Texas-TCU, Part Deux

Hernandez leads off the top of the sixth with an opposite-field single to right. Finally, Texas puts the lead-off hitter on base! Top of the UT order up.

Torres POPS UP a bunt. TCU's first baseman makes the play for easy out No.1. Ugh.

Tucker falls behind, 0-2, but watches three balls outside to work the count full. The next pitch is also a ball, but Tucker waves at it futilely for out No.2. Belt up.

Belt also goes down swinging, his third K of the day. That gives him the "Sheet."

What a waste.

To the bottom of the 6th ...

Hmmm, guys just don't seem to have it with the bats today. Going to have to will themselves to get some hits. Work the count. Get some fouls. And get some hits!

First two batters for TCU go down quickly--grounder to short and K swinging--but then Carpenter sends one over the right-field wall to up TCU's advantage to 3-0.

Vern also goes yard, but it hooks foul. He works the count full before skying one to left-center to end the inning.

The Horned Frogs now lead by three. To the top of the 7th ...

We've now given up 5 HRs in this series.

Keyes rips an opposite-field double to right to start off the seventh for Texas in style. Loy up.

Loy grounds weakly to short. One gone.

Clark drills a 2-2 pitch back up the middle for an RBI single. Keyes scores from second. Man on first, one out. Rupp up.

Rupp flies out to right on the first pitch. Two away. Rowe up.

Rowe skies one foul that the rightfielder catches for out No.3.

Texas finally plates a run, but the 'Horns still trail by two, 3-1.

Horny Toads go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th. Green is getting hit hard, but he's getting ahead of hitters and letting his defense do the work.

To the top of the 8th, down a pair ...

Moldy in to pinch hit for Hernandez. He takes first after Gerrish beans him on the shoulder. Maitland in to pinch run for Moldenhauer.

Conference on the mound. Gerrish, who struggled with his control and fell behind batters in the 6th and just plunked a batter to start the 7th, has been chased.

This is three straight innings UT has put the leadoff hitter on base. Hopefully, we can get more than one this time. Top of the order (Torres, Tucker and Belt) is up.

Torres chops one to the mound and nearly grounds into a double play. He's safe at first, fortunately. One on, one out.

Tucker drills one that should've gotten through the hole, but the shortstop makes a great play and throw and hoses Tucker at first. RISP, two out, Belt up.

Belt lines one up the middle, scoring Torres!!!! Texas' deficit cut to one, 3-2. Keyes up.

Kevin swings at a bad pitch inside and pops up harmlessly to second. The Horned Frogs escape the inning, but not before yielding a two-out RBI single.

To the bottom of the 8th ...

So, down by 2 in the 8th with the leadoff man on. TCU changing pitchers. Does Augie bunt here?

(This may be the stupidest question ever asked on Hornfans)

Nothing wrong with the sacrifices in a tight game. With one on and no out in the top of the 6th, Torres just didn't execute. That pop up was brutal.

My guess is Augie will mix things up here and have Torres show bunt but then swing away.

Keyes has such long swing. Teams are going to keep coming into his kitchen until he can shorten up and pull his hands through

Green mows down the first two batters in the bottom of the 8th but walks the third batter and gets pulled. Dicharry in to face the meat of TCU's order, one on.

Hit-and-run puts runners on the corners for the Horned Frogs. Two out, Carpenter up.

Johnson with another visit to the mound. Looks like Wood is coming in to close.

With the count 1-2, TCU's baserunners take off. The pitch is outside, however, and the runner at third is caught in a run down between third and home. Rupp tosses to Torres and the runner is tagged for out No.3.

Phew.

To the top of the 9th ...

Back-to-back groundouts end the inning and the game. TCU takes one, 3-2.

Well-played game. Great effort from Cole; just too many long balls, coupled with a poor offensive showing. Hope we can hook 'em tomorrow.

Wasted a great effort by Cole. Holding TCU to 3 today should have been enough. The bats will have to wake up tomorrow. Workman and Jungmann are fresh as are Dicharry and Wood so the staff will be strong but cant win if dont score runs.

A very ho-hum performance from a team looking to get back to the CWS for the first time since 2005. TCU definitely wanted this game more. Hope we show up with some more fire tomorrow.
