Horns (12-0, 1-0) will host Texas Tech ( , 0-1) on Saturday in their first Big 12 home game. Horns lead the series 65-29 and are on a four game winning streak after dropping five in a row to Tech. Tech dropped a close game in Lubbock to TCU Wednesday night while Texas was picking up their first road win ever at Morgantown versus WVU. Texas will be looking for their eighth straight home win this season. Tech will be looking to win their first road game this season.

Tech placed three players in double figures in their first Big 12 game. Japreece Dean (# 24, 5-6 Fr. G) scored 22 points in her first Big 12 game. Leashja Grant (# 25, 6-2 Jr. C), a JC transfer, also shined in her first Big 12 game, scoring 21 points and adding nine rebounds. Ivonne Cook Taylor (# 2, 5-8 RS Jr. G), the Lady Raiders leading scorer for the season, added 12 points. Rayven Brooks (# 11, 6-0 Sr. G), Tech’s second leading scorer coming into Big 12 play, connected on only 1-11 from the field against TCU for 2 points. Dean, Dayo Olabode (# 32, 6-2 Soph. F) and Jamie Roe (# 35, 5-10 Sr. F) hit 5 of 12 from BTA. Dean was 3-9, Olabode 1-2 and Roe 1-1. Brooks, Tech’s primary 3pt threat, ended up 0-4 from BTA against TCU. Cook Taylor and Ryann Bowser (# 4, 5-8 Sr. G) entered the TCU game hitting over 45% from BTA and ended up with a combined 0-1 on three’s. At 63.6% from the FT line, Tech was close to their season average of 65.4%. Ionna McKenzie (# 42, 6-2 Soph. C) was 2-2 while Grant made 5 of 9 and Dean was 3-4.

Grant was the leading rebounder with nine. Brooks added seven and Brielle Blaire (# 00, 6-2 Soph. F), a transfer from Virginia Tech after the fall semester last season, added five rebounds. Brooks led the way with 4 assists while Dean, Grant and Bowser each added two assists. Brooks had two blocks while Grant, the team’s leading shotblocker, had one. Brooks also had three steals with Blaire adding two.

Cook Taylor, Brooks, Dean, Grant and Roe started the game. Dean played 35 minutes with Brooks at 34 and Cook Taylor at 32 minutes. Grant played 29 minutes with Roe playing half the game (20 minutes). Blaire, Bowser and Olabode played in the teens. McKenzie and Zuri Sanders (# 30, 6-0 Fr. F) also made brief appearances. A ten player rotation in out of conference games with all playing double digit minutes was shortened to eight with the starters playing extended minutes.

The Horns’ three leading scorers in their first league game were the same three that lead in scoring average for the season but in a slightly different order. Ariel hit for 18 points, Imani had 15 and Brooke added 11 points. Ariel hit on 6 of 8 for 75.0%. Imani connected on 50% of her FGs, 7-14. Brooke also hit 50%, including 2-5 from BTA of her eight shots. Brianna was 3-5 for 60.0% while Kelsey hit on all three of her FGs. Ariel hit 2-3 from BTA as she and Brooke combined for all four treys made by Texas. Other than Ariel’s 4-5 from the FT line, no other Horn made more than 50% from the FT line, including three of our best FT shooters as the Horns connected on 9-19 FTs for 47.4%.

Imani continued to pile on double doubles as she added 14 rebounds to her 15 points. Celina added 7 rebounds while Brianna had five. Horns had four players register assists, led by Celina with five. LaShann had four, Brooke three and Empress two. Texas had seven steals in the game with Ariel and Brianna each with three and Celina adding one. Imani had six of the team’s eight blocks. Ariel and Kelsey had one block apiece.

