Texas (8-11, 1-7) goes to Ft. Worth to tangle with TCU (7-12, 0-8)
in a league game for the first time since 1996 when the SWC folded.
They have met twice since (Dec. 28m 2000 & Dec. 10, 2002) with
Texas winning both times. Horns bring an overall 31-0 record against
the Horned Frogs to this game. Texas will seek their second win in
league play this year against TCU while the Horned Frogs are looking
for their first Big 12 win. These are two of the youngest starting
fives around as both start three frosh, a sophomore, and a junior.
TCU has only one player averaging double figures in conference player:
Zahna Medley (# 14, 5-6 Fr. G) at 12.3 ppg. Kamy Cole (# 11, 5-9 Fr. G)
is second in scoring at 8.9 ppg. Natalie Ventress (# 24, 5-10 Soph. G)
and Veja Hamilton (# 3, 5-10 Fr. G/F) add 7.5 ppg and 7.1 ppg,
respectively. Medley (33-104, 31.7%), Cole (24-81, 29.6%) and Ventress
(18-77, 23.4%) are the players taking the most shots. They have taken
56% of all the FGs attempted by TCU. Latricia Lovings (# 21, 6-3 Jr. C)
is the most accurate shooter for the Horned Frogs at 46.0% (23-50).
Hamilton at 43.3% (26-60)is the other TCU player to hit over 40% off
FGs among players that have taken at least 10 shots. From BTA, TCU has
four players that have taken 163 of their 180 threes. Medley (21-71,
29.6%) is the main threat from BTA. Cole (11-45, 24.4%), Ventress (9-29,
31.0%) and Donielle Breaux (# 33, 5-10 Soph. G; 5-18, 27.8%) make up
the rest of the quartet. A trio of players are perfect from the FT line
but have only attempted 2 FTs each. Medley is 11-20 for 55.0% from the
charity line. Ventress is the most accurate FT shooter for TCU at 78.9%
(15-19) although Lovings was at 80% before an 0-4 outing in the OU game
dropped her to 57.1%.
Lovings is the top rebounder (10.0 rpg) and shot blocker (27 blocks)
for the Horned Frogs. Ashley Colbert (# 44, 6-3 Soph. C) has 3 blocks
to rank second on the team. Hamilton (4.6 rpg) and Ventress (4.1 rpg)
provided help for Lovings on the boards. Medley, with 35 assists, and
Cole, with 10, lead the team in assists.
TCU has 12 players on their roster. Eight have played in all of the
league games so far. Colbert has played in seven and started in two
games. Chelsea Prince (# 4, 5-11 F) has played in four games. Caitlin
Diaz (# 32, 6-1 Fr. F) and Meagan Henson (# 5, 5-0 Jr. G) have gotten
into three games. Starters in the last game against OU were Medley,
Cole, Ventress, Lovingsa and Hamilton. Coming in off the bench were
Breaux, Delisa Gross (# 22, 6-1 Sr. F), Colbert, Whitney Williams
(# 2, 5-7 Sr. G), Diaz and Henson. Breaux is a transfer from Kansas
while Williams transferred in from Iowa State. Medley (33.4 mpg) and
Lovings (31.6 mpg) are the only TCU players that average over 30 mpg.
Six others average between 29 and 11 mpg.
Horns are led by three players in double figures: Chassidy (13.0 ppg),
Nneka (12.9 ppg) and Imani (10.0 ppg). Four players have 72% of the
team’s FGs made and 66% of the FGs attempted: Chassidy (30-97, 34.5%),
Nneka (35-77, 45.5%), Imani (35-75, 46.7%) and Empress (24-68, 35.3%).
Ashley, whose availability is questionable, leads the Horns in 3pt FG%
at 41.7% (10/24). Horns that have taken at least 10 3s include Chassidy
(11-43, 25.6%), Gigi (3-14, 21.4%) and Brady (2-10, 20.0%). Not
surprisingly, the team ranks tenth in conference games with a 3pt FG%
of 24.3%. Aside from Celina, who has hit both FTs she has attempted,
Brady leads the team in FT% at 81.8% (9-11). Nneka tops the team in
FTs made (20) and attempted (29) for 69.0%. Chassidy (7-10, 70.0%)
and Ashley (4-5, 80.0%) are the others making at least 70% of their
FTs.
Imani and Nneka are one-two in rebounding with averages of 8.5 and8.0 rpg respectively. Chassidy ranks third at 6.3 rpg. Empress has 22assists, Celina 19 and Chassidy and Nneka each has nine. Imani’s 14
blocks is tops on the team while Chassidy is second with five. Six
players have between 7 and 11 steals with Celina topping the team and
Chassidy in second with 10.
Texas has 12 players that have played in at least one league game. Two,
Ashley and Anne Marie, whose availability for the TCU game is unknown.
At least, to fans.
Imani and Empress have started every league game
while Brady and Celina have played in all 8 league games. Chassidy has
started all six games she has been available for while Nneka has
started seven of seven league games she has played in. Chassidy, Nneka,
Imani, Empress and Celina started the game against KSU. Chassidy
(35.0 mpg), Empress (33.9 mpg) and Nneka (32.3 mpg) all average over
30 mpg. Imani and Ashley average in the mid 20s. Nadia, Gigi, Sara,
Kayla and Brady all average in the teens.
Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas TCU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Hamilton (5-10 Fr.G/F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Lovings (6-3 Jr. C)Horn
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Medley (5-7 Fr. G)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Ventress (5-10 Soph. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Cole (5-9 Fr. G) [/pre]
Lovings is an outstanding defender but not as dominating on the
offensive end. She is TCU’s most accurate shooter but averages only a
bit over 6 shots per game. Horns can expect her to block some shots.
Medley is the primary shooter for TCU and Empress will likely start
off on her. Hamilton had success against OU taking the mid range jumper
after penetrating. Whoever is guarding her will need to stay with her
and challenge that shot. Imani especially should have success inside if
she can establish position deep in the paint, get the ball high and just
turn and shoot. Unless TCU plays Lovings and Colbert together, Nneka
should have a height advantage inside. TCU primarily plays a 2-3 zone.
Crisp passes should be able to get open shots for our guards,
especially if the posts are able to pass the ball back out when it
comes in to them.

This a game between two teams struggling to score. They rank near the
bottom in scoring, FG% and 3pt FG%. TCU does play solid D, ranking 3rd
in 3pt FG defense, 4th in steals and 4th in blocks. Texas has an obvious
edge in offensive rebounding grabbing 16+ to rank first in the league
in that category. Texas is second in rebounding margin while TCU is
tenth. TCU, with Lovings as the anchor, presents a big barrier to
shooters that take a shot from the paint, ranking 4th in the league in
blocks. Texas is 5th as Imani is the main shotblocker for the Horns.
TCU likes the three. 39% of their shots in Big 12 games have come from
BTA. In contrast, 76% of Texas’ FG attempts are from inside the arc.
The teams are similar in that both TCU and Texas have lost four games
by eight points or less. TCU will have difficulty with handling the
Horns frontline of Imani and Nneka. The main focus of Texas will be to
shut down TCU’s 3pt shooting while TCU will depend on Lovings and her
post mates to keep the Texas posts from dominating and force the Texas
guards to win the game. Offensive rebounding will be key for Texas to
allow second chance points while TCU will need to limit the Texas
offense to one shot and done to give themselves an opportunity to run.
Depth should not be an issue for either team unless foul trouble
becomes an issue. Texas should have 10 players available along with
one probable. TCU uses a base rotation of nine players but has three
others they could use.
