Texas vs DePaul 10/30/22

First postgame presser of new season with no mics on folks with the questions. Can't anyone in media understand that this is a major gripe? Nothing like trying to figure out what the heck the question was by the answer being given.

One of the things I liked the best is it didn't appear as if the players took many bad shots, or shots way too early in the possession. I think Moore took a wide open 3-point shot early in the game where she was wide open, but that was the only shot selection decision that comes to mind. Gaston seemed to understand that she can get easy buckets spending more time posting up around the rim, and on putbacks; we really don't need her to float to the perimeter very often.

I really like Sonya's mid-range game. I remember it standing out during the highlights I had watched after she committed, but "highlights" are always the good plays and made shots. Yesterday, she showed what a nice shooting touch she has when she gets the ball where she needs it; those are going to be the soft spots in the 2-3 zone defenses we'll see every game in Big 12 play. She shoots with so much confidence.

Speaking of Sonya, she did take that turn around fade away one-footed jumper (which I hated when Holmes used to attempt it); but, since she found nothing but net, I'm gonna assume it's a shot she's mastered in practice and is actually capable of hitting in actual games.

Pleasantly surprised at Amina Muhammad's ball handling. Watching her and Ndjakalenga, along with Moore, Morris, and Gonzales be able to be included in the dribble drive offense just increases our options with Harmon and Holle who are already very experienced running it.

What can I say about Hadi Faye? She's exactly what I thought she'd be as far as pure athleticism, running the floor, strength, hops, interior post defense, and especially rebounding. Huge bonus that she is capable of hitting her free throws because she is going to get fouled a lot this season. She didn't show her shot-blocking skills (which is fine as so many fouls were being called yesterday), but that will come as her timing returns after not having played in actual games since February.

On the negative side, too many sloppy plays under our opponent's basket after getting the rebound or steal; just seemed like DePaul was a step quicker and capitalized on our lazy passes or failure to secure the ball. I'm confident that will be addressed. Conversely, I really liked a lot of our set inbound plays under our own basket; Rori inbounding to Amina and Hadi resulted in some easy layups.

I got some answers. Shooting significantly improved, although want to see it against a zone. We have three that can play point……Harmon, Gonzalez and Morris. D has potential to be really good….it started slow but as the game went on, in spurts it was outstanding. Harmon just absolutely controls the game and makes the right decisions. What a comfort that provides to a coach/team/fans……can’t be emphasized too much. More turnovers than Schaefer liked but Gonzalez and Morris have good decision-making skills. Our bigs are mobil and quick…..and will be challenged by bigger teams…..but I think they are a plus plus. Faye has good hands and shooting touch/form…..huge upside in all aspects. Holle makes me smile….love what she does. Two freshman are delights…..will take lumps at times but so encouraging. Can your percentage be higher than 8 for 8 for Gaston? Anybody who rolls out a “Dirk” in first game can play for my team. Did I say how excited I am to watch this team?

I'm not too surprised that they were able to score as much as they did, seeing that DePaul's a team that doesn't really emphasize defense and focuses more on offense. I would like to know the shooting percentage from the three point line for UT.

And from the above post, DePaul didn't play any zone which is what I was looking for because the players have to think more on offense against a zone rather than just facing man and running regular offense.

Holding DePaul to 60 points with a low percentage is what's impressive to me. Especially considering the fact that they obviously had a ton of possessions with UT scoring so much.

And for those who have attended the games in Moody, I would like to know what the viewing experience is like as compared to the Erwin center? Thanks.

I personally prefer the Erwin Center hands down. The burnt orange version of color at Moody is just way off to me. I’m sure many will disagree. The arena is nice, but I miss the Erwin Enter.

You’re not wrong about that color. Annoys the heck out of me. We are white and burnt orange not Red-orange. I think someone in marketing decided to rebrand in a color they thought was more exciting but that’s not who we are. That’s another angry message to Chris Del Conte… Tradition dammit.

I understand that most fans don't like the present day burnt orange color. And that the people who don't like it think that the burnt orange should always be the color of the longhorn on the football helmet. But I'm speaking interms of the sight lines, and whether or not it's a close up feel. Most of the people that didn't like the Erwin center always complained about the cavernous feel to it.

For me, not a big difference which surprised me. It’s louder, but I preferred the old arena…. Maybe a bit closer but not a big difference…

I have a closet full of different shades of “burnt” orange. Prefer old school shade. It would be interesting to sit in on discussions with decision makers on colors. My long standing theory is they change it so often so folks want to buy new digs. More money. I’m with kurupt on the atmosphere for basketball. It looks nice. The players say good things. I’ve always been pessimistic about multi-functional arenas as they compromise some things to make concerts, etc. at the expense of primary function (basketball I think). Since most activities are not basketball, I understand. The upper barriers or curtains look cheesy to me. Understand reasoning and maybe someday will remove the curtains for basketball. I just want it to be excellent for its primary stated function. Others that actually been there for basketball…..thoughts on Moody?

