Texas vs Kansas 01/16/2023

Does anyone know what happened to Kathy Harston on the radio broadcasts? I thought she did a really good job.
She is having health issues. I wish her well and speedy recovery. That said, I am enjoying Eryn. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Fun to listen to her.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not really a fan of Eryn’s style (I know she’s a former player, but referring to the team as “we” gets on my nerves for any analyst), but to each his own.

I have yet to meet a player who wants less minutes. Starters earn those minutes. Want those minutes. Deserve those minutes. And coming off a close loss to KState they need those minutes so the next close game goes our way.

The place to get better is in the practice gym. Games are 40 minutes and you play to win every minute. A blow out this week is a tight game next week. When Vic subbed in the 4th we simply started trading baskets. That tells me those subs haven’t fully committed to the defense that is expected of them. But, like all of you, I’m simply guessing. There are lots and lots of reasons why someone is or isn’t getting more or less minutes.

Coaches can’t be held hostage by the transfer portal. Some players buy into the system and some don’t. Those that don't shouldn’t be able to take minutes away from those that do. When starters give you a blowout, you don’t thank them by putting them on the bench early.

Amo is clearly working her butt off to get back into shape and contribute. I sincerely doubt she wants to sit on the bench because she might get injured. She had to ride that bench for too many minutes because of injuries. If she can handle 40 I sure as hell would give her 40. But in the end, I’m just a fan sitting in the stands who has no idea what’s going on in the locker room. Which translates into “what the hell do I know?” :idk:

Great win. Now let’s go take down OSU with the same intensity. :beertoast:
100% agree with your excellent post. Clear thinking such as this is refreshing and should be required reading.

Of course, everyone has a right to share their opinion here, regardless how naive. I just shared mine.

As fans, we often think we know more than we do just because we watched a game, without any insight into what went into the private playing decisions that were made for the betterment of the team.

I've definitely seen games where players are asking to be subbed out when they are winded. So, that proves players do want less minutes because being left in while they are gassed hurts the team, especially on defense.

Vic also commented that Aaliyah Moore has been battling tendinitis in her non-surgically repaired knee. Bringing her to play the final two minutes with a 30-point lead is an unnecessary risk.

Come conference tournament time, if Vic has any plans on winning the final Big 12 championship, he's going to have reduce minutes for each starter based on games being played on consecutive days; if you don't start bringing in the bench players during conference game blowouts, they won't be ready to help the team in Kansas City.

Post game presser. As much as I love and miss Rori, I think it's time to politely shut down the questions about playing without her. It's done... and it's BEEN done. Let's focus on the available players that we do have to finish the season with.

It’s sure nice to hear all the positive comments in a dominating game. I thoroughly enjoyed a stress free game. Faye looks so confident and doing things I didn’t realize she could. Moore looked like the player I thought we were getting out of high school. Booker just continues to show off. Just WOW. I really like this team….even without Harmon. They are hard to play against. There will be close games as without the full court pressure, there are fewer turnovers and fewer easy points. It is what it is. I’m also trying to realize there WILL be change to the roster next year. Would like to keep ‘em all but with the 3 freshmen coming in, the math simply doesn’t work. So I’m enjoying each game. Some mighty fine games coming up in next two weeks. Land Thieves in Austin is always fun. I’m gonna travel to Baylor…..with the big focus on revenge against KState. Hook ‘Em

Did we ever find out why Faye did not play Saturday at KSU?

Just call me Steve Naive. :D

Even Andrea stated yesterday that we were so abysmally thin at guard that
Codio, Maul, and Jak needed playing time so they were ready when we needed them.

Starters do earn the right to start, they are the better more experienced players giving you the best chance to win. But if you are 30 points up on a team in the second half what helps the team win going forward? Playing those tired players 40 minutes risking injury and having no other players ready to step in if the starters get hurt?
Or giving your only other guards time on the floor to make mistakes to work on, get up to game speed and keep them engaged in the team success? The only reason I can think of to keep the starters out there is to Mulkey the game and win by as much possible to keep the NET rating up.

