Texas @ Richmond 12/15/2024

Wow, so offensively inept this game. Hope Texas has gotten that out of their system, or they won't be seeing that coveted Final Four.

You know, call me silly (and I know Vic is trying to play different folks), but I really thought the four starters from last year would be the core, add a shooter, and everybody else would be situational players. Vic keeps starting them, but there's at least 2 (or 3) who aren't playing well, yet. I've been very surprised by that.

I don’t really feel like today correlates to how it will go in January. We’ve got three more games before that to gel.

Jak played 14 minutes and only one turnover and hit couple of buckets. She’d get more playing time if she can keep the TO’s down consistently, but until today she’s made it hard for Vic to leave her in.

We are 10-1 and took the team that is most likely #2 or 3 in rankings tomorrow into OT on the road. We’ve had 20 pt + games from multiple players.

We’ll gel. We’ll have a stellar season.

The offense would probably run smoother with a high ball screen isolation, instead of the weave and pounding the ball inside. We don't have 3 point shooters to spread the court enough for post play to work. So anytime you throw it inside and its not a quick basket it's just asking for a turnover.

Id do a high ball screen with harmon beating them on the bounce or with Booker shooting over them. Then get the ball inside on the help or kick to Holle for a corner 3.

We thought that was going to be Phelia, but sometimes *&^% happens and a retina can take 3-6 mos to heal.
From the Google search...

"While retinal detachment surgery has a greater than 90% success rate, it may still take weeks to months to see clearly. In some cases, vision may never fully return or some patients may not recover any vision."

I was a bit frustrated last week because Phelia wasn't playing much, but now I get it. It's very possible that she may still be struggling with some vision issues. That's the only thing that I can think of.

She doesn't appear to be mad about not playing. That leads me to believe there's still something going on and both she and the staff understand the situation, whatever it is. I hope she gets back to her former self soon. She's a heck of a player and we need her.

As far as our shooting woes are concerned, that's life on the road sometimes. Hell... it's life at home sometimes. That's why you place a premium on the defensive side of the ball as well as scoring. It's our 7th game in a little over 2 weeks, and only one of those were at home. Honestly, we looked like we were a little fatigued today.

Given the circumstances, if I'm a guessing person I'd guess Vic is probably happy with the win even though there is still plenty of fixing to be done. We're still not always making good reads against the zone, and defensively we're not always as connected as we need to be. I believe we'll get there... may have to take a few lumps along the way... but we'll get there.

Richmond has a good team, and they're well-coached. They beat Oklahoma State already. The officiating was bad both ways.

You should apply for the job opening as head coach… no wait.

Game notes and Richmond coach's post game presser. He's very complimentary of our program and staff, and also shares some very interesting comments. In particular, a philosophy he shares with Vic pertaining to scheduling elite competition in non-conference schedules. Definitely worth a listen.
