Since losing both Nneka and the game at Waco on January 19, Texas has lost 3 of 4. Count in the Baylor game and Texas is 1-4 in their last five games to enter the rematch with Baylor at 4-6 in Big 12 play. Baylor sits on top the league standings at 10-0. Texas is in tied for fifth with WVU, KSU and Kansas, all with 4-6 records. Texas leads the series 57-30 but trails in Big 12 games, 17-23. Horns have not beaten Baylor since sweeping the series in the 2009-2010 season. Including the loss earlier this season, the Horns have lost nine straight to the Lady Bears. Baylor will be looking to push their longest winning streak over the Horns into double digits. Texas is looking to avoid their first 3 game losing streak of the season and their second loss at home this season.
Baylor has only one player in double figures but she’s a good one: Nina Davis (# 13, 5-11 Soph. F) is averaging 19.1 ppg. That puts her atop the league scorers. Three other playrs are close to hitting the 10 ppg line: Kadijiah Cave (# 55, 6-2 Soph. P) puts up 9.7 ppg; Imani Wright (# 20, 5-9 Soph. G) is at 9.2 ppg and Aussie Kristy Wallace (# 4, 5-11 Fr. G) adds 8.9 ppg. Davis has the best FG% among players that the eight players that have seen action in all ten Big 12 at 54.5%. Overall, Dekeiya Cohen (# 1, 6-2 Fr. F) who has played in 8 games, has the best FG% at 57.9%. Six players at 48% or better make Baylor the top shooting team in the league at 45.2%. Baylor is also the top 3pt shooting team by percentage at 36.5%. The following three players have taken 95 of the 96 3s taken by the Lady Bears: Wallace (16-41, 39.0%), Wright (9-29, 31.0%) and Alexis Prince (# 12, 6-1 RS Soph. G; 10-25, 40.0%). Davis is among the best in the league at getting to the FT line with 79 FT attempts in 10 games. The downside is that she is only making 57.0% (45 FTs made). Wright has the best FT% among players that have more than 5 FT attempts with a percentage of 81.3% on 13 of 16 FTs. Niya Johnson (# 2, 5-8 Jr. G) has the second most FTs made and attempted—22 of 30 (73.3%).
In addition to be the leading scorer, Davis is the top rebounder at 9.4 rpg and has the most steals at 16. Johnson adds 5.7 rpg while Sune Agbuke (# 22, 6-4 Sr. P) averages 5.6 ppg. Off the bench, Cave pulls down 4.6 rpg. Johnson is far and away the best assist maker in the league with an average of 9.0 apg. Five others average at least one assist per game. Agbuke has 23 blocks with Prince having a second best 9. Besides Davis’ team leading 16 steals, Wallace has 15, Wright and Johnson each have 13 and Agbuke pitches in with 10 steals.
Davis, Prince, Johnson and Agbuke have started all ten league games. Wright has joined them in the starting lineup seven times, including the past five games. Cave, Wallace, and Kristina Higgins (# 44, 6-5 Jr. P) have also played in all ten games with Wallace getting three starts. Seven players average in double digit minutes, led by Johnson’s 34.4 mpg and Davis’ 32.6 mpg.
Horns are led by Ariel’s 10.7 ppg. After missing the first four Big 12 games as part of the month she was out, she has averaged 17.3 ppg the last three games. She averaged 4.0 ppg the first three games she played in. Imani has the best FG% at 59.0% with Nekia second at 52.5%. Brady has the most FGs attempted (88) with Kelsey the most made (37). Brady (8-38, 21.1%), Brooke (8-33, 24.2%) and Krystle (4-24, 16.7%) have attempted 95 of the 128 3s Texas has put up. That trio has 20 of the 29 treys made. Krystle has hit 5-6 FTs (83.3%). Imani has the most FTs made and attempted, 18-23 (78.3%). Ariel is second in both at 15-19 (78.9%) but first in average of FTs made (2.5) and attempted (3.2) per game.
Kelsey (6.4 rpg) and Imani (5.5 rpg) lead the team in rebounding with Empress third at 4.8 rpg. Empress is also the leader in assists at 3.0 apg. Brady is second at 2.4 apg with Brooke at 2.0 apg. Brady tops the team in steals with 12 with Krystle second at 10 steals. Imani has 20 blocks with Kelsey second with 13.Kelsey is the only Horn to start all ten games. Nine players have starts in Big 12 games. Nine players have played in at least 8 games. Ten players average at least 11 minutes per with Brady’s 32.8 mpg topping the squad. With Empress out the last two games due to a shoulder injury, the starting line has been Ariel, Imani, Kelsey, Brady and Brooke. Texas will at least nine deep, perhaps ten deep. with four others also available.
Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas BU
Imani (6-7 Jr.C) Agbuke (6-4 Sr. P)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Davis (5-11 Soph. F)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Wright (5-9 Soph. G)
Brooke (5-4 Fr. G) Johnson (5-8 Jr. G)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G) Prince (6-1 RS Soph. G)
One of the most exciting matchups, when they do match up, will be Ariel vs Prince. The two quick and athletic guards are among the most exciting players to watch. The key matchup for Texas will be containing Davis, the leading scorer and rebounder. She is tied with OSU’s Martin in rebounding. Kelsey or Imani will draw that assignment initially with Ariel, Brianna, Brady and Empress also rotating on her. Cave has been an effective post coming in off the bench. Baylor will look to pressure the Texas guards to force TOs after the Horns have had 19, 25 and 19 TOs in their last three games. That will also keep the ball out of the Texas posts which will negate their height advantage. With Texas guards averaging 32% from the field and 22% from BTA in conference play, collapsing inside when the posts get the ball is also likely to be a Baylor strategy. This time around, Ariel has settled into her game whereas the first Texas-BU game was her second game back from injury and she was still not as effective as she is now playing. The ability of the Texas guards to make their open shots will be key in this game.

Both teams rely heavily on theirpost players for scoring. No guard for Baylor averages more than 9.2 ppg. No Texas guard connects on more than 36.5% other that Celina’s 44.4% from the field and she only averages 1.8 shots per game. Texas’ second and third leading scorers are their starting posts. Neither is big on shooting the 3. But the Lady Bears hit 36.5% while Texas is at 22.7%. Baylor averages 1.5 more FG attempts per game than does Texas. But Baylor is near the top on the offensive stats while Texas is having issues hitting shots. In the past five games, Texas has turned the ball over an average of 19 times per game. Baylor, third in the league in steals, will try to capitalize by forcing TOs. Texas and Baylor are one and two in rebounding margin. The Horns should be able to neutralize the Baylor post scoring with their own post scoring. Getting to the FT and making shots from the perimeter will be crucial for the Horns to pull off the upset on their home court. While Texas has ended up with the rebounding edge in 20 of 21 games, Baylor is as good as the Horns on the boards and will provide a tough test if the Horns are to win the battle of the boards.
