BU hosts Texas in a white out game. To that end, all fans attending will get a white Lady Bears t-shirt. Both teams are coming off losses. Baylor dropped its first conference and home game to OU 56-51 while Texas was losing to A&M in Austin 68-54. That was the second loss in a row for the Horns who stand at 2-3 in Big 12 play while Baylor is at 5-1. Baylor will come into this game pretty mad. That OU game was one that they let slip away in the final minutes. Texas is trying to find their mojo which seems to have been lost during the semester break.

Baylor outrebounded OU 42-37. The Horns will have their work cut on staying with the Lady Bears on the boards. Against OU, the Horns gave up 21 rebounds to Courtney Paris while losing the battle of the boards 27-46. Against A&M, the Horns allowed La Toya Micheaux to grab 16 boards to lead A&M to a 41-33 edge in rebounding. Micheaux noted that she never had anyone “put a body” on her. A repeat of those two games on the boards for the Horns and they are likely to face a long drive back home.

In conference play, the Lady Bears are led in scoring by Danielle Wilson (# 11, 6-3 Jr. P) and Jessica Morrow (# 3, 6-0 Sr. G/F) at 14.5 ppg and 13.5 ppg, respectively. Melissa Jones (# 5, 5-10 Soph. G) is third at 9.3 ppg. Wilson and Morrow also lead the Lady Bears in FG % at 45.2% and 40.5% in conference play, based on at least 5 FGs made per game. Kelli Griffin (# 21, 5-8 Soph. G) leads the team in assists at 3.5 per game. Morrow is their top 3pt threat at 40% from BTA (12-30). Wilson is the top shot blocker in Big 12 games with 22 blocks. Wilson, second in conference play in rebounding at 10.7 rpg, probably can’t wait to see if she can grab 15-20 against the Horns. Besides Wilson, Griffin, and Morrow, Rachel Allison (# 14, 6-1 Sr. F) and Jhasmin Player (# 15, 5-10 G) are likely to start. Top reserves are Melissa Jones (# 5, 5-10 Soph. G) and Morghan Medlock (# 55, 6-2 Jr. F).

In Big 12 play, the Horns are led by Kat with 15.4 ppg. She is the only Horn in double figures as Brit is averaging 9.8 ppg in conference play. Kat also leads in rebounding in conference play, averaging 7.2 rpg. Even with a meager two assists against the Aggies, Carla leads the Horns with 6.8 assists a game, which ranks second in Big 12 games. Ashleigh is tops in FG% at 52.9% (18-34) while Kat is second at 45.3% (24-53). Brit is second on the team in FGA (19-52),hitting on 36.5% of them. Kat has attempted 42% of the 3s taken by the Horns in Big 12 games, connecting on 43.3% (13-30). Brit (4-14, 28.6%) and Erika (4-13, 30.8%) are the other main 3pt threats in conference play. Those three have taken 79% of the 3s attempted by Texas in conference play. As noted above, Kat is the leading rebounder in conference play. She is supported by Brit and Gayle at 4.2 rpg. Gayle and Lindsey are tied for the lead in blocks with 9. Kat is second with 5. She is also tied for second in steals at 8 with Lindsey and Carla. Ashleigh leads in steals with 12. Carla is far ahead with 34 assists in conference games. Second in that category is Ashleigh with 8. The Horns are getting to the FT line 20.6 times a conference game while opponents are taking 14.8 FTs. While opponents are at 67.6% from the FT line, the Horns are making a meager 62.1% in conference play, down from 72.7% for the season.

For the Horns, the puzzle is why the poor shooting happened against OU and A&M and why the defense collapsed at critical times. If the Horns can play as they have shown, in sync and with confidence, they have a shot at winning in Waco. Play as they did against OU and A&M, and they will be traveling back to Austin Sunday with a 2-4 Big 12 record and facing a trip to OSU.

There are some intriguing matchups in this game. Among them are the PGs. Carla is ranked first in A/TO ratio (1.79) and second in assists at 6.8. Griffin is fifth in A/TO ratio (1.40) and sixth in assists at 3.5. Player and Brit are similar in built and athletic ability and in importance in their teams success. Morrow and Kat are the top 3pt threats for their teams and show up seemingly in every offensive category although Kat appears to be a better rebounder. Post play is where Baylor appears to have a definite edge with Wilson and Allison over Lindsey and Earnie in both rebounding and scoring. Bench play, with Texas playing primarily nine players and Baylor seven, favors Texas. Jones for Baylor is an explosive scorer but so is Ashleigh and Ashleigh may be a better defender. Texas has a height advantage in their post bench players and all three post reserves have played extensively. The problem is that they have trouble scoring. This game, though, is one where physical play counts more than athletic ability. Kristen, Gayle, and Aubry can be physical.

Going by the stats, the Horns have a great chance to win this game. But the game is played on the court, not with stats. Can the Horns put together a smooth flowing game on both ends? If they can, they can get out of Waco with a win. If they continue to have hiccups on either or both ends, Baylor will take advantage of them and send the Horns home with a loss. Can our post players rebound as well as they can block shots? Or will Wilson be the third opposing post to get 15 plus rebounds? Lots of questions for Horns fans, mixed with a blend of hope and foreboding.

Texassports.com has their preview as of Friday as is Baylor’s.

Thanks BabHorn....again.

Our main focus has to be rebounding. Next focus is assists...isn't that our teams two main goals? We've been slacking on both.

And you're exactly right about needing a smooth game. If we can achieve the rebounding edge, i think we may have a good chance.

Forgot to include that local radio coverage will be on KVET FM 98.1 instead of the regular 1300AM due to the super bowl coverage on 1300AM. The game also will be on Fox Sports, cable 54 for Time Warner customers in the Austin area.

game day. come on horns! beat the bears!

just a few things i would like to see happen today....

somebody putting a body on wilson
raven in double digits
both kat and erika hitting a 3
crazy defensive pressure, leading to steals and fast break lay ups

Horns getting a little careless the last couple of times, still leading but need to find the basket on offense.

Horns still doing the really high passes. too bad our players can't do the Mr. Fantastic stretch to reach them. still the energy is much better and they are really hustling.

15-13 Horns. Erika lost two pts on a called foul before she shot. Horns can't afford to make those mistakes. Still, this kind of fight is great to see. Gives our team a change to win.

i'm liking the intensity...Font is all over the place on defense and rebounding. we need Carla back on the floor.
