Texas Tech - Game 2 — we don’t match up well down low

The best players are still Shaka's players. Beard did a good job filling the roster from nothing, but he has to improve the athletic level of the team in the next few years to make them competitive for a Big12 title.
Unless we win it next year then hopefully an SEC title.

Call me disappointed and underwhelmed. I expected a step up this season, with Beard. With one quality win, Kansas at home, we haven’t seen the improvement yet. Certainly not up to expectations.

I may be the Lone Ranger here but I expected more.

I expected more with all the praise of the transfers coming in.
But it does take time for a bunch of guys used to being the big dog to figure out how to share and play like a team.
Mitchell being gone for the last two games and maybe more doesn't help.
I think Beard's D is better than Shaka's and that's what Smart was known for.
We have 19 wins and hopefully will end up with at least 20.
Most are showing a decent seed in the dance and with just one win there we are better than years past.
Not bad for the first year.

Yeah this is where I find myself. If Carr and Disu were both a shadow of how good they were last season, we'd be right up there. But Disu must still be hurt and Carr... well... I don't know.

We had 2 first round draft players last year, along with Sims who had become a monster inside. I've seen much better schematics, but to think we have the same level of talent is just silly.

I think Tennessee, Iowa st, and KU were all quality wins. Of course losing at home to ttu was a bitter disappointment.
Beating Baylor will be very difficult. I don’t think we match up well at all with them. Beating KU at their place will be a huge challenge.
We should beat wvu and tcu to get to 21 wins.

If the ball bounces our way we may get a win against bu or KU. That would be icing on the cake.

In the end, we lost the game at the FT line.

We were outscored by 7 in FT’s, TTU WAS 20 of 29 and had 20 PFs.

We were 13 of 17 with 21 PFs.

Based on PFs by each team, total FTs should have be closer.
It's possible to have a big free throw disparity despite nearly even numbers of fouls.

The first 6 fouls a team commits in each half are non-shooting fouls unless you foul somebody in the act of shooting.

In the first half of this game, of the first 6 fouls that UT committed, 4 were in the act of shooting, and all on missed shots, resulting in 8 free throws for Tech.

Meanwhile, of the first 6 fouls that Tech committed, only 1 was in the act of shooting. And on that play, the UT shooter hit the shot despite being fouled, so he got only 1 free throw out of it.

So just on those first 6 fouls by each team in the first half, Tech had an 8-1 free throw advantage. That alone accounts for 7 of the 12 free throw disparity in the game.

I'm too lazy to review the rest of the play-by-play to see what caused the rest of the difference, but, as happened in this game, the number of free throws by each team can vary widely despite equivalent numbers of fouls.

With Beard, we’ve gotta wait and see how he does in the tourneys with this bunch. He could be a “Tournament Tom” Penders sort of guy here who does well enough in the regular season, but really cranks it up into high gear for tournaments and over-performs in the Big Dance (I hope so).

Shaka won the conference tournament here last year, so that bar is set very high by the previous regime. Beard may exceed Shaka’s exploits in the Big Dance. (according to some, that particular bar is not set too terribly high).

Shaka coached here six years and won the big 12 once and no ncaa tournament games at all.
To me, that’s a pretty low bar. Especially with the NBA talent Shaka had here.
Also, Shaka didn’t win the B12 until his 6th year.
As far as Beard in the tournament his record speaks for itself. He’s taken teams further than Tom: to the Final Four, elite 8, sweet sixteen, etc.
Beard has earned my respect and confidence that, given time to put his teams together, he will have success here similar to what he’s historically had.

Yeah. The bar got lower and lower from like 2009 onward. Going to the Elite 8 with the Augustin/Abrams team and then "well maybe we can get to the Sweet 16" turned into "well maybe we can make the tournament" pretty quickly.