Andrea Lloyd said you are closer with better sight lines because the incline is steeper than the FEC. She kept mentioning the fans being “right on top of you”. Perhaps that’s the feel if you’re on the court I don’t know. I’m anxious to find out for myself.

Another vote against the new reddish orange. Horrible on TV and was hoping it’s not that way in person

I'll trade the 3 pointers for the made free throws. I knew we would be more athletic but am very pleasantly surprised by Amina's ball handling and her running the court. Coming in I said she wss Lattimore. Part deux pleasantly proven wrong.
Jack was trying too hard but love her quicks.

I love the sight lines at Moody. My seats are on row A just above the lower level seats and because Moody is steeper, no one in front of me blocks my view of the court. It's great for a shortie like me. I am much much closer to the court now and closer to center court. It is too loud for my old ears, but I suppose the kids like it.

A nice perk is that if you want to get something to eat, you can sit at the counter in the food court and still watch the game. I think that is great.

Hmmmm, not sure why it looks like I am a new poster, been here since the beginning of this forum. Oh well.......

Moody delivers exactly what it was designed to do, make you feel you're extremely close to the players. My opinion was that the oval design had an effect of making you feel further back than you were physically. Like watching TV while leaning backwards away from the television.

The really weird part was that by having the Moody seats so "square and vertical" compared to Erwin, it made it feel that fewer fans were at the game. Weird optical effect.

This is probably just me looking for something to quibble about but it seemed like, when Shaylee was at point, she was not as quick to bring the ball up the court as Rori - with or without a defender pressing her. On rewatch, I noticed she was crossing half court with 22-23 seconds on the shot clock whereas Rori was usually at 23-25. Those seconds may not appear significant but when they’re running the dribble-weave, they could be the difference between getting that extra pass/drive and taking a slightly less advantageous, rushed shot.

Yes, not all point guards play the exact same way. Those couple of seconds are among the many reasons Rori is one of the very best point guards in the nation, and already one of the two or three best we have ever had at Texas.

Considering Shaylee was herself 2nd team All American as a point guard, 2 seconds or so is pretty meaningless. She is still acclimating to Vic’s style and requirements. Rori is obviously our pg, but to have a player as poised, confident and skilled as Shaylee that can back up Rori AND play the wing, is a blessing. If Vic wants her to be quicker up the court, I’m sure she will adjust. We simply did not have that depth last year. Also, she’s a great passer and playmaker from the wing. Rori has ALOT more to work with this year….thank goodness.

She also has a big, honkin' knee brace on her leg. I'll give her the 2 seconds.

I think the learning the system is a big part. I noticed that in the second half when Shaylee was bringing the ball up, several times she was looking at Schaefer expecting guidance. I don't know if Rori somehow gets that same guidance without looking directly at Schaefer but that is one difference I say between the two. As far as the arena...I love it. I feel like I'm so much closer to the game. The noise was loud. Hopefully some of the background sounds will be toned down. My wife noted the same but said it was also like that during a concert she went to. I did ask why the running stats weren't on the banner. That too is coming as everyone adjusts to the new arena.

Love Moody. Love it. The players love it. The greater/closer connection between players and fans is a huge home court advantage. Not seeing seats much less empty seats in the upper deck is fantastic. Having that upper deck hidden behind screens is brilliant. The seats are comfortable. No problems seeing over the row in front of you. Great food options. Clean bathrooms. A parking garage in spitting distance. I didn’t even notice the colors. As long as it’s not Tennessee orange, I’m good. Only complaint is the blackout curtains up at the lounge area. Wish they would leave it open so you can watch the game from the bar area if you wanted to.

Way too early to be picking apart little things the players/team needs to improve on. I'll wait until late January or early February to start concerning myself with that stuff.

Excellent performance by the ladies. Only two things concern me.
  1. The guard depth. We’ve essentially only got 3 kids playing the pg/sg position. It’s unlikely that Rori, Shaylee AND Sonia get into foul trouble in the same game but I could easily see a scenario where it happens to at least two of them. Or god forbid the injury bug bites us there, very curious to see how Vic fills those roles especially if Kendall doesn’t return.
  2. I couldn’t find a place in moody to just get some dang plain old nachos. I don’t need all the pretentious add-ons. Just give me some plain Jane stadium nachos and jalapeños and my day is made!!

Agreed.

Ha! The nachos! I agree. I don’t need nachos with flaming hot Cheetos crumbles and god only knows what else. Give me the paper basket of chips covered with gluey, orange Rico’s cheese and jalapeños and call it a day :beertoast: That being said, there really is something for everyone if you walk around.

I’ve got nothing critical to offer for the team. That was an early first game against a team that really could have given us a run for our money. They are a tournament team that returned three of their top scorers including their National Freshman of the Year. We crushed them and put everyone on notice that our preseason #3 ranking shouldn’t be ignored. Vic’s teams historically get better as the season progresses. He’s got more talent to work with this year. Considering how well we came out of the gate… watch out. :fire:
