Texas got hosed

When you clearly have the better talent and should have run the other team out of the gym, then yeah, I expect them to win by at least 4-5 points and not leave it in the hands of the refs.

The refs not only didn't count to 5 but he also sped up his counting time. I understand that these guys can't do it to the split second, but he missed very bad. So I took a stop watch and did it 10 times by the video from the very point that the ball hit in Joseph's hands to the very point that he calls time out and eight times I got 4.2 seconds and two times I got 4.3 seconds. This is not the time the ref started counting, but the time the ball hit in Joseph's hands. It was .6 seconds later he started counting after releasing the ball to Joseph.

To me we played like crap and I felt like we out matched Arizona in size. They hit the 3 pointers really well in the first half but they dropped off in the second half. Not sure if they played bad or we made them look like that. Either way when the game is that close neither team did enough to win. So to say we didn't earn it could be said about Arizona as well. My problem is that one team had to have earned it a fraction more than the other and that is the team that deserved it and no ref should decide that. It's unfortunate if that ref just made a simple mistake by thinking he counted to 5.5 when he blew his whistle. But for him to put on a show when making the call like he did tells me he was trying to be a part of the story. It's obvious it was a bad call.

Much walilng and moaning about the last 15 seconds of the game, but I agree with Sangre about this. The game was lost long before then.

This game was lost during a stretch of about 10 minutes during the first half when Texas was buidling a lead and promptly entered a spasm of turnovers including EIGHT STEALS given up. The Horns had double figure TOs in the first half. We had three players with more turnovers than points or rebounds. They buried themselves.

That's not coaching, that represents the players' lack of individual mental preparation for the game.

As for the last 15 seconds, plenty of bad luck and not entirely bonehead plays.

First, it is almost certain that Barnes instructed the players to call timeout in order that they could get the ball into Brown's hands to close out the game. Makes sense. He was hot, UA could not stop him and he was drawing fouls with ease.

Second, even without instructions, Hamiltion's TO was not entirely mistaken, just premature. His position when he grabbed the ball did not afford him a great court view and perhaps recognizing that he is one of the team's leaders in TOs game in and game out, he took the cautious route. He is not a person Texas wants handling the ball. Just about every poster on this subject ignores the fact that Hamilton coughs the ball up regularly.

The inbounds play. Joseph did the right thing. The referee clearly blew the call. The problem was Joseph did not get the help he needed. That is coaching and a failure of the other players. The referee's theatrics on the call were inexcusable and evidence a planned call or recognition that he knew he blew it. I have never seen a quick 5 second call like that in a close game. Generally, the referees are liberal with the count in order to avoid the bad call.

Brown's last shot. Again, it is almost certain that Barnes told everyone on the team that Brown would take the last shot. I am not a fan of walking the ball up court with 10 seconds left in the game because it negates the chance for an OB, but on the other hand Texas was not running a play and it was Brown's game to win or lose. Frankly, I wish he would have feinted the drive and pulled up for a 22 footer.

As for the last shot. Brown clearly was fouled, not lightly, but hammered to the floor. This was an inexcusable no call. Again, I would have preferred that he pull up for the jumper, but he is an aggressive, competitive player and is supremely confident.

Rex - I think that is a reasonable explanation when it happens every once in a while. Barnes-led teams are starting to make a habit of this.

I don't believe the game was lost at any point until the final horn, but Texas certainly contributed to their own demise throughout the mistake filled game. By the same token, Arizona gave Texas ample opportunities to stay in the game with their own less than stellar play.

Rex - you have to play the hand you are dealt. I could complain about the seeding (yes, we got screwed) and the blown 5-second call (ditto there), but it took coaching to put us in those situations. Losses to Nebraska, Colorado, and K State at the end of the year did not sit well with the committee, so they decided to send a message. At the end of the day, the team's efforts in those games has to be on Barnes. Barnes could not adjust to a great defensive scheme on TT and a cold shooting Hamilton in the 1st half (despite his offense of "give the ball to J'Covan" in the 2nd half) and that is on him.