Imani, Brianna, Brooke, Celina and Empress started the first Big 12 game of the 2015-16 season. Ariel, LaShann and Kelsey made up the main rotation as all eight played at least 14 minutes. Brooke continued to play the most minutes with a season average of 29.8 mpg, which includes 35 minutes versus WVU. Even being in foul trouble, both Imani and Kelsey exceeded their season mpg average and played together for stretches at times.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game:

Texas____________Texas Tech
Imani (6-7)________Grant (6-2)
Brianna (5-9)______Roe (5-10)
Empress (5-9)_____Brooks (6-0)
Celina (5-8)_______Cook Taylor (5-8)
Brooke (5-4)______Dean (5-6)

Both teams used an 8 player rotation in their first Big 12 game although two others for each team played single digit minutes. With their tallest player, 6-4 Jada Terry, sitting out this year as a transfer from Tx A&M, Tech will have a number of 6-2 players in the post. Last year’s freshman sensation, Olabode, who started 25 of 31 games, is now coming off the bench behind Grant. She gives them a strong rebounder and shot blocker off the bench. Dean and Grant will get attention from the Horns after they went off for 22 and 21 pts against TCU. Both were effective in getting to the FT line and Dean made more 3s (3) than the rest of the Lady Raiders combined. The trio of Grant, Olabode and Blair will have their hands full with Imani, Kelsey, Sara and Jordan. The continued emergence of Ariel in her return from injury will put additional pressure on Tech’s perimeter defense and should the rest of the Texas guards, especially Brooke, to get open looks. Horns will run, for Tech, the question will be if Grant, Olabode and Blaire can keep up the pace with the Texas posts.

Both teams basically start off with a post and four guards. Both can go big although Texas’ big is 6-7 and 6-5 or 6-4 and Tech’s is 6-2 and 6-2 or 6-2. Grant gives Tech a dependable inside threat and her bulk will allow her to block off whichever Texas post she is matched up against. Still, Texas should be able to score inside. The trick for the posts of both teams is to stay out of foul trouble. Both teams can get to the FT line. Texas will normally hit closer to 67% of their FTs and not the 47% they shot in the WVU game. Horns should dominate the boards. Both teams depend on their guards to be heavily involved in rebounding. Neither team is dependent on the 3pt shot with about three quarters of shot attempts coming inside the arc. With both teams liking to run, this could be a track meet, entertaining for fans but hard on the players. Although with both teams able to go at least 10 deep, fatigue might not be that big a factor.

Game day is Saturday, Jan. 02, 2016 (gonna have to get used to writing 2016) at 7 PM. The game will be on the LHN and 104.9 FM the Horn. Should be a bit chilly (high to mid 30s) but forecast is for clear skies.

finally got a chance to watch the Tech vs TCU game replay. I was curious because at least one poster was saying that Tech started to stall in the middle of the third quarter and thus lost the game. I have to admit I never saw Tech try to slow the game down, just start missing shots they had made earlier.

what I saw from the middle of the third quarter was TCU start making shots and Tech start missing, including at least four wide open layups that would have gone a long way towards helping them win. Add in some poor passing leading to picks and easy layups and two bumps that caused Tech to lose the ball and resulted in easy TCU layups and Tech did not win the game. It didn't help Tech that their two leading scorers shot so poorly most of the game.

Dean is going to be another outstanding PG in the league. Seems like every team has an outstanding PG, most of whom are quite capable of scoring as well. Count Tech's Dean and TCU's Alix among those.

Enjoyable preview on Texassports, I think. Good quotes from Aston, Atkins, and Rodrigo. Before the season started, I thought this might be a "step backwards" year for Tech with the Lady Raiders poised for a big step or two forward next year when 3 transfer players become eligible, and Tech brings in a pretty good looking freshman class. This year, Japreece Dean, from nearby Cedar Park, looks solid at the pg position. As I followed the preseason, I thought Tech might be better than expected. Of course, they played no ranked teams and played a non-challenging schedule altogether. Now I am very uncertain about how Tech will fare in conference. I still think Tech has much more offensive potential this year. Last year, they were very dependent on a couple of players to score.

I am semi-watching the Tech-TCU game now. In the second part of the third quarter , I've just seen the TCU guards successfully take the ball inside on 3 straight possessions. Meanwhile, Tech has missed a lay-up and taken a perhaps ill-advised 3-point shot that turned into easy points for TCU on the miss.

On to the 4th quarter. TCU applied a little pressure and Tech just wilted.

We know that the Horns are going to press. The only question is how much. Gotta wonder if Tech will work on breaking the press. Cuz, just like teams want to zone us due to our poor outside shooting last season, opponents will look at how porrly Tech handled TCU's press in the fourth quarter and will press them until they prove they can handle it.

looks like the weather forecast has changed to include a 50% of rain per the tv weatherpeople.

