#8 (AP)/#7 (Coaches) Texas (24-2; 13-2) will travel to unranked Texas Tech (11-15; 2-13) on Wed. Texas will be seeking their sixth straight win in the series which would be the second longest winning streak for Texas since winning 37 in a row from 01/15/1977 through 02/26/1991. Tech has lost five in a row while Texas will be seeking their third straight win. Texas has clinched the second spot in the conference and is looking to go to Baylor for the last Big 12 game with a chance to tie for the league title. Horns lead the series 66-29.
Tech has two primary scorers: Ivonne Cook-Taylor (#2, 5-8 RS Jr. G) and Japreece Dean (#24, 5-6 Fr. G). They average 13.5 ppg and 11.5 ppg, respectively. The next two scorers average 6.0 and 6.2 ppg. These are Rayven Brooks (#11, 6-0 Sr. G) and Leashja Grant (#25, 6-2 Jr. C). Zuri Sanders (#30, 6-0 Fr. F) has the highest FG% on the team at 53.3% but has only taken 30 shots. Cook-Taylor (86-237; 36.3%), Dean (59-194; 30.4%), Brooks (29-118; 24.6%) and Grant (36-90; 40.0%) are the leading shooters for the Lady Raiders. Sanders and Grant are the only ones making at least 40% of their shots. Tech has taken 254 3pters, connecting on 72 for 28.3%. Dean (16-64; 25.0%), Brooks (13-57; 22.8%), Ryann Bowser (#4, 5-8 Sr. G; 19-48; 39.6%) and Dayo Olabode (#32, 6-2 Soph. F; 13-42; 31.0%) are the top 3pt shooters for Tech with Bowser the most accurate. The Lady Raiders have three players making over 80% from the FT line: Dean (39-47; 83.0) who leads Tech in FTs made and attempted, Brooks (19-23; 82.6%) and Olabode (13-16; 81.3%). Cook-Taylor also does a good job at the FT line, hitting 23-30 for 76.7%. Statistically, the players to foul at the end of the game are Grant (21-41; 51.2%) and Brielle Blaire (#00, 6-2 Fr. F) who is made only 12-33 for 36.4%.
Cook-Taylor (5.6 rpg) and Grant (5.5 rpg) are the leading rebounders. Four others average at least 3.0 rpg. Dean is the best at setting up teammates at 3.0 apg. Brooks (1.8 apg) and Bowser (1.2 apg) are the only others averaging at least one assist a game. Tech’s 9.2 apg ranks last in the Big 12. Brooks has 24 steals with Dean at 20. Three more have reached double digit steals. Grant has 11 steals to top the team. Brooks has nine blocks while Blaire has eight.
Cook-Taylor and Dean have started all 15 conference games. Brooks and Grant have 14 starts in 15 games. Others with starts in league games include: Olabode (7 starts in 15 games), Jamie Roe (#35, 5-10 Sr. F) with 8 starts in 15 games and Bowser with 2 starts in 13 games. Roe, Cook-Taylor, Dean, Bowser and Brooks were the starters in the last game. Dean (25.9 mpg) and Cook-Taylor (33.1 mpg) are the ones that rarely take a break. Brooks (28.1 mpg), Grant (21.3 mpg), Bowser (21.3 mpg), Olabode (20.8 mpg), Blaire (12.4 mpg) and Roe (15.4 mpg) are the others that average double digit minutes. Sanders has seen action in all 15 games at an 8.7 mpg clip. Ionna McKenzie (#42, 6-2 Soph. C) has averaged 9.2 mpg in the 13 games she has played in.
