3 sac, for the umpteenth time puts the winning run in scoring position.

Darby bats lefty, with one out and the winning run at second.
A liner to right and Johnson boots the hop and I think the runner would have held up, if he fields it cleanly.

The single wins the game for the second time really for Nebraska 1-0.

I am pooped and need some time to recover.

Thanks for the updates. Too bad the Horns couldn't make it happen. They need to step it up.

Texas got a big break to keep the game going on the bad call at the plate. The Horns had no offense to speak of and you knew sooner or later they were going to lose. It just happened later.

What can you say, the pitching was outstanding and got no support, other than some good defensive plays. It's something that happens way too much. I'm glad we were using the new ball today, yeah right. The Horns need some offense stat, or they are going to get swept in this series and then run into a buzz saw in Stillwater next week. :hookem:

So, in 24 innings, we've scored 1 run, with 7 hits. Don't think we even had a runner to get past 2nd base today. Can't win any games like this. I'm seeing that we are not nearly as good as Augie would have had us believe early on. Still a lot of ball to be played, but something's got to improve for us to get to Omaha.

Just like basketball, same ol'story. Great pitching and defense but no offense. Don't get me wrong, I am not calling for any kind of change but at some point we have to address the teams batting. I am not smart enough to know what can be done to produce more runs.

Thank, NB, for your ever reliable moderation and chronicling of the games.

Pitching and defense have worked incredibly well for Augie for a LONG time (we all know he's won more games than anybody else in his job ever), but he's got to get some offense one of these years. Not sure what the answer is, but his Fullerton teams often had a lot of pop, so surely he realizes that he needs to recruit a somewhat different type of player in today's NCAA baseball environment to make that happen? No?