Besides, I like to see the young players play.

I can offer no definitive answer and I question whether it will ever be revealed, but, connecting the dots, I sense a strong relationship between the no-play game and the inspired following game.

With all the buzz about playing time dominating the conversation, I'd like to point out that what I saw out of Jak was far and away the best game she has played for Texas, and on both ends of the court. So I want to offer my congratulations to her, and hopefully, this performance will earn her more PT in the future.

WOW, to quote Coach Vic, the team was "humming". I had my fingers crossed when I said I hoped for a 20+ game from Shaylee...instead the entire team seemed to step up! Very pleased. Very pleased, indeed!

I always remember Aston saying freshman players have such a transition from high school to college. They do not anticipate the defense of strong opponents. With Booker getting more comfortable in running the offense, we just need 3-4 players step up on offense. Sometimes, Shaylee and Holle are on, and sometimes, they are not. We have to get the rest of the players expect that they need to score and not look only to Booker to shoot. We have solid defense. But we need to bring the offense. I wish we would look forward but it is natural to do this when you build an entire team around one player.

I’m gonna start it up again. I’ve been very pleased with the half court offense Schaefer is now running. Mixing in some really good sets with hard screens…..with dribble drive/hand-offs. Seems to me not the focus on pick&roll….or pick&pop that is so prevalent in men’s game. Perhaps I missed those? I remember quite a bit of criticism of the man to man offenses early on in Schaefer’s tenure/. But I like the new sets where Gonzalez and Holle get open for the three. Sometimes those sets seem to be slow developing and sometimes it’s played well…..such as final play in KState game. I even saw some good plays against the KS zone and how they attacked it. Moore at the elbows seems lethal and Muhammad at short corner…and other seem good. For sure didn’t see much if any stagnant play against their zone. This team can for sure score and it takes really good D to slow it down.

So does Faye have no idea where she's throwing the ball or was she intentionally throwing it to the other team?
With Hadi it seems to be the same thing as when she gets the ball in the paint with her back to the basket, then slings the ball up at the rim without squaring up and finding her defender. She doesn't gather herself mentally before committing to a passing action and gets caught without that split second of forethought needed to read the defense.

Say what you want about the AAS coverage of Texas WBB - it has improved quite a bit since Vic took over - but I can't find any Kansas-based coverage of last night's game. I was trying to find Schneider's post game press conference because it was mentioned during Vic's - nothing.

If you watched the sidelines last night, you might have noticed that Vic’s jacket never came off. Obviously he was pleased and that is confirmed in the press conference.

At the same time he seemed to be screaming/coaching until the final minute. He’s still not seeing what he needs to see and he is using every minute of every game to improve.

I’m just going to agree to disagree with some of you. You may be right. But I simply do not think starters benefit from getting more bench time. And come tournament time, I think they are better prepared for back to back games rather than less.

Trial by fire.
40 minutes both ways.
Always room to improve.
Play every game knowing it affects your bracket placement.
Confidence building.
Prove it in practice.

I could go on…

Holle is a perfect example of someone who earned her spot just like Booker is a perfect example of someone who was ready to go from day one. Neither of those suggest Vic sits someone because he’s stubborn. I’m happy to assume he knows what he is doing. And I believe some of you make a great argument for the opposite.

But you know what they say - no one works harder than the fans.

Not. :smokin:

Agree. I usually want to watch the other team’s presser more than our own. They used to release them both back to back. Now I can almost never find the opposing team’s presser.

That's a solid observation. She has seemed flustered/rushed at times throughout her career here.

We got 91 points from 10 different players with 4 in double digits including Gonzales and Faye. I, for one, have zero issues with our offensive output.

We are:
  • #2 in the nation for scoring margin
  • #4 nationally in field goal percentage
  • #7 in scoring offense.

