The Arkansas Little Rock (UALR) Trojans (2-3) will face a team from the Big 12 for the second time in less than a week. They dropped a 62-52 road game vs Oklahoma on December 02. On Sunday, December 06, they will host #6/6 Texas. This will be the second game played between the Trojans and the Longhorns. On December 04, 2013, Texas defeated the Trojans 60-26 in Austin.
Kelsey (12 pts., 3 rebs), Empress (4 pts, 11 rebs), Brady (3 pts, 4 assists), Brianna (4 pts, 2 rebs), Imani (3 pts, 9 rebs) and Celina (5 assists, 4 rebs) played in that game for the Horns. For UALR, players that saw action in that game were: Shanity James (5 rebs, 2 steals), Kaitlyn Pratt , Keanna Keys (1 pt., 1 reb, 1 assist) and Shardé Collins (2 rebs). Kelsey, Empress, Brady, James and Pratt were starters in that game.
Shanity James (# 20, 5-11 Sr. F) is the leading scorer for UALR, averaging 18.8 ppg. Shardé Collins (# 13, 5-9 Jr. G) and Alexis Dawn (# 10, 5-4 Sr. G) are second and third in scoring at 7.8 and 7.6 ppg, respectively. James has taken 22 more shots than anyone else on the team with 74 attempts. Her 52.7 FG% tops the team. Dawn is second in FG attempts with 52 but is only hitting 21.2% from the field. Kaitlyn Pratt (# 40, 6-1 Jr. F) at 48.3% and Keanna Keys (# 33, 6-1 Jr. F) at 43.5% join James in hitting at least 40% from the field. Three players have attempted double digits treys, led by Dawn’s 9-40 (22.5%). Collins (8-15, 53.3%) is the most accurate from BTA. Monique Townson (# 2, 5-6 Soph. G) is another 3pt. threat at 41.7$ (5-12). Kira Shepard (# 4, 5-7 Fr. G) provides UALR with another 3pt threat, hitting 38.1% on 3 of 8. The Trojans don’t get to the FT line much (13 FT attempts a game) and don’t do well when they get there, making 60.0% of their FTs. James leads UALR with 15 FTs made and 28 attempts (53.6%). Dawn (7-10, 70.0%) and Pratt (5-10, 50.0%) are the only other Trojans to reach double digit FT attempts.
James is the top rebounder (7.6 rpg) with Pratt (6.0 rpg) and Keys (4.2 rpg) providing support on the boards. Townson (4.4 apg) and Dawn (2.4 apg) do the best job of setting up their teammates. Dawn is tops with 9 steals. James, Townson and Shepard all have six steals each. The Trojans are not a big shot blocking team with only five blocks in their first five games. James has two blocks to lead in that category.
James, Dawn and Townson have started all five games. Collins , Pratt and Shepard each have two starts. Keys has four starts on her résumé. Starters for the game vs OU were James, Dawn, Townson, Collins and Keys. James (35.8 mpg), Townson (35.2 mpg) and Dawn (30.8 mpg) all average over 30 mpg. Collins (23.4 mpg), Pratt (23.6 mpg), Shepard (22.2 mpg) and Keys (19.9 mpg) make up the main seven player rotation used by UALR. The Trojans have four others that have seen action in earlier games.
The Longhorns will have three players in double figures and a fourth pushing to join that group: Imani (14.2 ppg), Brooke (11.3 ppg), Brianna (10.2 ppg) and LaShann (9.7 ppg). The Horns have four players hitting over 50% of their shots. Brianna (26-43, 60.5%) just nips Imani (32-53, 60.4%) for the best percentage. Kelsey (16-30, 53.3%) and Sara (8-15, 53.33) give the posts three of the top four spots in FG%. Since Brianna plays inside so much, you could say that the posts actually have the top four spots. LaShann (19-58, 32.8%) tops the team in FG attempts. It is a balanced squad in shooting with a range of FG attempts from 58 to 27 among the top seven players in the rotation to this point. Brooke is the top 3pt threat for the Horns, hitting 10-26 (38.5%). Brianna has the top 3pt % at 75.0% (3-4). Celina (7-14, 50.0%) provides another 3pt threat for opponents to guard against. The Horns have attempted 142 FTs in six games, hitting a meager 63.4% of them. Four players are hitting over 70%, with Imani (207-27, 74.1%) and Brooke (10-14, 71.4%) the only ones among that group to reach double digit FT attempts. LaShann leads the team with 29 FT attempts.
Imani just misses averaging a double double with 9.2 rpg. Kelsey (5.3 rpg) and LaShann (5.0 rpg) rank second and third in rebounding. Three Horns have double digit assists: Celina and Empress with 21 each and Brooke with 18. Imani (12) and Kelsey (6) are the leading shot blockers for the Horns. LaShann has 12 steals with Imani second with 10. Brooke will join them in double digit steals with her next one.
Six players have started a game for Texas. Imani, Brooke and Celina have started all six games. Brianna has four, Kelsey three and Empress five. Brooke is averaging a team high 31.0 mpg. Next are Imani and Celina at 25.3 mpg. Nine of the players average double digit mpg. Nine have seen action in all six games with Sara and Brady getting into five games. Olamida has seen action in three games.

Texas is going to have a bi-i-g size advantage regardless of whether Imani, Kelsey or Sara are on the floor. If Texas uses two of the three at the same time, as they have on occasion, it will difficult for UALR to match up or defend. OU rode 6-3 Kaylon Willams 9-16 shooting to their 10 pt win. Horns first option is going to be to look inside, especially with the way Imani has been playing. Look for UALR to send up a barrage of 3pters to counter Texas’ height. Our guards will need to guard the 3pt line. UALR will apply pressure throughout the game. The experience gained from playing Miss. State will help Texas here. One has to wonder if Texas will look for the 3pter as well as the Trojans will likely pack it inside to deny our posts.

The game should not be close. UALR likes to pressure a lot, similar to Miss. State. They will trap as well. But they will also have to contend with the Horns’ pressure. I like our team’s chances of getting into a fast break game. It should be a chance for them to continue to work on their half court game.
