Texas v UCLA series

Overrated or not, it's still big to sweep UCLA. The past couple of seasons, this team seemed to find a way to lose no matter the caliber of the opposition. There were a couple of times this weekend when things started to come apart, but they fought through it and found a way to win instead of the other way around. The next 4 games will be tough--it's good to be 6 games over .500 going into this stretch.

While I really think Cantu is a fine young man and a decent catcher, I really expected a lot more from his bat. With that said, I sure liked what I saw from his replacement on Sunday.

I've been saying this for a week now. I just can't comprehend why McCann sits the first two games of this series, nor why Pearce felt the need to sub Cantu in when McCann was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the game. The kid is hitting .500 in 20 at-bats, and he could go 0-20 in his next 20 at-bats and still be ahead of Cantu by .100 points. A slugging % of .700 means he's damn near averaging a single every at-bat.

I really do like Cantu, he's been solid for us in the past, but watching him at the plate you can tell he's not seeing the ball at all. Hamilton at short is struggling too, but his speed in the field shows. The kid has made some spectacular plays at short and will get us outs we probably shouldn't have gotten, but he's a hole in the lineup too. However, unlike Cantu, we haven't seen anyone who can field his position the way he does.

It will be interesting to see what happens when conference play starts.

Cantu has issues at the plate. Until he fixes things McCann should start. One thing about Cantu..He should be bombing the ball as big as he is. Not sure what the problem is. I guess Augie didn't know either, and the new guys haven't solved the mystery either.

Cantu doesn't seem to know how to get the barrel of his bat at the right angle. He also pulls away from the ball instead of driving through it. I don't know if it's fixable this late in his college career or not, but I have seen significant improvement from some of the other players.

I honestly wonder if it's a vision thing like Kasey had. Even when Cantu smokes the ball you can see a look of almost surprise, like he's guessed correctly.

I don't get the Cantu thing, either. DP has not been shy about putting Freshmen in other spots, replacing upperclassmen, why is he still trying to salvage Cantu? McCann is as good or better at every aspect of the game than Cantu, I saw that the first dang weekend of the season. And then, of course, his (Cantu's) parents were sitting 2 rows in front of me when I said it out loud.
