Texas Rangers 2022 Thread

Good chance I will be at game Saturday against Mariners, if anyone else will be there pm me and perhaps we can put faces to names, well screen names.

Just got DMN email saying he's gone too.

Rangers came out of All Star Break in a funk and this past weekend aside have not looked good. I didn't expect a managerial change during the year but cant say I am shocked as they were almost certainly headed to one at the end of the year.

^Just got my email from the Startelegram confirming it. I agree with you - it was inevitable. Maybe this gives them a headstart on finding his replacement before the other clubs start firing managers and also looking for replacements.

Hard to win when you have one starting pitcher and no consistent Bull Pen.

Daniels and Young seem to be living in never-never land if they think the Rangers are "close" to bring a contender.

Daniels should never have been hired. He had almost no experience, and he was usually bad at trades and attrocious at player development. I hoped he would get better over time, but it never happened. Should have been canned years ago.

Rangers sit ten games below .500 with 38 games left. 18-20 over those last 38 gets them to 75 wins which by any reasonable measure is a step in the right direction type of season. With all the changes Recently, I am pleasantly surprised that the Rangers are holding it together and still having real shot at getting to 75 wins.

^And look at their record on one-run games. If they had won half of their one-run games, they would have a great shot at finishing above .500 for the season. Hope Chris works hard on (a) developing the pitchers currently in the minors and (b) working Free Agent/Trade markets for a starter or two for next season. If they can fill those holes, they could have a reasonable shot at a Wild Card next year.

I hear you HHD, but I am getting tired of hearing "a guy here and a guy there," and they will be competitive. I am not buying it anymore. There is more to a team than just a collection of players. Each player has to approach each game with a mindset of winning. I am not sure the current collection of guys collectively want to win. They want their at-bats/5 innings per game and could care less about winning. Maybe Beasley can change that, maybe not.

Rangers have driven into their all too familiar late season ditch. Suddenly even getting to 70 wins seems unlikely. I just get so frustrated. I know next year is new manager new overall management but gosh darn it give me something these last few weeks to have some hope.

I agree FW. The question is do they have the right people who can judge talent and then will ownership be ready to write 6 or 7 major checks?

I just don't believe the organization knows what they are doing. I see the RR Express frequently enough to know they don't have any "it" guys on the team as the future. Back in the day when they were with the Astros they had a couple obvious clutch guys who always delivered in big moments and ended up being all stars for the stros. They don't have that at all right now.

Well, the season's over for the Rangers - and short of the hoped-for 70 wins. Some progress (offensively), but a lot of work to do in the off-season to bolster the pitching staff. Hope Chris gets to work now and is ready to start signing FAs and trades the day after the Series ends.

While the Dallas News' editorial issues leave a gulf to overcome. However, at times, they come up with good sports analysis. Today they break down another Rangers' lost season but show there could be hope starting next year.

I know a paywall is involved. PM me for a workaround if you are interested.

Ugh... first game of the playoffs and San Diego smokes the Mets (and Scherzer). Check a couple of familiar names in the Padres box score:

Bochy is the new manager. I hope they gave him a lot of money because the pitching situation could get ugly if they don't sign Perez and maybe two more starters.

I like the hire of Bochy - he has the skins on the wall. Now let's see the owners open up the checkbook to sign the desperately-needed pitching talent.

Bochy was a great manager and if this was ten years ago I would be really excited about bringing him on but everything I am seeing says this is a placeholder and not a long term hire. Given his age, his health issues, and his unwillingness to go the analytics route (in direct contrast to the Rangers management) its hard to see him managing more than a season or two. I don't know if this is really just no one was available and Texas just wants to see who will be available at the same time next year while they continue to develop this team but I am not crazy about the hire.

I did see that with the final run differential Texas should have won 77 games this year (9 more than it did) and maybe Bochy gets 10-12 more wins next season with his experience and that gets the Rangers close to .500 and sets up the next hire when the young pitchers in the minors are ready to step up. Texas is still 2-3 years away from being competitive and that is so frustrating.

FWHORN, I'll take that - that would be a step in the right direction. And there's an unknown here - how will the Rangers do is Free Agency/trades for starting pitchers? If they can hit the jackpot in this area, it could speed up the growth process.

I haven't praised a Ranger hire in years. They almost always hire people with little or no experience, and it shows. The Bochy hire is an exception. I think it's an excellent move. Is he a long term solution? No, but he can be here long enough to groom a long term solution. Furthermore, he has been around the game long enough to know and hire competent people in other positions. Also, since he played for Bochy for a while, it wouldn't surprise me if Young is fairly deferential to him, on personnel moves, which would be a good thing.