Since we are all about examples here, how about these:

2010 - loss to Wake Forest in 1st round (at one point ranked #1 in the country)

2007 - lost to USC in 2nd round by 20 points (with Kevin Durant and DJ Augustine)

2005 - lost to Nevada in the 1st round

I can go back further but I don't really want or need to. I defer to the link by mr. pringles which seems to sum up Barnes' tournament success (or non-success).

We put ourselves in a position where we had five seconds to inbound or call timeout, adjust and try again. Without the poor call the probability is very high that we get the ball in the second time, even if we need to lob it deep. Then they foul...

We could have had a turnover or got fouled and missed both shots and lost on a three pointer at the buzzer, but without that blown call we more than likely win that game.

That ref decided he wanted a premature 5 second call or he lost count. Inexcusable mistake at this level.

Yes the officiating was poor. Yes we at least deserved a foul call on the last drive (especially when Brown went up and was knocked all over the place on his layup attempt). No I don't think we lost simply because of officiating. We played a terrible first half.

I'm beginning to wonder more and more every year if Barnes can get it done. He is a stand up person and a great recruiter but he has a track record of not making it very far into the tourney with stellar talent. Maybe it is time for a change. Let the bashing against me begin.

Really? The refs cost us the game? Just sounds like whining to me.

As well as ignoring all the boneheaded mistakes made during the other 39:44 of the game.

The ref made a mistake, but that's not something you can control. What you can control is discipline on offense, ot taking dumb shots, not turning the ball over 10 times in the first half, hitting your free throws... And not calling a timeout when you're up by 2 with only seconds left in the game and your best free-throw shooter has the ball in hand.

But go ahead and blame it on the ref if it makes you feel better.

Thank you Kaiser...I completely agree. I was sick to my stomach the entire first half.

A team like this one should NOT have to rely on good officiating to decide a game...period. We should have been at least 5-6 points ahead if not more if we played the way we were playing earlier in the year. I have no idea what caused the freakishly weird meltdown of the last month or so but I wonder if it is still lingering...

The problem is the body of work over the past five years and which direction the trend arrow points. I say this should be a Sweet 16 program; if not every year then at least every other year. And to say we were hosed by the committee is a bit shaky because last years collapse was fresh on everyone's mind and it appeared we were doing it again. In the end the lack of confidence and respect for our program is on Barnes...

Don't fire him.... but it is what it is and as far as I'm concerned I have the same view of our program as the committee....

You have to be able to close out close games. Texas didn't do a good job of that. To me the most critical moment was when Hamilton grabbed the rebound when we had the lead. Why call timeout with the ball in your best offensive player's hands and the lead? Dumb. Atleast not smart. Now they have to try and get it in against pressure and could not. And when you are inbounding in that situation, I would tell my players to have a 3 count in their head. If they can't get it in by then, call timeout. Don't give the ref a chance to quick count you. Lastly, JB played a whale of a game, but I would have told him to try and get the shot up with atleast a couple seconds left, so that we have a chance for a put back. Those are 3 errors that smart teams do not make.

Agree with Big Vegas. It is bad to make a critical mistake, but I can't stand not owning up to it.

Just making up **** about no TO before the 5 count, and other people making up **** about no TO after 4 seconds. Beyond lame...

I'm not in favor of replacing Barnes. He has elevated the profile of Texas if only due to Kevin Durant. And we do at least make the Dance every year, if seldom survive the first weekend. Tom Penders only had two Sweet Sixteens. Barnes has had 4 (I believe). Still the Big 12 conference is a much easier conference to recruit to then was the SWC.

My thoughts exactly Aces Full.

You hit all points right on.

"you have to close out close games" and we did not do a good job.

I liked the idea of Hamilton calling TO. If he would have done that then 90%+ we win.
