Texas locking down 2011 basketball talent

I'd be worried about Deandre Daniels right now. He hasn't heard from CIF on his appeal for another year of eligibility. (He is in ta situation of having exhausted his playing years in California HS ball.)

We all just saw how well Hamilton and Brown fit in after a year away from regular competition.

Even if he is ruled ineligible in California, I don't understand why Daniels couldn't (and why Hamilton didn't) transfer to a prep school to play next season?

I know a certain Nevada school that I'm sure would love to have him

No, you know a certain formerly based in Nevada basketball academy that no longer has a high school attached to it.

If only Daniels could magically complete all his core requirements this summer and appear in Austin for the fall semester.

I want to get excited about these recruits but I'm still shell-shocked from our previous season.
But I sure hope Barnes kicks butt from now on.

Good point bierce. Prep academy thingy. Anyway, Findlay said finding another Vegas school would be little problem.

Sheldon and Julien are having bad springs on the AAU circuit and Rivals has noticed with their new rankings.

I think we'll take two bigs, hopefully Christmas and either Wiltjier or O'Bryant. Actually any of the 3 would be huge.

3ball, how do you know about McClellan and Lewis? I noticed the same thing on Rivals, though it seems Daniels is moving on up. I'm actually shocked Myck is not top ten, basically every tournament or competition he attends he is the most talked about player. Also, how did Quincy Miller drop? That guy is far and away the best player in the class and is stunningly familiar to Kevin Durant. Finally, Gilchrist is the most overrated player I've seen since Josh McRoberts.

my verdict isn't in quite yet on gilchrist, so i can't ultimately say if it's a good comparison or not.

you did, however, make a very strong & definitive one. not a whole lot of gray area regarding how you see him when you compare him to josh mcroberts. that's a high level of hype/suckage ratio to attain to.

I would love to see Texas go after 6-7 PF Thomas Gipson out of Cedar Hill. Dude is a monster junk yard dog. He hasn't grown much since his Fr/Soph years, but he's 240lbs and strong as an ox. He's dropped in alot of the ranking but he's going to be a fine 4 year college basketball player that teams hate playing against.

I hope all of these guys can work up enough "want-to" to split with Baylor sometime this decade.

GoHornsGo, I live in Houston and read RCSSports.com pretty often to see how certain guys are performing. There have been mulitple games where McClellan has had 2-5 points. Lewis has missed some tournaments with an ankle injury but when he has played, he hasn't shined. He might not even be a top 5 guard on his AAU team. He plays with J-Mycal Reese, LJ Rose, Rasheed Salumain, Keith Frazier (2013), and Anthony Collins.

Thanks 3ball, that's good info. I wish you'd post more of it, if you don't mind? I didn't know Lewis played with Houston Hoops. Do you agree with most services that Rose and Reese are both top 10 prospects in 2012? I haven't gotten to see them play at all. All I know is Reese is more of a scorer and L.J. is a lead guard. Can you analyze them for me?

I don't know about top 10 because I haven't seen everyone nationally but both are VERY good. LJ is a pure PG. Very smooth and effective. He does a great job of running the offense and finding open teammates. He is a good shooter as well. He's not very quick, but it doesn't stop him from getting where he wants on the floor.

Reese is a scorer. I think what is going to keep him from being ranked really high is the question of whether he is a 1 or a 2. At his size you would prefer him to be a 1, but he's too much of a scorer. He kind of reminds me of a better CJ Jerrals.

The one to really watch is Rasheed S. The dude can play. I wouldn't be surprised to see him ranked ahead of Reese when it's all said and done.

Frazier is also one to keep an eye on. 6'4 SG with a nice stroke. He'll be one of the top 5 players in the state throughout HS.

Rasheed Sulaimon 6'3 G Strake Jesuit 2012

By the end of the summer he will be highly regarded nationally. Maybe more so than Reese.

I think I already mentioned this on here before, but Texas is loaded with talent in 2012. Houston alone has 6-8 guys that UT couldn't go wrong with. Maybe more as time goes on. The problem will be having scholarship #'s. With us taking 6 in 2011 we won't have many in 2012.

Yeah, the state is loaded. Isaiah Austin is an absolute must. Plus there's guys like Wannah Bail, who has been blowing up lately.

But I think the real prize of the class will ultimately be Shabazz Muhammed. Coleman is too fat and has probably tapped out, a la Josh Smith. Austin and Andre Drummond both seem to have the Perry Jones syndrome to go along with his measurables.

Ideally, IMO, the class would look like: Isaiah Austin, C; J-Mychal Reese, SG; L.J. Rose, PG; Wannah Bail, SF; Shabazz Muhammed, SF. Maybe throw in bierce's Canadian Indian 7'4" guy and call it the best class in the country. It's a big class, but 2010 is small and I could realistically see Jordan, Myck, Cory, Tristan, and maybe another 2011 recruit leaving early.

BTW, 6 2011 recruits...the other two would be Nash and Christmas?

Austin is a 7'0 3 point shooter that can't post up. He'll have to really improve inside before I'd say he's a must. I don't think Bail will happen due to who his "handler" is. He'll go Baylor or OOS. I'd be fine with 2 out of LJ, Reese, or Rasheed. Shabazz and Drummand would be awesome. There is also Winston Sheppard out there.

The only problem with taking 5 in the 2012 class is that 2013 is just as good at the top. We have 5 legit McDonald's AA candidates in 2013. The Harrison twins and Derrick Griffin out of Houston and Keith Frazier and Julius Randle out of Dallas, are all beasts. I heard Jordan Hamilton's brother was moving to TX also. That would be 6 guys that can REALLY go in the 2013 class just in TX

Not only those guys for the 2013 class, but also look out for Justin Jackson out of the Houston area whom one scout compared to Kevin Durant.

Yeah, I've seen Justin a few times. He's not a KD type. He is slow. He can REALLY shoot the rock though. Maybe the best shooter in the state for 2013. All the other guys would destroy him though with their athleticism, strength, and ball handling.

But you're right. At the end of the day he'll be up there in the national and state rankings, and someone we'd be glad to have.....as long as it wasn't at the expense of one of the 1st 5 guys.

Texas basketball is really starting to pick up and could become an elite talent pool from 2012 and on. More analyst are starting to attend more Texas events and are making sure they catch the top Texas teams at OOS events.

I don't like Shepard, but I'm not giving out scholarships and evidently others love him since he's a top 15 guy. Watch his mix tape from the Jayhawk tournament earlier this spring. He has to have the only highlight tape in the world where he only makes 2 shots. Amazing.

Yes, I was talking about Isaiah Austin. Ranked high on potential and height. Not actual production. No post up game.

I've heard about the Robinson twins, but have not seen them play. If they are better than the Harrison twins I'll take them.