The AAS coverage is wonderful - in part because it’s Austin and UT, part because of the booming popularity of women’s sports. (I switched from print to online subscriptions to my local papers 15 years ago and I’m a former newspaper journalist.) We might not like a certain reporter or a specific story, but the AAS pays attention, which is not the case in many markets. I’m surprised that we still have coach and player media availability at all; many schools don’t bother or use sports information department prepared reports. Many media outlets no longer cover sports. I could go on … if you are interested in changes in media, take a look at the Columbia Journalism Review, American Journalism Review or the Poynter Institute.

Oh, wait. This is a basketball thread … sorry, got carried away! Expect us to blow away OSU. ISU always plays us tough, we’ll get KSU at home and revenge in Waco.
Hook’em!

I'll add a bit to what I posted earlier today and yesterday.

I've for sure grown to believe over the last 20 years that players earn their game minutes based on how they perform in practice; most head coaches seem to follow that mindset. And, they still have to produce in the actual games based on the coaches' expectations and standards. That's a great philosophy when you have quality depth at every position, and you aren't constantly juggling starters and immediate backups based on injuries.

When you lose a starter/leader for the season, and when you have 2-3 other players working their way back from injuries, you are not dealing with a completely healthy roster each and every night, especially when additional injuries occur and impact the roster prior to the next game.

Vic's comments the other day stating he needs to get more out of Maul and Ndjakalenga don't add up with how many minutes he played them in our 30+ point blowout on Tuesday night, or our blowout wins at Tech and West Virginia. In the end, he makes those decisions. But saying one thing to the media and doing another in game management is definitely confusing to those of us looking at things from the outside.

My mind has enough of the KS game. Ready to move on. Wonder if the Horns can do it again Saturday against OSU. Somebody go to work and start a new thread and tell me what to expect from the Cowboys. I’m too lazy. Or maybe too tired. My child bride had knee replacement surgery 8 days ago. Old injuries from high school basketball and volleyball so I am sympathetic to these 5 Horns players and their ACL injuries. I’ve been full time nurse and need some basketball talk between icings and physical therapy and cooking/cleaning/washing/etc. Did you hear me say how much more appreciative I am of my wife now? HOOK EM.

You're aware Jak got 15 minutes vs Kansas, right? That's more than Taylor (12), and the same as Amina.

I agree with you that Maul and Codio could (and should) have logged more than the 5 and 3 they received.

I actually didn't think it was double-digit minutes. And she played very well.
Prior to KU, she played:

- KSU: 0 minutes
- TCU: 2 minutes
- WVU: 0 minutes
- Tech: 2 minutes
- Baylor: 7 minutes

So, against KU she played more minutes combined than the first 5 conference games of the season. Hopefully that's a good trend moving forward.

I will say that Jordana Codio looked more fluid moving around on the court than Maul. So, guessing her reason for lack of playing time is not any kind of nagging injury. She's another player who I hope can come in and provide some minutes in order to rest Gonzales and Holle a minute here and there.

Well, it definitely didn't seem injury-related as to why Faye didn't play at KSU based on how she was running up and down the court easily against KU. And, based on how the team benches don't face the TV cameras, I never got a chance to see her demeanor in Manhattan; I believe another poster stated that she seemed engaged on the bench.

So, that leaves some sort of coach's suspension as the reason she did not play. I recall Vic not playing Matharu for the entire first half at a game in Waco; lost that game without much of a fight. I hate it that we could have won that game at KSU had Hadi played. But, head coaches have to show tough love to get their point across even if it hurts the W/L record.

Typically, the radio guys/gals are really good about providing those tidbits as to why certain players aren't dressed or playing; TV or streaming folks not so much.

Every time I see a player wearing a knee brace my mind says "she's hurt, she's slower than normal, she's delicate." Gisella, Jordana, Aaliyah, Shaylee....... Rori.....
