Texas State looking to go D1-A

I was at that last playoff loss in 05 and it was pretty damn full. Even though we lost, it was really cool to see everyone in there. I had to go to games when I was a pledge and then 2 of my fraternity brothers were starters, so I went to see them. Sucked losing all the time.

I just wish they could find a good coach who appreciated the school, town and opportunity to stay there long term and build the program into a 1AA power. That would be SO badass! But that will never happen.

TexLaw04,

I'd go even farther and advocate for a 30-team Super D-IA. Fill the schedule every year with the likes of Michigan, tOSU, USC and Alabama. Now THAT would be a hell of a schedule. No more New Mexico States or ULALAs.

You guys that went to SWT yet went to UT games are part of the problem. If you guys had contributed to your university along with others in your boat, maybe Texas State would have been FBS a long time ago. Really, I think you supporting TxST means more to them than your money going to UT. I realize UT had the better team, but you spent probably $30-60 /ticket to go to UT games, yet TxSt games were free.

Let me address a couple of things here:
First attendance: The minimum attendance for FBS is 15,000 per year average. Technically we could already do that because the stadium seats 15,700 but it will be expanded initially to 25,000 and then a second time to 33,000. We already have better attendance on average that Rice, when they don't play UT in Houston to pad their home average, and are close to UNT and SMU. We sold out three games in 2005, and one in 2006. When the team wins the stadium is filled. You also have to figure that the crouds will go up when we are playing teams that people know at home like Houston and SMU for example.
The reason this is being pushed now: Simply because of UTSA's creation of a football program. UTSA will start FCS with the goal of moving up to FBS two to three years after. If Texas State is sandwiched between two FBS programs we wouldn't be able to complete for recruits and a UTSA FBS program would severely hurt Texas State's ability to recruit San Antonio and South Texas which is our strongest recruiting area right now. For those of you that haven't seen the UTSA plan they would play at the Alamodome which is a huge advantage that UTSA has over Texas State at this point.
The need to succeed: This is more than just a move up in football ranking, this is about improvement in all sports. To become attractive to another conference Texas State must compete and win and draw crowds in all sports, not just football. That's why the first facility built will be a new baseball/softball complex. Bobcat stadium will be expanded as mentioned earlier and in a few years Strahan Colleseum will also be expanded to seat a little over 10,000 (right now it holds 7,600).
For those of you that have talked recruiting let me say that this years class compares very well with schools like SMU, Houston, UTEP and other CUSA schools (I would give us the edge over Rice). The difference is they have more scholorships to offer and there is also a prestige factor in playing for an FBS team over an FCS team (yes even if your school is in the Sunbelt). There is also an issue of getting more teams into conference tournaments in other sports. Right now even the Sunbelt can place multiple teams in Volleyball, Basketball and Baseball and the Southland doesn't, usually only the automatic bid to the conference champion gets in.
Sorry for the book, hope that answers a few questions.

I tend to agree that sledding would be tough for "State" should UTSA move quickly to the ranks of FBS. It would behoove us to cultivate a "friendly big brother" relationship with either/both as they move toward our subdivision. The last thing we need is a sense of enmity that results in any (more) negative recruiting against us and cheapshots taken on the field at our stars 2 weeks before any given OU game.

A rivalry between UTSA and TSU, now that would be fun. Building a division of some conference (CUSA?) or even a new 'junior SWC' around Rice, UH, UTEP, UTSA, SMU, UNT, (TCU?) and TSU might end up making sense. With careful scheduling so as not to conflict with our games, they might attract a meaningful share of the rich TX TV market.

There are a very large number of football fans in this state, enough to support quite a few schools, especially considering many of us will support more than one. As far as talent goes, Texas supplies NCAA with over 300 football scholarship athletes per year. That is enough for at least a dozen complete recruiting classes.

How cool would it be for Texas to field 4 BCS teams and sport its very own midmajor?

EDIT Oops UNT added.

I think the can have a good 1A baseball team, and maybe even bring up other sports like basketball or tennis... with football, they'll be just another Baylor...

The State of Texas is growing and it needs more TIER 1 universities. UT will always be the flagship and it has an insurmountable lead over the upstarts but I think you will see Texas Tech and one or two other state schools moving up in terms of academic prestige and research. So in 10 years, you could have UT as the flagship with aggy, Tech and one or two other schools being TIER 1 research universities.

After that, you will need schools like UTSA, Texas State, UNT, UTEP & UH to provide accessible education for the rest of the state's students. UTSA will have 40k students probably by 2020 and is looked at by a lot of kids in the Rio Grande Valley, Houston and Laredo as a quality school. UT and aggy will always have an advantage but both schools cannot expand their undergrad enrollment anymore and schools like Tech will also be looking to expand the quality of its students as well. So where will all of the average to above average students go that cannot get into UT and do not want to be a part of a cult?

UTSA has very good leadership right now and if you look at the investment in construction that is going on right now by the UT system, you can see that they are making a push to be a major university in the state. The UT system understands that they need to better serve the booming hispanic population of the state that lives south of I-10 and in the metro areas of Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. UTSA will be an important part in meeting these needs in the future.

Dang:
Texas State is D-1 in baseball and every other sport, it plays in the FCS (1-AA) football division but is in the same division as Texas in all other sports. In baseball and softball in fact Texas State is very competitive with Texas. The games are always close (Texas had to come back from a 4-2 defecit to win 5-4 in the latest softball meeting with Texas State) and always fun to watch.
