#8 (AP)/#7 (USA Today) Texas (22-2; 11-2) will host unranked KSU (16-8; 6-7) Wednesday night at 7 PM. Horns will be looking for their third straight win over the Wildcats and a sweep this season. Former UT Coach Gail Goestenkors will be honored at the game for her role in helping Texas reach 1000 wins this season. Horns are coming off their second loss of the season. They will look to rebound after a horrible fourth quarter that led to an OU win in Norman. Horns led at the end of the third by four pts , but were outscored 29-7 in the fourth. Meanwhile, KSU is coming off two home wins where they have broken 80 in each game, including an 87-71 thrashing of OU.
Stats for KSU are from the Big 12 Individual Conferences since the KSU website does not separate out season stats from conference stats like most of the Big 12 teams.
Breanna Lewis (# 22, 6-5 Jr. C) is the leading scorer for the Wildcats, averaging 15.5 ppg. Kindred Wesemann (# 24, 5-6 Jr. G) adds 12.7 ppg. Lewis tops KSU in FG% at 52.5% (84-160). Wesemann is the top 3pt threat, hitting 36 of 95 treys for a 37.9% from BTA. Kaylee Page (# 1, 6-2 Soph. F) is second on the team, making 16 3s in conference play. Wesemann and Shaelyn Martin (# 50, 6-0 Soph. G) are the top FT shooters for KSU. Wesemann ranks 9th in the league with a FT% of 78.6% (33-42) while Martin is 15th at 69.2% (27-39).
Lewis (7.4 rpg) and Martin (6.5 rpg) are the leading rebounders for the ‘Cats. Wesemann (2.9 apg) and Martin (2.6 apg) are the top distributors for KSU. Wesemann and Megan Deines (# 15, 6-1 Sr. G) are tops in taking the ball away from opponents. Wesemann averages 2.0 spt while Deines averages 1.6 spg. Lewis is third in the league in blocked shots at 2.2 bpg.
Lewis, Wesemann, Page and Martin have started all 13 Big 12 games for the Wildcats. Deines has started 11 of the 13 league games, including the last nine. Erica Young (# 2, 6-1 Jr. F) started games three and four after Deines had started the first two Big 12 games. For the season, only seven players average double digit minutes with Wesemann tops at 32.5 mpg. In Big 12 game, that jumps to 34.8 mpg. Kayla Goth (# 10, 6-1 Fr. G) joins the starting five and Brianna (Bri) Craig (# 20, 5-10 Sr. G) in the main rotation although Young, Antoinette Taylor (# 11, 5-7 Sr. G). Jessica Sheble (# 0, 6-3 Jr. F) and Kelly Thomson (# 12, 5-9 RS Jr. G) have seen action in most games.
Horns head into this game with three players averaging double figures: Imani (12.9 ppg), Brooke (11.5 ppg) and Ariel (10.5 ppg). Imani (62-122), Brooke (52-115) and Empress (38-119) have reached triple digits in FGs attempted. Ariel (49-90) is poised to join that group. Ariel (54.4%), Kelsey (53.4%), Imani (50.8%) and Tasia (52.9%) lead the team in FG%. Brooke is the top 3pt threat for the Horns as she has taken almost double the number of threes as anyone else. She has also almost tripled the number treys made, going 27-60 for 45.0%. Ariel (10-28; 35.7%), Empress (10-31; 32.3%) and Celina (11-36; 30.6%) are the other main shooters from BTA. Imani has hit 43-53 FTs for 81.1%. The FTs made and attempted lead the Horns. Ariel (80.0%), Empress (77.8%), Kelsey (a team leading 84.2%), Brianna (72.0%) and Jordan (78.6%) contribute to a team FT% of 72.0%.
Imani is averaging 10.8 rpg to remain one of two Big 12 players averaging a double double in conference games. Kelsey (4.8 rpg), Celina (4.7 rpg) and Brianna (4.5 rpg) along with Imani help to make Texas one of the top rebounding teams in the league. Celina average 4.7 apg with Brooke and Empress each pitching with 2.2 apg. Brianna remains the leader in steals with 23. Celina has 18 and Brooke and Ariel 14 apiece. Imani’s 56 blocks rank first on the team with Kelsey second with 16.
Empress, Brooke and Imani have started all 13 Big 12 games to date. Celina and Ariel have been starters for 12 and three games, respectively. Brooke is the only Horn averaging over 30 mpg at 31.0 mpg. Imani, Ariel, Empress, Brianna and Celina all average 20 plus mpg. Kelsey is just short at 19.8 mpg while LaShann also averages in the teens in the 11 games she has seen action in.
Projected starting lineup based on the last game:
Texas______________KSU
Imani (6-7)________ Lewis (6-5)
Ariel (5-11)_______ K. Page (6-2)
Empress (5-9)_____ Deines (6-1)
Celina (5-8)_______ Martin (6-0)
Brooke (5-4)______ Wesemann (5-6)
Horns held Wesemann, one of the leading 3pt shooters in the league, to 2-9 from BTA. Only Lewis (6-12 for 12 pts) and Sheble off the bench (10 pts) were effective scoring. Brooke hit 4 3pters and Kelsey was effective inside while Imani was in foul trouble and eventually fouled out after playing 15 minutes. Look for Imani and Kelsey to establish their presence inside on both ends and for our guards to try to shut down Wesemann one more time. Lewis is big enough and agile enough to cause problems inside for the Horns. K. Page gives KSU another tall player inside that can score and rebound. Although every starter except Lewis logged 30+ minutes in the first game, KSU did have five reserves play at least six minutes each. The Texas bench is deeper and between 8-10 players should see double digit minutes. Brooke has been our main offensive weapon the last couple of games. KSU will seek to shut her down, same as we will seek to do to Wesemann , who pretty much controls the offense for KSU.

Only ISU has taken more 3pters than KSU and that by 3 attempts. Only TCU’s 85 made 3s top KSU’s 83. KSU is going to shoot the three and Wesemann is the leading shooter. In the first game, of the 45 FGs attempted 18 were treys. Look for a similar game plan here. KSU will play zone defense. Ariel and Brianna especially will need to find the soft spots in the zone and hit those mid range jumpers. KSU is last in 3pt defense. Horns should be able to find open shots from BTA with ball movement. Our man and/or zone will need to deny Wesemann any open looks. KSU will try to slow the game down. Horns will look to go uptempo.
Game time is Wed. at 7 PM at the FEC. The game will be televised on LHN with the Horn, 104.9 FM carrying the radio broadcast.