While we have seen multiple players lead the team in scoring this season, the Horns have seen a fairly stable three prong scoring trio emerge in conference play. Imani heads up the trio at 12.7 ppg. Next in line is Brooke with an average of 11.8 ppg. Ariel is the third scorer in double digits at 10.4 ppg. Empress (7.8 ppg) and Kelsey (7.1 ppg) provide solid support. Imani (71-139; 51.1%) and Brooke (62-135; 45.9%) are basically neck and neck in FGs attempted. Ariel (58-109; 53.2%) and Empress (39-127; 30.9%) have also reached triple digit FG attempts. Next to reach triple digits should be Kelsey (45-85; 52.9%). Imani, Ariel, Kelsey and Tasia (52.4%) are all making over 50% of their shots. Brooke (29-66; 43.9%) has taken more 3s than Ariel and Empress who each has hit 10 of 32 treys for 31.3%. Celina (12-42; 28.6%) and Brady (6-18; 33.3%) are the other primary 3pt shooters for the Horns. Texas has three players making 80.0% plus from the FT line. Three others make over 70%. Imani leads in FTs made/attempted/% (47-57; 82.5%). Ariel (81.1%) and Kelsey (80.0%) join Imani in hitting at least 80% from the FT line. Other very good FT shooters are Empress (76.3$), Brady (78.6%) and Jordan (78.6$).
Imani’s 60 blocks almost doubles WVU’s Montgomery’s second place 36 blocks. Kelsey is tied for 10th in the league with her 18 blocks. Six players have reached double digits in steals, led by Brianna with 24, Celina with 21 and Ariel with 18. Horns continue to have three players making at least 2 apg in Celina (4.7 apg), Brooke (2.1 apg) and Empress (2.1 apg). Imani continues to be one of two players averaging a double double in league play with her 10.1 rpg to go with her 12.7 ppg. Kelsey (4.7 rpg), Brianna (4.5 rpg) and Celina (4.5 rpg) provide support on the boards along with Empress (3.5 rpg) and Ariel (3.4 rpg).
Imani, Empress, Brooke, Ariel and Celina started the last game fro the Horns. Imani, Empress and Brooke have started all 15 Big 12 games. Ariel, Brianna, Kelsey and Celina have split the starts at the other two spots with Celina getting 14 starts. Our PGs get the most minutes per game with Brooke leading with 31.5 mpg and Celina averaging 29.3 mpg. Imani, Ariel and Empress average over 20 mpg. Brianna, Kelsey and Brady average in the teens. LaShann (13 games, 9.4 mpg) and Jordan (14 games (8.8 mpg) make up the core ten player rotation.
Projected starting lineup based on the last game:
Texas______________TTU
Imani (6-7)________ Brooks (6-0)
Ariel (5-11)_______ Cook-Taylor (5-8)
Empress (5-9)_____ Bowser (5-8)
Celina (5-8)_______ Roe (5-10)
Brooke (5-4)______ Dean (5-8)
Not sure why Tech went with basically a five guard lineup, even if Roe is listed as a F. Expect to see Grant and Olabode get a lot of minutes inside against Imani and Kelsey. This is a game where we could see the twin towers get some significant minutes together. Dean and Cook-Taylor will be the main focus of the Texas defense as Tech’s top scorers. Tech will be giving up at least 3 inches inside and will have trouble stopping the inside game of the Horns. Tech will have problems with the Texas guards’ speed and quickness when pushing the ball and when being defended. For Texas, Imani will need to play strong defense inside without fouling while our guards should excel on the fast break.

Given Tech’s low scoring average, it would be easy to assume that they like to slow the game down. But they average only one less shot attempt per game than Texas does. Their problem is making shots, not taking shots. The Lady Raiders are ninth in the conference in FG%. They are eighth in 3pt FG%. They are ninth in FT%. They are last in scoring defense. Not a good combination for generating wins. Their tallest players are 6-2 although they have four of them they can use. They will run with the Horns but it looks like they will not be able to stay up with the points the Horns will put up.
Looks like an early game with tipoff at 6:30 PM CST. Television will be Fox Sports Southwest Plus. No radio is listed yet. Probably will be listed later in the texassports.com game preview.
