Texas Rangers 2021 Thread

Really hard to see scenario that has Rangers winning more than 55 games and frankly just getting to the bare 50 is an open question. This is a historically bad team and I need to go back and look but Rangers could challenge for worst record ever in 162 game era.:whiteflag:

You are correct FW, but Arizona is worse and Baltimore is just as bad. Good thing baseball isn't a regulation league.

Detroit in 2003 went 43-119, have to believe Rangers win two more games so they can’t be worst in 162 game era but they may be top five or ten worst in this era. The 2018 Orioles went 47-115. Of course the ‘62 Mets were worst with 120 losses though they played in 160 game season. Man this is depressing research.

^We can only hope that the Rangers are copying the model of the Braves in the late 80's - building the farm system, learning how to develop players in the minors, and preparing to feed the big team from within. It worked well for the Braves. They stocked the farm system, developed their players in the minors, fed them up to the majors - and when they were one or two key pieces from contending, they had a well-stocked farm from which they could trade prospects for a Maddux or Smoltz. And their results in the 90's were quite good. Rangers, take note.

In my opinion they have one real prospect and thats their catcher Yohel Pozo. That dude is a stud and is my favorite player on the team to watch.

And just like that Pozo was called up and is currently a DH for the Rangers. I already miss him because the new catcher can't hit for ****.

Trip to Austin on the 4th messed with the count. One loss (Saturday's game) has been deleted from the tally.

With one month left to play the Rangers actually, sort of steadied the boat with some solid wins. As of the start of play yesterday, the 70 game win total liner number is 58 wins while the Rangers sit at 47 wins.

Baltimore (42 wins) and Arizona (45 wins) still worse off than the Rangers. However, the Rangers cannot afford to lose more than 12 games over the remainder of the Season to avoid losing 100 games.

^Viper, I don't think they can make it to 70. But I'm happy if they make some real progress with the younger players at this point. We need to find out who can play for the future.

I agree the last 3 weeks or so have shown some hope. The steal of Peters from the Dodgers was a real stroke of genius (luck?).

If they get 60-64 wins that is a good September rally. I was worried about getting to 50 wins a few weeks ago.

Playing .500 ball in September will be a good accomplishment. I am just holding my breath that we do not hear that Alexy is hurt and will miss 2022.

I like what I've seen the last few days. It's a long road yet to becoming contenders, but it's a start.
BTW, I have tickets for the game Monday against the Astros. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers do against a very good team.

20 games left and if the Rangers go 10-10 they avoid a 100 loss season. Now that I have jinxed that 2-18 it will be.

Incidentally I have tickets to Sunday's game with the White Sox so if any of you Hornfans Ranger fanatics are going to be in the house let me know.

Well, I went yesterday - it was painful. I left after the 6th inning, when it was 13-1. That finishes my tickets for this season. I'm not sure what I'll do next season. IMO, the Rangers are still more than one season away from contending.

Two plus HHD unless they open the checkbook for an experienced above-average pitcher, infielder, and outfielder that can hit above .290 in the offseason. Otherwise, 2022 could be a little better (maybe only 85 to 90 losses) and 2023 a breakeven season.

My issue is I don't see the current ownership and management committed to doing what is necessary to eventually build a Series contender.

Viper, I hope you're wrong - but I fear you're right. Ownership will have to agree to open up the checkbook and write some big numbers to get the Free Agent help they need. Let's see how influential the new GM is.

My second visit to the new park and this time we sat in the cheap seats up on the 300's. Note to all fans going to Ranger games at the new park, if you are in the upper deck bring a sweater the AC is cranked up and it is cold cold cold up there. I mean bad enough that several families in our section were bailing to the lower rows and dealing with crying kids. Hell I was so cold would have cried too if I wasnt you know a 50 plus year old man. We waited until the fourth inning and moved down to a 200 section but even there it was still chilly. Obviously the upper decks are going to get the full force of the blowers so the lower decks feel pleasant. Tough to be a peon. Other than dealing with the unexpected cold front I remain incredibly impressed with the new digs, The amenities, the ample food choices and numerous picnic tables all over to eat at, and Texas Live is incredible on a football Sunday with all the fans in watching games before and after the Ranger game. The baseball was typical Rangers, fall behind, waste chances to stay in game and basically leave me thinking 2024 is the earliest they will be competitive. I know I am part of a dying breed but I still believe that nothing beats a Sunday at the ball park, bad baseball or not.

FWHORN, glad you got to go. My season tickets (as part of a group of my golf buddies) are in Section 314 - right behind home plate. IMO, those are the best affordable seats in the ballpark - a great view of the entire field, and being right behind home plate, I can call balls and strikes!
My one big gripe about the new ballpark is the parking situation - if you don't have a season parking pass, it's a looooong walk from the cheap lots.
As you noted, next season won't be a bunch better - hopefully the Rangers are working hard at player development in the minors. And the ownership needs to be ready to write some big checks for a few key Free Agents..

Viper, I didn't find it uncomfortable in Section 314. Maybe I'm sitting away from A/C outlets. I like the seats - I like the panoramic view of the playing field behind home plate. It's easy to see everything that's happening in the game.

We were in 322 and the blowers are above the third to last row blowing right onto the seats. I don't know if they extend all the way around the stadium or are just in certain sections so there may well be 300 level sections that aren't as bad. I can tell you that up the first base line those 300 sections are right under the blowers and good idea to bring a hoodie or sweater no matter how hot it is outside the stadium. Now that being said, the 300 level amenities are fantastic and I am still very impressed overall with the new stadium, its sight lines, amenities and atmosphere.

Unless the Rangers go undefeated to end the season they will have 100 or more losses for first time since Nixon was President and I was in diapers, not good, not good at all.

The 100-loss season will happen - can't be avoided at this point. It's a done deal.
What matters is this - what have the Rangers done in this lost season to improve on the record next year? Have they concentrated on player development in the minors? Have they found some players who are ready for the Show? Do they have a plan for the selective acquisition of Free Agents? Guess we'll start seeing some of these questions answered in the off-season.

If the Rangers do not sign one good high profile pitcher and fielder in the off season we will finally know the heat in the old stadiums was not the issue.

The franchise isn't in a good place right now.

Rangers win today to stave off ignominy for another day and stay at 99 losses, just need undefeated week to end the season without hitting triple digit losses.

Rangers win last night and are now 58-99 with five games left. Zona and Baltimore have both gotten to 50 wins so the old adage everyone wins 50, everyone loses 50, its what you do with the other 62 has held true for this year.
