Texas over Dayton

The team will play 3 games in 3 days as part of the tournament. Coach G said she did her best to play everyone and to give everyone some rest.

Erika really looked good tonight, hitting her shots with ease. Ashleigh got lots of playing time in the second half and she was always around the ball, rebounding, driving to the hoop and making things happen. Keep it up Fontenette!!

Yvonne Anderson made some nice moves to the hoop tonight as well. As a team, we need to work on blocking out and rebounding. Our defense gave Dayton fits, causing lots of turnovers and lots of hurried and missed shots.

Way to play Longhorns!!

Ashleigh and Yvonne were both very impressive. I was especially glad to see AG come back after halftime...I was worried!!

Can't wait for tomorrow night, and Monday night's match-up with ODU should be a great game!!

I liked what I saw in this opening game. Much better execution than in the exhibition game. I don’t think any of the other two teams in this tourney will give the Horns much trouble. ODU will be the toughest game but they won’t get some of the looks they got against St. Mary’s.

All 11 players got in and all played well. It was especially good to see Kristen and Aubry play so well. Both were physical inside, especially Aubry, and provided strong rebounding and defense and some welcome offensive scoring from Kristen. Aubry was great on the boards, least three times ripping the rebound out of a Dayton player’s hands.

The freshmen are good. They will provide outstanding depth this year. They hustle on defense and Ashleigh and Yvonne are going to provide points. AG is really physical inside. She was hard to move on defense and cleared out space well on offense. She showed a tendency to use her arm to hook the defensive player when she was trying to score but no foul was called the times she did it so it looks to be okay. I’m really excited by how poised the freshmen played. With a short roster, they will have to contribute all year.

Our vets looked good. It was awesome to see Erika back on the court. She had an outstanding first half shooting the ball. She’s much quicker and active. She looked like she was having a lot of fun out there.

They got work to do but that’s to be expected this early in the season. But they look cohesive, well conditioned, and aggressive throughout the game. With all 11 players able to contribute, there should be no problems with fatigue. I like the schedule leading to the Tennessee game. The Horns may lose a game or two but they have a very good chance to win all of them and be undefeated when the Lady Vols come to town.

Oh, yeah. Like others, I thought AG had suffered a serious injury before the half. It was a relief and surprise to see her come back into the game early in the second half.

I agree with the above except that I think the ODU game could be a very tough game. St. Mary's looked to be the worst team of the 4 - too sloooow. Will be interesting to see what ODU can do against Dayton.

Was also glad to see AG come back and play in the second half. It looked like she tweaked her ankle at the end of the first half. May slow her down for a bit, but hopefully not for too long,

No points for Ashley Lindsey, and no rebounds for Ashley Gayle?

I know minutes were limited, and Gayle got hurt, but we gotta to better than that in the post . . .

Horns outscored Dayton 24-12 in the paint. And out rebounded them by 13, 44-31. I grant you that I expected both Ashleys to have scored and rebounded a bit more but Kristen and Aubry delivered the post scoring and rebounding this game. Lindsey and AG only getting a total of five shots was surprising but the rebounding line for both was a big surprise. We'll see how they finish up for these three games.

Brittainey, Erika, Kat and Carla were a combined 11 of 34 from the floor? A shooting percentage of 32% for that group is pretty low against a team that shouldn't have given them that much trouble. Good to see that the freshmen guards shot better.

Even more worrisome to me is that the guards barely got to the FT line. Did nobody attack the basket? Sounds like there was a lot of settling for long range jumpers.
