Texas vs Maryland Game Thread

We will win
I wish I shared your confidence, but I fear this will be a replay of many games last year, losing a winnable game. Already many chances to make plays to take control of the game and not making them, starting with Boyd’s dropped int.

Is Herman a CEO type coach or a Coordinator type coach? What I mean by this is that to me, a CEO coach is wholly dependent upon his coordinators while a coordinator coach is someone who brings a tactical advantage (like Lincoln Riley?). The CEO coach seems to have to "buy" a system or a scheme while the coordinator type coach will never lose his continuity because he is the schematic advantage. Herman was an offensive coordinator. Should he take over the offense completely? I heard the announcer say earlier in today's game that Maryland's interim coach talked to Riley who said, "You don't have to know defense but you need to know your defensive players. You have to pop in there and make sure they know you." So Riley depends on Stoops but he has that machine going on the other side of the ball.

I know we used to rip Greg Davis but early on he was HUGE for Mack because he was Mack's guy and didn't appear to be content to be the OC for The University of Texas. So Mack had that continuity. But later he was throwing darts with his coordinators and making philosophical changes.

But I could be wrong.

God I'm bored.

Leinhart basically said Texas is having to grind out their offense; we're having to work too hard. We don't have a physical advantage in our running game so the grind is not tactical. It's just not that good. I hear you guys saying Shane should play but is it really on Sam that the passing game is not clicking better? Seemed as if he had some long looks and I wonder if the route tree is creating open receivers. OU seems to be able to create open receivers all day long with their patterns.

Is this a redundant question? I got burned on the Charlie koolaid and taken a wait and see approach with TH. I'll vote coordinator type coach right now.

Not sure if it's redundant. I was just trying to figure Herman out and why he would hang on to Beck.

They also have hours to throw. We're doing much better than last year with pass blocking, but we're still nowhere near their level.

Yeah, it's like we're trying to run to set up the pass. But the runs aren't scary enough to set up anything. The successful passes have mostly set up themselves and the running game "threat" has nothing to do with it.

It just seems to me that OU could carve people up with people like Iglesias and other receivers not necessarily cut out for the next level. Short bursts, hard cuts, lots of crossing, picks, movement movement movement..

The team has underperformed in all aspects of the Game: Offense, Defense and special teams. A fifteen yard punt from our own five. Really??? F'g really???

Play calling has been mediocre. Sam has been average at best. Receivers are slightly above average.

But the biggest disappointment is the defense. Failing at critical times. In love with the blitz while not containing the QB, unable to stop the run in critical situations.

We cannot win with this offense unless the Defense is outstanding. So far, the D is not outstanding.

The 4th down conversion by Maryland's QB seemed to be because our entire line was slanting to the right and there was nobody home on the left (our left) and he easily went around with lots of room. It's just one play but is this a lack of discipline or some sort of stunt that was the wrong call? Quien sabe.

Wish we would have just kept Gilbert at OC. Give us some continuity coming into the 1st year and he was much better than Beck. Don't think we even tried.

A head coach cannot have a reputation of giving up on assistants too quickly.

*********!

We are Texas! We pay top dollar & provide outstanding benefits. We can do what we want to do, when we want do it.

Lou Holtz fired his DC in the middle of a game. Did that stop people from wanting to work for him or ND?

Glass half-full: Last year also, the defense played awful in game 1, and then played good to great almost the whole rest of the year.

Glass half-empty: But last year that defense had Poona Ford, Malik Jefferson, Holton Hill, and DeShon Elliott.

Glass half-full: We didn't have 3 of those 4 guys in the Bowl Game against Missouri, either and still played very good on defense against a pretty good offense.

Glass half-empty: Meaningless bowl games are often crapshoots are probably less of a measure of a team's actual ability than regular season games are.

Glass half-full: But openers are often less of a measure than the rest of the season is.

It's my take that Texas is not acting like Texas. Charlie and Herman seemed to be "prudent" spending; not Jones like spending. The administration needs to accept that people will hate Texas no matter what. You might as well do something very hateful for example like making the Jimbo Fisher offer to Saban two coaches ago. What the heck. I don't know why people around here dislike Saban. We want to win. We havae the money. It's that simple. Stop pinching pennies.

Or are the pockets really not that deep?

Nope. 5-7 records are much worse. There will always be an assistant to be hired.
