Texas (16-7, 5-4) takes a five game conference winning streak into Waco Saturday. Baylor (22-1, 9-0) has not lost a home game this season, going 4-0 in conference and 15-0 overall. The last time they lost a home was on 03/07/2010 to Texas, 70-54. That completed a season sweep for the Longhorns over the Lady Bears for the 2009-10 season since the Horns won in Austin on 01/31/2010 by a score of 61-50. Baylor, with a win in Austin this season, will be looking to complete the sweep of the series this year with a win on their home court.

Brittney Griner (# 42, 6-8 Soph. P) leads the Lady Bears in conference scoring with a 22.8 ppg average. The other Lady Bear in double figures at 14.8 ppg is Odyssey Sims (# 2, 5-9 Fr. G). Destiny Williams (# 10, 6-1 RS Soph. F/P) adds 9.9 ppg in conference play. Melissa Jones (# 5, 5-11 Sr. G) is also just off double figures with an average of 8.6 ppg. About one of every five shot attempts by Baylor is a 3pter. Sims leads a trio of Lady Bears who have attempted at least 10 3s in Big 12 games: Sims (15-38, 39.5%), Jones (6-17, 35.3%) and Kimetria Hayden (# 1, 6-0 Soph. G, 8-18, 44.4%). As a team, Baylor tops the Big 12 in FT % at 76.8%. Four of the five starters make over 80% of their FTs, led by Jones’ 86.2%. The fifth starter, Griner, has gotten to the FT line more than twice than any other player (63-81) and is converting at a very impressive 77.8%. Griner also leads in rebounds at 8.7 rpg while Jones (6.9 rpg) and Williams (6.8 rpg) are solid rebounders. Jones tops the Lady Bears with 42 assists while PG Sims has 27 assists. Griner has 36 blocks while Brooklyn Pope (# 32, 6-1 RS Soph. F/P) has 11. Jones, Hayden and Sims are one, two and three in steals with 20, 13 and 11 steals, respectively.
The Lady Bears have 14 players on the roster with one, Shanay Washington, sitting out the season due to an injury. Griner, Sims, Jones, and Hayden have started all nine league games. Pope started the first two games before Williams took over that starting spot. Seven players have played in all nine league games to date. Jordan Madden (# 3, 6-0 Soph. G) is that seventh player. Terran Condrey (# 20, 5-7 Jr. G) has played in eight Big 12 games. Of the remaining five players, none has played in more than six games nor averages more than 6.2 minutes per game. Jones, Griner and Sims all average just over 33 mpg.
Horns have two players with double digit scoring averages: Chassidy at 21.6 ppg and Kat at 11.3 ppg. Two others are just under double digits: Ashleigh at 9.6 ppg and Yvonne at 9.1 ppg. Twenty eight per cent of FGs attempted by Texas are 3s. Horns have five players that have taken at least 10 3s in league play. Chassidy (26-58, 44.8%) and Kat (16-42, 38.3%) are the top shooters from BTA. Yvonne (8-17, 47.1%) is the most accurate 3pt shooter for Texas. Chassidy has gotten to the FT line twice as often as any other Horn. She (40-47, 85.1%) and Kat (14-16, 87.5%) are the only Horns over 80%. Kristen (14-20, 70.0%) is third in making FTs. Kat’s 8.3 rpg leads the squad with three others averaging over 5 rpg. Ashleigh has 36 assists to lead three other Horns with at least 16 assists. Ashley has 31 blocks to lead the team while Kristen is in second place with 8 blocks. Three Horns have double digit steals, led by Ashleigh’s 13.
The Horns’ lineup seems to change from game to game. The three players that have started all nine league games are Chassidy, Kat, and Ashleigh. Kristen and Yvonne have 5 and 6 starts, respectively and have started the last few games. Ashley and Chelsea have started five and two games, respectively. All have played in the nine league games. Tiffany has also logged minutes in all the Big 12 games so far. The Horns have three players averaging between 33 and 35 mpg: Chassidy, Kat and Ashleigh.Projected starting lineups based on the last game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ashley start but she has been doing very well coming off the bench.

Texas BU
Kat (6-2) Williams (6-1)
Kristen (6-3) Griner (6-8)
Yvonne (5-7) Sims (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Jones (5-11)
Ashleigh (5-8) Hayden (6-0) [/pre]
Last time these two teams played, Baylor shut out Kat, who went 0-7 from the field and did not get to the FT line. This after a year where she averaged 3.5 of 7.5 FGs, 1.5 of 4 3s, and 2-2 FTs a game in the Horns sweep of the series. Chassidy, Yvonne and Ashleigh all ended up in double figures. Baylor countered primarily with Griner and Sims. Where the Horns lost the game was at the FT line as Griner and Sims went 16-22 compared to Texas’ 13-18 as a team. Baylor ended up 26-36 FTs, exactly twice as many as Texas had in both made and attempted. Ashley needs to stay out of foul trouble against Griner. Anne Marie was able to hold position against Griner but could not bother her shot as well as Ashley did. Horns will look to slow down Griner and Sims. Williams did some damage on assists from Griner. Horns will need to be aware of that to keep Williams or another Lady Bear getting an easy basket when Griner is doubled. Keeping Sims from penetrating and finishing or dishing to an open 3pt shooter will be difficult. But how much success the Horns have with this could go a long way to how this game ends up. Sims’ ability to shoot the 3 and to penetrate really puts a lot of pressure on the player guarding her.

While Baylor holds the edge in most categories, Texas is first in 3pt FG%. They take around 18 3s a game and that is unlikely to change with Chassidy, Kat, and Yvonne all hitting over 38% from BTA. Kristen, Ashley and Anne Marie added 12 pts in the last game against Baylor. With the increased ability to score they have shown in the past few games, they could make a difference in this game. The rebound battle should be fierce as guards from both teams crash the boards. Horns will need to play smart to keep from sending Baylor to the line. If they can keep Baylor to their usual 18-20 FTs rather than the 36 they got in the last game in Austin, Horns will have a better chance to pull off another streak breaker. The previous game was close until 40 seconds when Texas missed a couple of shots and Baylor made two FTs and a couple of FGs to put the game away.
This will be a tough game with most likely a sold out crowd wearing Green and Gold pulling for the Lady Bears. Burnt Orange is likely to be scarce in the crowd. But other than OSU with 6-6 McIntyre, the Horns are probably the only team that can play Griner one on one for any appreciable amount of time and do it effectively. Still, I would expect double teams on Griner at times along with a zone occasionally.
For whatever reason, I feel pretty good about this game.
