Texas interviews Karen Aston

Well, not my first choice by a long shot. I knew she had been in town, and heard some other things that were suspicious but nothing that seemed conclusive. Unless this report is dead wrong it seems pretty clear where this is going.

She may do a great job, but it certainly lacks a wow factor, and based on what she has accomplished as a head coach can’t be called a home run at this point. Maybe a double, which isn’t all bad either. I really thought she had burned her Texas bridge when she left…..This would make some people very happy, and some very upset.

I was impressed with the way that her North Texas team played, even if not with the talent. They did significantly improve their record over the prior season. I expect her teams to appear well coached and prepared, especially on the defensive side. We’ll see what she can do with recruiting and how the current players react. I’ll support her and hope for the best.
 
KA definitely has the fire in her belly. I think it could be a really good fit. I remember watching her at practices with Jody in those last years and thinking that she was a big part of successful team play.
 
Well, I would certainly prefer Balcomb, but would support CP and Aston if she's the choice. I really never knew that much about her, just that she was here and focused on recruiting, and left for Baylor. I do recall a poster or two (anyone recall Little 7 - very similar in many ways to a current member of the forum) who tried to imply there was bad blood over her departure, but we've learned since that wasn't the case. Apparently she and Jody are very close, and others in the administration like her as well. I do wonder if it's not quite a done deal yet since the meetings were Tuesday and Wednesday, and yet no announcment came today. Perhaps they're still finalizing things, or perhaps others are being looked at as well. Guess we will find out soon enough.
 
not sure this would be a "home run" unless they are talking about bringing back a former assistant coach who may have been pushed out to get head coaching experience.

Karen certainly does have that "fire in the belly". No question about her HS contacts in Texas and in surrounding states.

Sounds like she may be the front runner. If true, I will be happy to see her return to the 40 Acres and wish her much success.
 
Not enthused, but there were certainly worse applicants to choose from. And for all of the posters who called for a coach who could do more with less, that is Karen. Ive met her on many occasions, and talked to her a recently as 2 months ago at a Pflugerville high game while she was watching one of her recruits, and all she could talk about was how happy she was to be back in Texas. So this job would symbolize such a level of comfort for her. As I previously stated while she was not my first choice, I think she could thrive here and she has a firey personality that would make her someone kids would want to play for. And she has my full support moving forward. She has tools to win now, so her timetable is significantly shorter than GG's was. 3 years
 
I think I've mentioned before how puzzled i was at her "robo-recruiter" moniker as I always found to to appear to be pissed off at the world. I never liked her outward persona. Perhaps though, I misread "fire in the belly" for "pissed off". I remember some of the members of the team tweeting that they were "looking forward to seeing Coach Aston" quite frankly, I was very surprised as she does not seem like able to me at all.

I've suspected for some time now, that she would replace Gayle. I don't see it as a "home run" either, but then "what do I know".
 
She never seemed very personable to me either and always seemed to have a permanent scowl on her face. But I'm not one of those fans that feel I need my *** kissed by the coaching regime or that they need to open up their practices to make me feel part of it all. If they win conference championships, stay in the Top 10 and compete for final fours they can flip me off everytime they walk by and I'll enjoy every minute of it.
 
Hmmm, well seeing as how the former "homerun," e.g. Coach G, was unable to create much success at Texas and was a self-professed burnout, perhaps a less-than-rock star hire will bring better results.

If Aston is selected, I hope those looking for the Geno's, Kim's or Gary Blair hires of the world will give her a chance. We gave GG 5 years and she couldn't make a dent in the Texas HS recruiting landscape. Methinks Aston will hit the ground running and fare well in the state, as she did when she was Jody's assistant.

And those posters who may have found Aston unfriendly, why not give her a chance as head coach? We certainly bent over backwards for GG who was not the most approachable gal on the planet.
 
Wow..15-16 at UNT and 1 conference championship in 4 years at Charlotte. Hopefully she is going to be paid about 1mil a year less than GG. WNIT here we come.
 
I said that perhaps I misread her unfriendliness, that it may have been fire in her belly. Who knows. I'm not opposed to the hire, if it happens, I guess I'll just be in the "wait and see" mode because clearly I know very little about these matters. I'm more than willing to get behind this hire, should it happen.
 
I would like to go on record as saying that if UT hires Aston, it will be a mistake. Nothing personal against her but she will NOT be able to bring us back to championship level, IMO. But lets wait and see how this plays out.
 
I did find it odd that two insiders would leak the information to FOX Sports (a national outlet, and not a local media outlet). Either Plonsky wanted that information leaked, or she is furious right now that someone breached confidence.

Right now, I can only hope that more than one candidate is interviewed in person. You have to be able to "compare" prospects, and giving several a chance to interview in person is a good way to do that.
 
Criminy, the only one in that group that would a great get is Coach Coale and I seriously doubt that she is leaving OU. Like others have said, if that is the group, let's just sign Karen and let her get to work.
 
Actually, I'm beginning to think this whole thing is highly orchestrated. First, a little info is released about Aston interviewing, and then there's a little wait to see what the reaction is. In general most feel the choice in underwhelming, but not highly objectionable, and so they release another list they realize many won't like - thereby creating a little more support, or excitement for Aston. And that's pretty much what happened, with many saying..."if that's the best you can come up with, hire Karen..."

I honestly don't know if any of that is actually what transpired, but let's not play games. And please let's not put out names we all know aren't going to happen. Make an announcement already.

I'm sure her ego is bruised after her million dollar girl didn't pan out as she'd hope. Either that or the interest from targeted elite female coaches is lukewarm. She sure could have had more options if she'd consider a male coach, if true.

I'd be excited with the Aston hire. She may not be brand name right now but she has many traits to become one.
