Texas @ Texas Tech

Let's be real. Not saying Texas Tech is a bad team, or that they do not have a couple of nice players (Bailey Maupin). I am saying Texas has no business losing to Texas Tech with or without Rori. But that was true last year and the year before that. Beating Texas one out of two games was a highlight for Texas Tech last year when they, once again, finished near the bottom of the conference standings and failed to make the NCAA tournament. By playing a very weak non-conference schedule, Tech made the WNIT.

What do we see as the keys to the game? What do we want to see?

Key to winning, imo: BALL SECURITY. Texas Tech scores 23.8 of its 73.6 points a game off the 21.7 turnovers a game committed by its opponents average. These numbers are similar to those of Baylor who scores 25.8 points per game off 24.2 opponent turnovers. On Sunday, Baylor scored 30 points off Texas’ 23 turnovers!

After that, just play Texas ball. Offensively, I trust the team to put up points. Texas can score. The team put up 79 points against Baylor. For the year, Baylor gives up 55.3 a game. Tech gives up a similar number, 56.3, but against a much weaker schedule. Per Massey, Tech SOS is currently 165 vs 14 for Baylor. The Horns may look a little worse against a zone, but they still find ways to score.

After winning, things I'd like to see:

1. Fewer minutes played by Shay and Shaylee. Each played 40 minutes against Baylor. People have talked about the need for a back-up "true point guard". Heck, Texas needs another guard, period! The team is playing with 2 true guards. Madison is leading the offense, but she is limited in her ability to guard smaller guards. I'm impressed with how well she does. But we need Jak to step up there. Or, if Dee and/or Amo start playing better, Amina can do a pretty good job defending on the perimeter. If she plays with 2 other inside players, that may limit her offensive opportunities. But she does not seem to be one to complain about her role. Just goes out and makes herself indispensable.

2. Good minutes from Jak, AMO, and Dee. I hope both AMO and the team are working on getting AMO reintegrated into the offense. AMO was front and center of a couple of possessions that collapsed into utter confusion Sunday. AMO's frustration was very evident. And she did not play much after that. We need the confident, smiling, fist-pumping AMO going for the and one!

3. A winning margin that allows Vic to give some minutes to Gisella. If she can become a contributor as the season goes on, it could make a huge difference.

Thoughts?

I noted that Chevalier lost some weight and appears to be the starting pg now. Numbers aren't good, but she at least appears capable of running the team. This game will be good in Madi's development, as she will now get to experience a hostile crowd (albeit, probably not a large crowd). Sure wish Taylor would be back, but who really knows. These "day to day" reports are a joke and I wish they'd stop giving them. We should have a distinct height advantage in this game. Of the players who have played recently, I do not see a true post player. Only one starter is above 6 ft, and she is 6-3. They do have some taller players but it doesn't appear they get minutes. They lost to Tulsa and Oregon St., which were not good losses. We need to feed the ball down low and let Hadi go to town on her old team.

Vic's media availability. Jones is still unavailable and the injuries are obviously frustrating him. He also has some interesting comments about officiating.

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Vic make such direct comments about officiating. I’m guessing Texas has filed formal complaints.

The news/no news about Jones is discouraging. But I was heartened by his comments about Maul.

I should have mentioned defense more in keys to the game. The 79 points scored by Texas on Sunday should win most games. Good comments by Vic about the team having to focus more on percentage field goal defense because current personnel is not built to play the turn’em over style he prefers.

Tech will play out of their minds and the refs will be looking for any excuse to hand them the game. I hope our Horns come out of the gate loaded.

Don't recall that Hadi has ever been an offensive force with the ball. Great rebounder but don't know about her offense. With Taylor out I don't know where our low post game will come from. Maybe Gaston if she doesn't get into foul trouble. Not sure when Moore can be relied on.
Game 2 of the no Rori season. Going to be an interesting game.

It's not complicated. Tech is going to play a sagging zone and force Texas to make perimeter jump shots just like they always do. Again, without Rori and Jones every game is a potential lose with this team.

Every game is a potential win. But I guess we differ on that little nugget :beertoast:

I can’t take these announcers.

“It is back and forth. Texas on a 7-0 run”

Isn’t that that opposite of back and forth???

And UT audio link not working

Ashley G’s mom is visiting. Must be planning another transfer.

Announcers - the male just can’t disguise his TT bias.

We need Maul so glad she is getting some time and Vic says she is working “really hard”.

The announcers were talking about other B12 games tonight and the female announcer looked right into the camera and concluded with this delusional nugget:

“And then there are surprise teams like Tech who can do a lot of damage this season”

:lmao:

Brandi Poole - ex coach at ..... Texas Tech.

Amina made some bad plays at the start of the game, and looks like she’s in the dog house for the rest of this game.

Easily Amo’s best game of the season. Guessing that’s why Amina is getting almost no mins tonight? One place we don’t have depth problems is at the four position.

Good job overall... I'll take a 30 pt Big 12 win on the road any day even if we did look sloppy at certain points. Man, it's nice to see A-Mo getting her game back! Good job by her and Gaston.

We turned it over 18 times. We had 23 against Baylor. That is a direct result of losing Rori for sure but needs to stop. However, 17-20 at the line is a sight for sore eyes.

We looked good but it’s hard to get a real feel because Tech really sucks this year.

Vic sounding a little emotional in the post-game radio interview (or maybe he was losing his voice). A few nuggets:
Rori and Taylor were not there tonight.
Hopes to get Taylor back on Saturday!

Amo interviewed too. Said she told Vic to trust her and she would produce. Well, that's an understatement.
