Horns (12-0, 1-0) will host Texas Tech ( , 0-1) on Saturday in their first Big 12 home game. Horns lead the series 65-29 and are on a four game winning streak after dropping five in a row to Tech. Tech dropped a close game in Lubbock to TCU Wednesday night while Texas was picking up their first road win ever at Morgantown versus WVU. Texas will be looking for their eighth straight home win this season. Tech will be looking to win their first road game this season.
Tech placed three players in double figures in their first Big 12 game. Japreece Dean (# 24, 5-6 Fr. G) scored 22 points in her first Big 12 game. Leashja Grant (# 25, 6-2 Jr. C), a JC transfer, also shined in her first Big 12 game, scoring 21 points and adding nine rebounds. Ivonne Cook Taylor (# 2, 5-8 RS Jr. G), the Lady Raiders leading scorer for the season, added 12 points. Rayven Brooks (# 11, 6-0 Sr. G), Tech’s second leading scorer coming into Big 12 play, connected on only 1-11 from the field against TCU for 2 points. Dean, Dayo Olabode (# 32, 6-2 Soph. F) and Jamie Roe (# 35, 5-10 Sr. F) hit 5 of 12 from BTA. Dean was 3-9, Olabode 1-2 and Roe 1-1. Brooks, Tech’s primary 3pt threat, ended up 0-4 from BTA against TCU. Cook Taylor and Ryann Bowser (# 4, 5-8 Sr. G) entered the TCU game hitting over 45% from BTA and ended up with a combined 0-1 on three’s. At 63.6% from the FT line, Tech was close to their season average of 65.4%. Ionna McKenzie (# 42, 6-2 Soph. C) was 2-2 while Grant made 5 of 9 and Dean was 3-4.
Grant was the leading rebounder with nine. Brooks added seven and Brielle Blaire (# 00, 6-2 Soph. F), a transfer from Virginia Tech after the fall semester last season, added five rebounds. Brooks led the way with 4 assists while Dean, Grant and Bowser each added two assists. Brooks had two blocks while Grant, the team’s leading shotblocker, had one. Brooks also had three steals with Blaire adding two.
Cook Taylor, Brooks, Dean, Grant and Roe started the game. Dean played 35 minutes with Brooks at 34 and Cook Taylor at 32 minutes. Grant played 29 minutes with Roe playing half the game (20 minutes). Blaire, Bowser and Olabode played in the teens. McKenzie and Zuri Sanders (# 30, 6-0 Fr. F) also made brief appearances. A ten player rotation in out of conference games with all playing double digit minutes was shortened to eight with the starters playing extended minutes.
The Horns’ three leading scorers in their first league game were the same three that lead in scoring average for the season but in a slightly different order. Ariel hit for 18 points, Imani had 15 and Brooke added 11 points. Ariel hit on 6 of 8 for 75.0%. Imani connected on 50% of her FGs, 7-14. Brooke also hit 50%, including 2-5 from BTA of her eight shots. Brianna was 3-5 for 60.0% while Kelsey hit on all three of her FGs. Ariel hit 2-3 from BTA as she and Brooke combined for all four treys made by Texas. Other than Ariel’s 4-5 from the FT line, no other Horn made more than 50% from the FT line, including three of our best FT shooters as the Horns connected on 9-19 FTs for 47.4%.
Imani continued to pile on double doubles as she added 14 rebounds to her 15 points. Celina added 7 rebounds while Brianna had five. Horns had four players register assists, led by Celina with five. LaShann had four, Brooke three and Empress two. Texas had seven steals in the game with Ariel and Brianna each with three and Celina adding one. Imani had six of the team’s eight blocks. Ariel and Kelsey had one block apiece.
Imani, Brianna, Brooke, Celina and Empress started the first Big 12 game of the 2015-16 season. Ariel, LaShann and Kelsey made up the main rotation as all eight played at least 14 minutes. Brooke continued to play the most minutes with a season average of 29.8 mpg, which includes 35 minutes versus WVU. Even being in foul trouble, both Imani and Kelsey exceeded their season mpg average and played together for stretches at times.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game:
Texas____________Texas Tech
Imani (6-7)________Grant (6-2)
Brianna (5-9)______Roe (5-10)
Empress (5-9)_____Brooks (6-0)
Celina (5-8)_______Cook Taylor (5-8)
Brooke (5-4)______Dean (5-6)
Both teams used an 8 player rotation in their first Big 12 game although two others for each team played single digit minutes. With their tallest player, 6-4 Jada Terry, sitting out this year as a transfer from Tx A&M, Tech will have a number of 6-2 players in the post. Last year’s freshman sensation, Olabode, who started 25 of 31 games, is now coming off the bench behind Grant. She gives them a strong rebounder and shot blocker off the bench. Dean and Grant will get attention from the Horns after they went off for 22 and 21 pts against TCU. Both were effective in getting to the FT line and Dean made more 3s (3) than the rest of the Lady Raiders combined. The trio of Grant, Olabode and Blair will have their hands full with Imani, Kelsey, Sara and Jordan. The continued emergence of Ariel in her return from injury will put additional pressure on Tech’s perimeter defense and should the rest of the Texas guards, especially Brooke, to get open looks. Horns will run, for Tech, the question will be if Grant, Olabode and Blaire can keep up the pace with the Texas posts.

Both teams basically start off with a post and four guards. Both can go big although Texas’ big is 6-7 and 6-5 or 6-4 and Tech’s is 6-2 and 6-2 or 6-2. Grant gives Tech a dependable inside threat and her bulk will allow her to block off whichever Texas post she is matched up against. Still, Texas should be able to score inside. The trick for the posts of both teams is to stay out of foul trouble. Both teams can get to the FT line. Texas will normally hit closer to 67% of their FTs and not the 47% they shot in the WVU game. Horns should dominate the boards. Both teams depend on their guards to be heavily involved in rebounding. Neither team is dependent on the 3pt shot with about three quarters of shot attempts coming inside the arc. With both teams liking to run, this could be a track meet, entertaining for fans but hard on the players. Although with both teams able to go at least 10 deep, fatigue might not be that big a factor.
Game day is Saturday, Jan. 02, 2016 (gonna have to get used to writing 2016) at 7 PM. The game will be on the LHN and 104.9 FM the Horn. Should be a bit chilly (high to mid 30s) but forecast is for clear skies.
