Texas Basketball Practice Notes: Injury Update, Takeaways, Scrimmage Details from SI

Every jump shot we take seems WAY overconfident. Everything is contested.

I really like the energy from Larry and Kent, but they're going to need to make a dent on the stat sheet in order to have more of an impact.

Weaver finally started playing his game these last couple possessions. To me, it seems that Pope is the one who needs some refinement compared to Larry and Weaver.

Based on what I saw the last couple seasons from Mark, he's going to make everyone else look slow. That'll help stretch the opponents later in the year.

Kent has a hideous shot and shouldn't be jacking it up. Save those for Kaluma.

Our down low D is just bad.

Agree on Larry and Weaver. Yeah, Pope looks behind those two.

Welp, at least most of our other nonconference games will be more of a cakewalk, save for NC State and UConn.

Johnson is the real deal, If he gets hurt, we're ******.

We are very weak on D right now. When Shedrick took the charge, that might have been the only physical play we made underneath all night. We're obviously not going to play Onyema. It looks like Kaluma put on weight in order to prep for his role, but that was never his game the last 3 years.

When Mark returns, there's going to be a weird guard dynamic. It looks like Larry and Weaver were playing the same role tonight, which kind of bodes well if we're not going to put another big out there with Shedrick. I just don't know how you keep Johnson from getting his minutes if he's given free reign like tonight. Sans injury, I think Terry should go with a lineup of:
Larry
Weaver
Mark
Johnson
Shedrick

But I think that's mostly because I watched Kaluma get outmatched at every opportunity on defense tonight and maybe he can improve.

Larry
Weaver
Mark
Johnson
Shedrick
This smallish lineup looks pretty good. It may be tough to go against some of the teams with 2 big strong bangers down low. Winning the rebounding battle (or not losing it by much) may be a key. We've got to hit more of those threes.

Through all the fog, one thing remains clear: this is a well-coached team.

The beginning of the game ohio state shot really well and Texas couldn't hit the side of a barn. I think ohio state had 10 3pts for their first 38 points. Texas didn't look like a team that had played together at all.

Trey Johnson looked really good.

This was really just a warm-up to see what sort of stuff we've got, to make adjustments going forward, and go from there. Think of it as an exhibition game.

But it wasn't, we are 0-1. But not to worry, we have mighty Houston Christian coming to the Mood tonight.
A certain victory. Another warm up game. Basically a scrimmage. Will be interesting to see if we hit 3s. Will Larry and Weaver keep driving like stars? Can Pope get in sync with the rest of the backcourt? Last game (scrimmage/warm up), Shedrick started slow and came on in the 2nd half.

28 points for Tre J.

90-59 final.

Mack didn't play again (ankle)

Freshman guard Tre Johnson scored 28 points and No. 19 Texas defeated Houston Christian 90-59 on Friday night.

Arthur Kaluma added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Longhorns (1-1), who began pulling away with a 15-0 run that started late in the first half.

Chendall Weaver had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Kadin Shedrick
finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Sounds like one team played an exhibition game and the other team didn’t.
