Texas locking down 2011 basketball talent

smh, I know you're not my biggest fan. But contrary to your belief I am not retarded. I understand that they aren't the level or possibly the talent of those players listed as comparisons. But there are a million reasons why they chose those players. Not the least would be that they wanted to avoid embarrassing me by picking players they were sure I'd heard of and they didn't want to spend all day trying to find some mediocre/decent college players that fit the comparison perfectly.

Anyway, can we get back to talking about the future of our basketball team? It always seems to make me MUCH happier than the present...

smh, what is the problem with someone saying that when they watch J'Mike they think of Acie Law? Or when they watch Aaron Harrison they think of Evan Turner? I don't get it. NO ONE IS SAYING THAT THEY ARE THAT GOOD!!! That's just who we think of when we watch them play.

There have been other posts about how Quincy Miller reminds someone of Kevin Durant. I didn't see you posting about how outrageous that was. Hell, I think someone just posted something a few weeks ago about how DeAndre Daniels reminds people of KD. Where were you then?

I actually think Miller is a great comparison to KD. Guy is incredible. He also handles like Durant handles now (I.e. better than in college), although his shot is not nearly as aesthetically pleasing (looks like some weird Shawn Marion shot with much more touch). From what I've heard, Daniels is going absolutely nuts on the AAU scene lately.

Sheldon McClellan has also been playing some fantastic ball the past few weeks. #1 complete player in Texas.

Yeah, McClellan lit up LeBryan Nash's team for 29 last weekend. Nash only had 10 and almost all were in transition. Before that game he didn't play very hard. He is without question an absolute stud......but he doesn't play very hard. He seems to only get after it when he is playing head up with another elite player. I'm not worried about his skill level when he gets to UT, but I am curious to see how him and Barnes get along. Especially with the other 3 that are coming in.

Daniels is only going to get better. I loved him last year at the Elite Camp, and you could tell that he had a lot of room to grow skill wise. Not that he wasn't skilled, he just wasn't as polished as he will be. I think he is what people want Winston Sheppard to be. A 6'8 SF that can do a lot of things at a high level. It's just not there yet with Winston.

Does anybody have any highlights from McClellan? They only ones I've seen were from like 8th grade and obviously are completely outdated.

Best bet is to search "Bellaire basketball," and you'll get several highlights from games this year.

I recorded a few games last year. I have yet to transfer them to my computer. FWIW, I am planning on going to a lot of games this coming season for both Bellaire and LaMarque, camcorder in toe.

Looking at the 2011 posts from around the state, what do you guys think about 6-10 Geoff Groselle and 6-8 Jonathan Holmes?

Groselle looks like a Jason Klotz clone, and Holmes is having a good summer. Read that Groselle has talked to Texas a little bit, but I'm sure he's down the list a little. Youtube has some film on him, and he looks ok...needs to get stronger though, but he plays tough for a 6-10 guy.

I don't think anybody believes either of those players are "Texas-good" (stupidest phrase ever). Especially if one is a Jason Klotz clone...

Thomas Gipson may or may not be "Texas good" either, but the kid is having another good showing this summer at the Pangos AA Camp out in California. Everyone does acknowledge the fact that he's a tad undersized at the PF spot, but scouts are raving about his brute force, hard working style of play.

From Scout:
"The Cedar Hill (Tex.) High standout works as hard as anyone in the paint. Gipson focuses on locking up the glass and he does a pretty good job of it. Using his 6-foot-7, 240-pound wide, but strong frame, Gipson gets physical inside and grabs any board in his area. Offensively, he’s an aggressive and often times looks to face up for mid-range jumpers or out muscle the defense inside."

UT can't afford to take a chance on a project or undersized PF with this class, and at this time. Especially with the big men that are available in the following classes.

They are in a position now where they can't afford to miss on a big man like they have with Chapman, Hill, and Wangmene. They also aren't in a position to wait for one to develop like they did with Pittman, Klotz, Atchley.

They have to go out and get the next LaMarcus Aldridge, Boddicker, Mihm, Thomas, Buckman. To me that's getting Christmas or Wiltjer. Mentioning anyone not on that level would be a great disappointment due to the level of talent in the backcourt.

I don't think he's a post. I think he is a Brian Boddicker type of big that would be perfect for our pick and pop offense.

I don't remember Chapman ever getting national attention so that is a little too far. I can see the similarities in their game, but Wiltjer is the better player. UT might have signed Chapman hoping he would fill a similar role, but that hasn't happened yet.

I guess I should have been clearer. We need big men that can play! Not guys that we will have to develop, or hope that their lack of height isn't an issue. Maybe that's not Wiltjer, but it's not the other 3 that were talked about for sure.

I would be very appreciative if we got into it with Anthony Davis or Johnny O'Bryant. Davis reminds me of Lamarcus back in high school and O'Bryant is a DeMarre Carroll clone, albeit taller and far more talented. BTW, anybody else immediately picture Jarvis Varnado when they see Rakeem Christmas play? Same height, build, athleticism, and skill set.

are y'all really signing 6 in '11?

how realistic of a shot do y'all have at Christmas? same question for J. O'Bryant

LB Nash is awesome. I don't care how many McClenndon scored on his team.

2012 guards, I am highly doubtful Rose, Reese and Suilomon (sp?) go to the same school and I've seen no leaders. I don't think BU is involved with Rose at all, although I do think we're chasing Reese and Rasheed in addition to Keith Frazier.

Q. Miller hasn't been playing as well and doesn't show the athleticism people thought 2 years ago when he was touted as the #1 player in his class. my guess is people are overreacting and his falling ranking will be shown to be a little inaccurate, his skill set is pretty top notch, IMO. I hope he keeps falling, i think BU is still talking to him although we're a loooooooong shot

We are taking 6 in '11 for sure. Two bigs will be added to the backcourt guys.

We are in Christmas' top 4-5. Don't know exactly where we stand in that group, but when you factor in immediate playing time and with a talented roster I wouldn't count us out.

I don't think we will be able to sign O'bryant, or even make his final cut.

Nash is very good, but he's a tweener. He is thought of more highly nationally than by guys that evaluate within the state and see kids more often. Not that he isn't a major D-1 player, but top 10 could be too high. UT is not going to get him.

I also agree that Rose, Reese, and Rasheed S. don't go to the same school. Rose is a PG, Reese will need to be a PG b/c of his size, and Rasheed is a combo guard that will see more time at SG.

I don't see Rose as a Baylor guy. Either UT or OOS. Reese could go to Baylor. I know his dad likes Baylor and UT. I haven't really heard much about Rasheed, but I know UT loves him.

GoHorns,

I'm going by a couple of sources that have seen the guys a lot over the past couple of years and talk to coaches. you are correct, Q Miller was never #1 as I said, but he was way, way up there before he dropped some recently.

L. ross is interesting. Hard to believe he's dropped so much. he came to a Baylor camp as a soph and was very impressive, but since then I think a lot has changed with him.

Gotcha bularry. I think Ross will be a very good college player for some team. It's definitely the level that most fits his abilities/skillset out of the three (AAU/college/NBA).
