Texas vs. Baylor-Big 12 Tournament

Tolson is still in the game, in the ninth, for the Bears.

Clemens leads off, batting lefty, for the Horns.
He flies to center, for one away.

Boswell up and he bats left handed, with one down.
A liner to left and the left fielder, on the run, but it's off his glove, they score it a hit and an error, E-9.

Johnson bats righty, with one on and one down.
He is walked intentionally, to put two aboard.

Baker bats righty, with two on and one away.
A fly ball to center and the runners hold, two gone.

Hinojosa bats righty, with two on and two down.
He can still win it, with and outfield hit.
He walks to load the bases.

Barrera bats righty, with two outs, the bases loaded.

Coach out again and he leaves Tolson in.

Barrera back in, from the right side.
Augie calls an offensive time out, been a long time since this has happened and talks to Tres.
He responds with a game winning single to left.

All's well that ends well, I guess. Baylor I believe, left Tolson in, one batter to long.

Texas wins 4-3 and stays undefeated, need to collect my thoughts and come back, in a bit.

Wow what a clutch hit by Barrera!

I know they get Friday off and play on Sat.

NBH7 - do you think Augie pitches French again on Sat.?

After the first pitch to Barrera, which Barrera tried to put over the fence, Augie came out for an offensive consultation, and told him to cut that crap out and just hit a single to win the game, so Barrera did. Nothing to it.
The game had been too boring to that point, needed some drama.

Culbreth pitched a great game, but he was left in too long, he really should have been pulled, after the first runner got on. Then you had to go get him, when the second guy got on. I thought they just left him in to face the lefty, Toth. When he got on and then the righty hitter came up, he had to go.

He wasn't pulled, the three run homer ties it, but then he gets two straight hitters. That I thought, showed some real heart, not to crumble, and another pitcher wasn't used. Texas pulls it out, in the bottom of the ninth, thankfully.

So Texas is in the division championship, with two chances, if needed to win their division. You hope that Baylor and Tech go extra innings and use many pitchers tomorrow.

Tech would be the favorite, one would think, I don't think Baylor has much pitching left, Tech does. You never know though, I only know Texas will be waiting for the winner.

Mayes or Sawyer will start, I would go with Mayes, I think the kid has better stuff and can go more innings.

Weather is a worry, as rain is forcasted, for Friday through Sunday in Tulsa.

Texas has done what it needed to do so far, hope it continues. French and Culbreth did outstanding jobs, maybe other pitchers will be inspired by them. Who knows, maybe the bats will come through. We know we can hit Baylor pitching, Tech pitching, not so much. Go Bears! :hookem2::bevo:

No, Worster, French might pitch on Sunday, if we make it that far. He threw a ton of pitches in his start, I would think, he might could give you five innings on Sunday, no more than that.

We have asked a lot of the remaining staff, with all the injuries, extra inning games, and the added pressure that they faced because of the lack of offense. I would hate to see French get hurt, from asking, just too much from him.

I want to win, like every Longhorn supporter does, but not by risking injury to a player. I have not liked watching Hollingsworth pitch, when it was obvious, he was still not healthy. I'm glad they finally set him down, same with Clemens, if he can't go.

I was thinking along the same lines as NB. I don't think they would use him on Saturday with just two full days of rest. If they can get into the championship game on Sunday, though--and if he feels good--with a Regional tournament bid on the line who's going to want the ball more than Parker French?

Loved reading about Augie's patented visit to the plate in the crucial situation. Then the player responds for the MF win. YESH! :bounce1:

What a great thread. Fortunately, jepH the Tiger laid his little butt on my laptop and caused my scroll to stop working so when I restarted the browser it went to the 2nd page where I tried not to read, but saw something about walkoff. That helped when I navigated back to the 1st page and saw the nightmare 3-run bomb in the top of 9.

Thank God we didn't go 17 today...

Horns have a chance to reverse this - B 9th bases juiced - 2 outs - Barrera batting. Don't get greedy - we just need a base hit or a walk.
"Don't get greedy - . . ."

Spot on. I let out a big groan when Tres took that big home run swing and missed the 1st pitch. I could see a pop out to the infield coming. Augie spoke with Tres after the 1st pitch. I'm guessing he told him,

"Don't get greedy - we just need a base hit or a walk."

Great job setting the table. I may be naive, but the way we beat Baylor after blowing the lead could be a spark igniting moment. I was sure we'd hang our heads and succumb. Fighting back immediately and slapping the Bears back could be huge for morale and confidence. Not to mention our starting pitching is showing the team/coaches that if we just get to the postseason, they will give us a good shot to advance.

We certainly hold all the advantages we could ask for to steal this bad boy.

2 tries to get a win to make final.

Tech/Baylor will be further down the line of starting pitching by their 4th game, much less 5th in 4 days. The bats really need to come alive with that gift. We haven't even dipped into our own pen yet.

Finally, if we do get another win, we'll have the chance to ask French to seal the deal for a playoff berth.

Horns have done what they needed to do to make a final showdown a reality...let's see if they can shut the door.

With a numb season so far, I'd be pumped just to watch our ace in a final showdown with postseason atmosphere and implications. Not being greedy, just get us to Sunday Horns and we'll go from there. :bevo:

The truth is out, or is it la verdad, about the coaching moment prior to Barrera's walk-off hit. This morning's AAS states that Augie strolled out to Barrera and told him a "dirty joke in Spanish." So much for my theory, but whatever works in the moment, I suppose.
OK, just saw an Augie interview on LHN, and he also told Barrera to "just hit a single," so it was more than just the joke in Spanish.

The comment about a Spanish joke came out from AG in the post game conference on the radio. I thought that was a humorous deflection of the direct question. That answer (which was short) was intended to be a deflection by AG. Then a few minutes later the same question was asked of Tres himself. His spanish accent was strong, and he himself did not answer the same direct question. Normally in the past AG would answer the question normally, even if he was in a good mood with the win. This all implies to me that the conversation was not something they wanted to share with the public.

My guess, after listening to AG quite a bit in the past, is that the comment was really like a kick in the pants. "Focus on meeting the ball square or you will not play tomorrow."

I was glad when Baylor gave us that intentional walk. I know with a 1 out and a tie game it makes sense in a lot of ways, but it advanced us to some of our best RBI guys and left them with no leeway to avoid giving us a man on 3rd base.
