Texas - UTSA GAME THREAD

Sure they did, namely the onside kick, Worthy dropped touchdown, Card missing wide ope Worthy in the end zone, officials with their heads up their asses. I think their errors probably had more overall impact.

I hear ya. Hard to know, really.

To me, and a couple of the other Horn Fans posters who came to my abode to watch the game, Texas did what it has not done in recent years. They experienced in game adversity and didn't curl up. They won.

While there were very obvious things that need to be corrected, I am satisfied with this game that many of us classified as a "trap game". I was surprised by our need to throw down field several times knowing Card really has no accuracy on longer passes. I'm guessing Sark really didn't care of any connected as it kept the defense from cheating and crowding the line. Card did what Card does completing 55% of the passes and having a couple good runs. He managed the game as good as he could have. I don't think we win OU with HC as the QB though so here's to Ewers coming back healthy by then.

I was very happy that Bijan finally had what I would consider a strong breakout game this year getting 183 yards and 3 TD's averaging 9.2 ypc. I'm also happy to see RoJo have a more significant impact on the game getting 81 yards on the ground.

I thought the crowd sounded just like this board. Didn't sound like they were very into the game at all until the 3rd quarter.

Anyway, I'll take the W and move on.

For those pantywastes complaining about the complaining during the game....well, that's what happens on message boards so :tap:.

Yes, they won by 21, but UTSA gets a major assist for numerous unforced errors which largely made the difference. A couple of dropped deep passes and/or under throw to a wide open receiver. Dropped touchdown, crucial offside/procedure penalties (first drive, fourth and goal from the three, do you think the defense would have held them there to a fg without the procedure penalty because I don’t); offside on fourth and four. The dropped fourth down pass in the fourth which would have been a first down at least and may have gone for much more. Arguable as to whether the pick six was forced or unforced error. UTSA makes most of those plays or doesn’t have the penalties and the game is much different.

Don’t get me wrong, UTSA is a solid football team with a solid head coach, but this was not a dominating 21 point win. Nevertheless, survive and move to the next game.

yep. That's football. UTSA receiver misses an easy catch on slant on 4th and 1. However, I believe very strongly that the sack of their quarterback on that series should not have been a roughing the passer/targeting for a first down, and then the missed slant pass never happens. I can't remember the Texas miscues, but in addition to them I do think that a couple of deep balls with a better throw (perhaps Ewers) go for Texas touchdowns. And how much did a high ankle sprain impact those throws. Just saying.

Any win will be an achievement going forward with the new "free agency" portal backed up with NIL money. College football's lopsided teams are a thing of the past, with a few current exceptions. However, in time, parity will be universal.

Can someone explain to me why the book on Card is written after 3 starts? Seriously.

He’s thrown about 6-7 deep balls this year with 3 being on target but good defense. The first throw of the game traveled between 55-60 yards in the air. Sometimes it just takes a bit more time. As someone else mentioned, who knows how much he practiced this week.

I’d also ask you this. How fast did he look last night? How fast did he look last year? If you think he looked significantly faster, do you think he’s really that much faster or is it something else?

I was there last night. I thought the crowd did a great job considering the opponent. Youre not gonna get Bama noise every week from anybody. This was their Alabama game and they played over their heads just like we did last week. We withstood their initial surge and took care of business thereafter 34-3. I thought the final score would be closer. Last year this game would have been an L. I am gruntled.

Because he's the same QB as last year. Slow to make decisions, good with short to mid range passes with the exception of occasionally hitting shoelaces and completely inaccurate on long passes. Those aren't negative opinions they are verifiable facts.

He's not a bad QB and he's exactly the kind of depth we have desperately needed at this position for years. He's just not that #1 guy who will gut out a win for you in a big game...at least not yet anyway.

I like Galindo. He has become as big a Texas homer while still shooting straight when they lose as there is.

He did make the mistake of saying "Bijan Johnson" on the long TD run, but who cares? He corrected it right away.

I think after his successful performance last week playing through pain against a hard-hitting bama team Card is playing with a little more grit and moxie, hence his determination to run harder and faster. I have contended for his whole college career he is soft mentally. I think he is going to play with a little more spit and vinegar and Sark needs to to trust him and not be so conservative.

Texas put pressure on the QB as the game wore on. Note the lucky fumble recovery by UTSA after the QB was hit. Regardless of the sack hit by Overshown, their QB likely was going to be wore down by end of game.

Won the second half 24-3. Pretty good.

We were having some angst in the first half but none of us ever thought the game was in question.

Galindo - can’t stand him

passing game - UTSA completed what felt like 20 slants and I don’t know if we threw one.

one was dropped that would’ve had them inside the 10 at first and goal.

Don’t know why we struggled at times to continue drives with short passing game unless it’s not Sark’s style. Card takes chances deep to no avail.

it was frustrating until the pick 6.
Gotta fix the D bc Tech will prob do the same as UTSA passing.

