Texas interviews Karen Aston

To each their own. The Paris twins were a package deal, and only considered schools where both were offered scholarships.

Could there be inside information that no one else knows about? Perhaps. Bottom line is that there isn't a single public report to support that Ashley wasn't offered a scholarship by Texas.

Seattle,

Championships are anomalies at UT in this century, with Bev Kearney's teams saving Texas from a complete shutout in women's sports. Both Baylor and ATM have superior women's programs. For the resources available to her programs, Chris Plonsky is one of the most underperforming women's ADs in the country.

Same for the men this century with Augie and Reese are the only coaches to win more than one championship and Mack Brown has one.

Reese is the only coach whose teams consistenlty compete for NCs, although I surmise that if Mack Brown can keep this staff fogether for four years, the football team might be an annual contender.

Several of the minor sports have been mediocre for years. Dodds and CP don't give a **** and are satisfied to have several teams that rarely compete for conference titles, let alone NCs.

For them the quest for excellence is just talk. Plonsky may be a bit more sensitive to basketball presently considering the decline in interest, attendance and revenues while Baylor and ATM compete for NCs.

If Plonsky was being reviewed strictly on the merits of how her women's athletics programs are doing (and have done recently), not sure she'd be kept around.

But, I believe she holds another title, as well, and has received major kudos for the negotiation of the Longhorn Network. So, based on how much perceived revenue she is given credit for generating to the overall athletic program, not sure anyone cares if the coaches she hires don't pan out.

Honestly, she might be better suited for a marketing / fundraising type role at Texas.

I shudder to even conceive it, but maybe we should bring back lopiano and move plonsky to straight marketing, ball busting, and customer service.

The women's programs have gone from rivaling Stanford for being the best to being average at best. That is on the AD and no one else.Get rid of CP and get a new AD that will clean house. Keep Kearney and dump the rest.

I wouldn't clean house with volleyball or just yet with the women's swimming and golf coaches. The latter haven't been on board for very long and those programs appear to be improving, but sustained achievement is the test.

For some reason, the Texas women's sports aside from volleyball seem to have a tough time recruiting against the top programs. Well, I suppose that's big part of being a good coach, and perhaps our coaches aren't the best at it.

CP has shown that hangs on to mediocre coaches too long.

Branyon I don't disagree with you. Texas should be competing for conference and national championships in ALL sports year in and year out. I was no fan of Goestenkors (duh!) and I certainly would be pumped up if Aston was indeed hired, which appears very likely. She will do more with less. If not, after 5 years, then another change is needed.

Seattle

I like the choice of Aston. Seems risky in a way, but who wouldn't be? Getting a big name coach with a proven track record didn't do the trick. If she is the recruiter she has always been made out to be, that's reason enough to hire her right there. We are all familiar with the ways GG presumably went wrong in recruiting. The messages above arguing that her recruits really weren't that great are super annoying. They were thought by the recruiting services at the time to be outstanding. And the argument that it wasn't Karen and Jody but Jamie Carrie who really deserves the credit for our good team in 2003 really fries me. I would have been even more pumped if we went on a totally different track and had gone for a male or African-American (or even better, an AA male, like Michael Cooper or Travis Mays). Some of the Uconn message board comments, linked in a thread below, were extremely irritating, about the old girl network and implying we need a coach who is married and has children. Not that old thing again.... Please just show me a women's basketball team which has no gay women in some way affiliated. Remember, Rene Portland has been gone for some time now.

How sweet. I have a stalker. A delusional one at that..

Does anyone know how much Aston did or didn't do with recruiting vs. coaching when she worked for Mulkey?

Another example of a poster that has nothing better to do..

Pdx may I suggest therapy for the resignation of your beloved former coach?

LOL

Wow. You seriously need to get a life. I've been to Seattle many times. There's a lot to do when it's not raining. Go out and enjoy some of it.

If you happened to actually read the entire thread, Mooo questioned Aston's ability to recruit, e.g. the Paris twins failure to come to Texas. Aston is a good recruiter and yes, Jody did mess up the twins' recruitment, not Aston as Mooo implied.

But, your long soliloquy enumerating all of the recruits Aston did scout and recommend to Jody just proves the point that she is an excellent recruiter as she was able to identify great players who flew under the radar.

So did they hire her? I still don't understand why the emphasis on just TX recruiting. There are 49 other States. I just want a recruiter that can recruit in any state. UCONN & TN recruit wherever the #1 recruit resides. TX LA CA NY IN AZ FL. If u can recruit u can recruit.