Strange that it is Saturday morning and there is nothing in the Lubbock paper about the Lady Raiders' game this evening with Texas. The men's game preview was up on Friday. Kinda sad to see the lack of coverage in Lubbock for what used to be one of the better supported programs nationally.

nice to see the Horns get some props during the halftime of the Maryland-Ohio State game. :hookem:

just caught the tail end of as I switched back. They were talking about Texas and their talented and deep frontcourt.

strange to be watching this at home instead of from the stands. Six of Tech's 15 shots have been from BTA. They have connected on two.

36-29 Horns at the half. Tech is 5-12 from BTA. Four players have connected from BTA and that doesn't include Roe and Dean. Dean is 0-3. after lighting it up from BTA in the TCU game.

Imani (9) and Kelsey (11) have 20 for Texas. Tech's best post inside, Grant, has three fouls.

We keep sliding behind the screener, leaving the shooter a clear shot from BTA. They only need a half second. Either we get quicker going behind the screener or we slide in front of the screener to deny that open look.

Horns have held Tech without a 3pter in the third quarter. Imani (19) and Kelsey (13) leading the Horns tonight.

I wish we'd see more Higgs and less Sanders. (I like Sanders a lot...who doesn't? But, Higgs is a gamer!)

That might be because Higgs does not know the plays. They have given her ample time and yes she is a scrapper, but the chances of her making a driving in layup with 2-3 girls on her is 50/50. Maybe Aston thinks it is time to give her an ultimatum that she LEARN the plays as well as her teammates do. She works hard but you never know what you're going to get with her.

Sweet win. Tech played with a lot of heart but Texas is just simply better. Can't think that Tech won't win some games. Dean may be the FOY in the conference. She is certainly the best frosh I have seen so far.

Imani had a double double as is becoming expected from her. Brianna missed several bunnies, especially at the start, to just miss a double double with 7 pts and 10 rebs. Kelsey had 13 pts and 8 rebs. Ariel ended up with 11 pts. Empress was the fourth Horn in double figures with 14 pts.

Horns shot better from the FT line, canning 20-27 for 74.1%.

Nice win. Time to get ready for ISU on Wed. :hookem:

Nice win!!! I still think we make it harder than it should be. Aston subs too much and too early! She has to give the starters a chance to get flowing offensively. It may catch up with us when we face better competition in the conference. Kelsey & Imani are both playing really well right now. Empress still doesn't do it for me, she seems to take bad shots and play out of control for a senior. I am really glad Ariel is back, she gives us that scoring wing that we so desperately needed. This team is headed in the right direction but there is still a lot more we have to clean up to be able to compete with UCONN, ND, Baylor and Maryland. Our post players have to step out on the hedge to help the guards defend the 3 ball, if not we are going to get killed by teams that shoot the 3 ball well. Our players also need to be mindful of shot selections, Bri and Emp appear to be going for theirs just a little too much for me. Brooke never got into any kind of rhythm tonight but I like how she plays when she is on the floor with Celina. Celina is continuing to play solid at the PG and brings some floor leadership to this team. Tasia did well with her minutes tonight.... it was a solid conference win!

Good win! They need to continue to improve and get better. We know what ISU is going to try to do, so they need to be ready.

What's the deal with Tech wearing short shorts? One player had tighty short shorts. Looked kind of strange but maybe it's their new fashion statement.

Impressed with Dean the first two games of Big 12 play. She ate Brooke's lunch tonight. Have to say, her skill set is completely different from any of our guards. She's not the biggest guard, but she plays with confidence and composure. Really hope Alecia Sutton brings a similar skill set next season.

I'm sure that will be a regular thing for her every time she plays against Texas. There is something about players playing against their home town or area teams.

She didn't have short shorts on - she had them pulled way up - notice you can see the white elastic around her waist because she had them pulled up so high she folded over the waist band. Then she had the bottoms tucked up in those spanx things they wear under their shorts. It sure looked like the old timey short shorts, but it wasn't.

I actually think the liberal subbing has been one of our strengths thus far. Most teams don't use an 11 or 12 player rotation because they don't have the depth, and more specifically the talent to do so. And it makes us very difficult to play against, and prepare for. I love how every game we see different players, and combinations, step up.