Hope Ewers is back soon.

We do need to tighten our Defense, make sure tackles, and aggressively defend slants.
Good news is that ttu’s qb throws some wildly inaccurate passes. At least he did againste NC state last night. He had one returned for a td. And many others way off the mark. Also he is not as quick as either Young or Harris. Our d rush will be in his grill all night.

I’d argue he’s not the same as last year. See the run versus Bama last week. He set the one potential tackler up with a ball fake. Then last night his long run was definitive and relatively quick.

I do think it’s mental. If he can overcome some of his issues, there’s a chance he can overcome others. His story is not fully told.

During the broadcast they spent time extolling the play of Cristian Jones. I hadn't noticed watching the game, but he was looking great. Not exactly Mike Williams...but pretty good. The light has come on since 2021.

You remember Manny Diaz? How about Orlando?
Yes, he was terrible here and thanks for the flashback but last years Texas D made Manny look like Nick Saban. This year we are sitting at 53 in total d which as I keep stating that if we were even that good last year we win a lot of those 7 losses. I hate Texas having such a bad D but having been a Texas fan for 60 years its just irritating that we field such a bad d. Mike Campbell was awesome in the 70's. Muschamp was lights out. Just watch the 2008-2010 defense. You think that BS about players not putting out effort would have worked under him or saban or venables?

Gave it a rewatch and a few things from the tape:
1) Texas was playing soft zone initially and that’s why it was 4 yards and a cloud of dust with the dink and dunk. We adjusted with tight man coverage because UTsA was willing to take it every time. You saw it on Jameson slant play. Really good play there
2) Watts got picked on. He was in position and is a physical player but just needs to finish some plays. Same last week
3) Anthony Cook is a hammer at safety. Great tackler and laid the wood multiple times.
4) Their QB is a baller. Ugly release but it gets it done. There were 3 times I counted where we get a strip sack or sack if he isn’t a lefty. Our line actually got solid pressure but we ran a bit too far up field. Adjusted well in second half and the licks took a toll
5) Free DMO. What a joke. Two weeks in a row, ghost targeting calls.
6) The Oline is much better pass blocking than run blocking. At least initially, and it makes a difference if it’s Quinn and there’s more legit downfield threat. They weighed on them late, which is what we will need to finish some games this year.
7) RoJo is my favorite player. Leader of the team and what a story for him. He willed us to a tie in first half. He’s the bulldozer that clears the road and Bijan comes in with the cement. Team really responded to his effort.
8) Sweat is really impressive and is getting better every week.
9) The Hudson question is a real thing on this board, but he clearly to me can throw the deep crosses and curls well so why not throw them more?? Those concepts are there with play action too. Great run by him too. Big play. Got to get the deep balls on the receiver’s line. Much respect for the guy and need him to keep improving. Stop throwing swing passes on 3rd 15 or 4 yard stops on 3rd 6… Greg Davis didn’t sneak into the booth or leave a play sheet behind that I know of, so let’s not act like it.
10) Worthy needs more touches.
11) Wide receiver and tight end blocking is so much improved this year. Worthy sucked at blocking last year and he’s much improved and Whittington is like a dog on a bone on multiple plays. JT Sanders also a great blocker. Good energy there.
12) Good job by the team weathering the storm. There was no pouting by the guys or anything. I think they knew the position they were in and it looked like our feet were in concrete and just gritting our teeth for bit and could feel the weight of ‘don’t you dare lose this game or else…’
13) LB position is the biggest turn around this year. Ford is on a mission. Oline not far behind. Free DMO.

I am looking forward to seeing what our D does in Lubbock. I think we as fans can probably learn a lot from their performance next week.

I think Your Wrong made a salient observation. First man to the ball still misses a lot of tackles, which is frustrating, but the second wave of guys gets there to finish the job a hell of a lot faster than last year.
Totally agree on improvement from last year. You credit PK. I believe its more Gary Patterson. I dont really care who improved it but last year was far below whats acceptable for Texas.

Yeah. I found a pic of an OLine coach at an unnamed university with the predominate color of crimson red showing a player a "blocking" technique.

Now thats funny. I believe thats what OU teaches. Not sure how bedenbaugh has gotten away with that for so long.

Yeah and how young he is to the position was interesting
I assume you are referring to Jones. If so, 3 systems, 3 coaches later. Missed a Covid spring/summer. Transitioned from right to left and back to right. He’s shown an ability to dominate on any given play. You can see his team like attitude always helping Bijan up. He’s a large dude. His best is probably yet to come. People want to focus on his struggles and not his good efforts against the Baylor’s, KStates and WVUs of the world.

Yes. Connor at left guard seems to be the weak link now. The ones who commit the most offsides are usually the same ones struggling (I.e., trying to hard).
