Texas @ KSU 01/13/2024

We gave this game away. What a joke. Missing bunnies and mishandling the rock. And bAiler lost today at isu where we do not have to play this season. We will beat the cr*p out of this team at Moody, but that is small consolation for the blown opportunity today. Might be the difference btwn a good season vs. a conf. championship.

Jones just didn't answer the bell today on either end of the floor. Very disappointing.
I agree 100%. For all of Jones' size and bulk, she totally got outplayed and didn't help on the offensive end, either. DeYona didn't do much, and Shaylee and Shay's offensive output was pathetic. Overall, hugely disappointing because the game was right there for the taking.

Great game by both teams - they stayed with their game plans of tough defense, hence not a lot of 3 pointers available. Not a lot of bad or strange calls, either. As previously noted, last minutes of the 3rd Q lost the game, IMHO. We fumbled a pass under the basket, then got a shot blocked next time down the court in the last minute or 2 of the 3qtr. KState is good, Mitte is a good coach. We'll get 'em in Austin.

Hate to lose, but I remind myself that our opponents' fans will tell their grandchildren about the day they beat Texas. Our fans and players will tell their grandchildren about all the days we won championships ...

I have one question to the other coaches on this thread...
When KSU lobbed the ball in to Lee with one second remaining on the shot clock, why TF was that pass even allowed? Whomever was guarding the inbounds passer should have been guarding up top only and forcing a bounce or chest pass... coaching staff should have emphasized that.

No shame losing to #12 on their home court but hate to have one slip out of your fingers.

Worst of all, Gaston goes down again

Agreed, but Lee has more size and bulk. Tough match up for Taylor. Shaylee and Shay weren't looking for their offense and we don't set them up much.

Tough loss but we had so many missed opportunities. That said, I can show you in replays how Lee should have had 5 fouls and Jones 2 fewer.

Not sure why we didn’t rely a little more on an outside game nor why we didn’t bring a press in the 4th.

So sad to see Dee go down. So happy to see Amo getting her legs back.

We will win this one in Austin.

Let’s get ready for the other Kansas team.

iMHO, she played OK. Just OK. Think she may be like Charli - very good, good fundamental skills, but not quite at the level of the top players like Cameron Brink or Aaliyah Edwards or a wide body like Lee. An aside: pondering if Lee will do well in the pros - seems a bit slow to me, but she has a smooth shot and seems to be in the right place at the right time. Expect Taylor to do well against smaller posts.

I, also was going to compare Jones to a Collier letdown, but didn't want to incur the wrath of the forum.

I'm looking forward to the next, four game stretch. Perhaps some breathers for everyone involved.

Honestly, although I always hate to lose, I'm not really bummed about this one. My main concern is being able to bounce back against Kansas on Tuesday. That's another team that's going to create some difficult matchups for us with their perimeter quickness and tall rim protector underneath. They are veteran team and they have some good shooters as well..

Ok, I totally missed DeYona going down. Will someone enlighten me?
.08 seconds left on the clock and she was defending an inbound pass and tripped over the player and fell to the ground and immediately grabbed her ankle. Was helped off the court.

As I recall, Baylor's Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox shut down Charli - probably threatened, um, I mean severely coached, by KM. Not much you can do when an equally or more talented player is totally focused on defending ... it happens to the best.

Sorry to see Gaston go down at end of game. It seemed like we lost some poise at the end of the game. We made way too many turnovers, and the refs didn't help us either. I too saw two to three fouls on Lee that were pretty obvious, and not called. It seemed like the Texas Tech refs were at K State today. I thought AMO played great today. And I thought Maddie played really good in spurts, and other times her shots didn't even hit the rim. I didn't know if she tired , or was just rushing her shots.
I hope we play better next week.

Charli actually dominated Ayoka Lee in their last two meetings, 27 pts to 9pts and 21 pts to 5 pts.
Baylor gave Charli hell (Egbo and Smith) because Charli had no help, plus they were more physical than her.

Not sure why Collier was a letdown. Under Vic she got us to the Elite 8 and went #1 in the draft. She was anything but a letdown in my book. Sorry if this post is considered wrath. It wasn’t meant that way.

I thought Charli played well under Vic. Had she stayed another year (or even two with the COVID year) I fully believe she would have developed into something VERY special. Leaving early for the WNBA was a big mistake on her part IMO.

Post-game presser. Vic mentions the inbounds lob to Lee with one second left on the shot clock, saying we didn't even try to tip it away. Again, coach, why were we not defending the inbounds passer to prevent a lob? We should have been forcing a low inbounds pass.

That really depends on what Charli wanted. There are not as many opportunities for female athletes. Maybe she saw her shot and went for it. I too would have loved having her another year.

This is why Rori is so special. She makes her teammates look great! Shay & Shaylee played horrible and so did Gaston and Taylor! Shay &Shaylee are not just good perimeter defenders. They are constantly getting beat! And it frustrates me every time! I love Vic but he has to get maul and Jordana more minutes!! He could have even ran an action for Sarah graves to get off a three or 2. They have shown they are capable. No way shay plays 40 mins and does not score and kept getting beat by Sundell! This is the best game sundell has ever had against us because Rori always had her in check! I love Vic but he has to make some adjustments or we will be out in the second right again! Madison needs help!!

Once again, a starter( Faye) not playing hurt us! Gaston’s lack of energy drives me crazy! She continues to miss bunnies! Taylor has proved that she can’t dominate, so moving forward she needs to come off the bench!

I wish I knew some of what goes on in practice that would explain why Gisella Maul does not get more playing time now. The Shays are playing nearly 40 minutes a game, neither is playing really great defense nor scoring the ball well. Or if maybe she and or Jordana Codio aren't healthy. I trust our coach just not understanding the approach so far.

Our wing players are not capable of attacking off the bounce and creating. They're playing very hard defensively, but I'm sure their legs are tired. That may (or may not) have something to do with their shooting. Like everyone else, I'm wondering why Maul is not being utilized a little more... If for no other reason to try and insert more perimeter shooting and rest Shay and Shaylee some. She also MIGHT have a little more success at attacking with the dribble.

I'm not sure why Codio has not played at all in recent games... When she has played earlier in the season she looked bouncy, and her shot looked really good. Perhaps she is not ready to play the TYPE of minutes we need from her. Maybe they're planning to apply for another redshirt season for both her and Herron, but I think there has to be more than one injury... not sure about that though.
