Texas (11-0) starts off Big 12 play with a trip to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers (11-2). WVU leads the series 5-3. WVU and Texas have met seven times in league play with each winning three times at home. WVU has won both games played on a neutral court, including the first time they faced off in an NCAA playoff game on 03/17/2012. The two have split home games every year WVU has been in the league. Texas will be seeking the first road game win by either team in their Big 12 series. Horns have yet to lose this season while WVU has won nine in a row. One of those two streaks will end Wednesday night.
The WVU Mountaineers have three players averaging double digits in scoring. Topping the list is Bria Holmes (# 23, 6-1 Sr. G) at 17.5 ppg. Second is Teana Muldrow (# 11, 6-1 Soph. F) who averages 11.2 ppg off the bench. The third leading scorer is Lanay Montgomery (# 15, 6-5 Jr. C) who adds 10.8 ppg. Katrina Pardee (# 22. 5-9 Fr. G) from Vista Ridge HS in Cedar Park, TX, is averaging 8.8 ppg, fourth best on the team. The Austin area player has started all 13 games for WVU. Holmes (87-160; 54.4%), Muldrow (55-117; 47.0%) and Pardee (41-120; 34.2%) have combined to take just over half of WVU’s 790 FG attempts. Montgomery (55-84; 65.5%) has the highest FG% for WVU but averages only 6.5 shots a game although she did go 9-9 in Monday’s game on her way to 21 pts. Arielle Roberson (# 32. 6-1 Sr. F) from San Antonio Wagner is a grad student who played her undergrad years and graduated from Colorado. Her shooting percentage of 62.2% (28-45) is second on the team. Frosh Pardee (22-76; 28.9%) and Holmes (15-46; 32.6%) combine to take 51% of WVU’s 3pt attempts coming into the Texas game. Roberson (6-11; 54.5%), Alexis Brewer (# 2, 5-9 Fr. G; 11-28; 39.3%) and Muldrow (11-30; 36.7%) are other 3pt threats the Horns will need to be aware of. Holmes (39-55; 70.9%) leads the team in FTs made and attempted. Montgomery (30-47; 63.8%) is second in both categories. Pardee at 76.9% (10-13) has the team’s highest FT percentage aside from a player that has made both of hers.
Montgomery averages 9.3 rpg while Muldrow (6.5 rpg) and Roberson (5.2 rpg) provided strong support on the boards. Holmes leads WVU with 46 assists while Olivia Seggie (# 3, 5-3 Fr. G) has 40 in half as many minutes per game. Muldrow and Jessica Morton (# 21, 5-10 Sr. G) each has 21 assists. Tynice Martin (# 5, 5-10 Fr. G) adds 20 assists and Pardee 19. Montgomery leads the team and the Big 12 with 39 blocks. Three others have between 8 and 9 blocks each. Four players have reached double digits in steals: Muldrow (28), Holmes (16) and Montgomery and Roberson with 11 apiece.
Holmes, Pardee, Montgomery and Roberson have started all 13 games this season for the Mountaineers. After sitting out the first semester due to transferring from Florida State, Chania Ray (# 12, 5-8 Soph. G) has started the last three games. Morton with 9 starts and Seggie with one start split the previous ten starts at that fifth position. Seven players have seen action in all 13 games with all averaging minutes in double figures. Brewer has played in 12 games and Morton in 11. Both also average in double digit minutes. Holmes averages the most mpg at 30.3 mpg with Ray in three games averaging 27.3 mpg. Montgomery averages 25.2 mpg. 6-4 Kayla Montgomery (# 4, Sr. F), no relation to Lanay, has yet to play this season. Nor has 6-6 Fr. F Marlena Schmidt (# 45). Have to wonder if they will see action against the Texas front line.
Horns are led in scoring by Brooke (12.1 ppg) and Imani (11.7 ppg). Three others are just off double digit scoring: LaShann (9.5 ppg), Brianna (9.1 ppg) and Ariel (8.5 ppg). Ariel played in only her second game on Sunday. She and LaShann have come off the bench in most games. Our top three scorers should hit triple digit FG attempts against the Mountaineers. LaShann (40-99; 40.4%); Brooke (45-95; 47.4%) and Imani (51-95; 53.7%) have been taken just under half of the FGs attempted by the Horns. Brianna (42-77; 54.5%) and Empress (25-77; 32.5%) rank third in FG attempts. Kelsey (33-61; 54.1%) and Sara (14-25; 56.0%) join Imani and Brianna in making over 50% from the field. Brooke (18-48; 27.5%), Empress (7-28; 25.0%) and Celina (11-25; 44.0%) are the main 3pt threats for the Horns. Our posts have done well taking their shots from BTA as Imani (2-4), Brianna (3-6) and Jordan (1-1) have combined for 6-11 from BTA. Horns can put nine players that are either perfect from the FT line or making no less than 70% from there. Leading the way are Imani (25-35; 71.4%) and Brooke (25-3.; 83.3%). LaShann has the most FT attempts (21-37; 56.8%) while Ariel (6-6) and Olamide (2-2) are perfect.
Imani entered the season with 714 total rebounds, She needs 286 to reach 1000 rebounds. Her current rebounding average of 8.5 rpg has added 93 rebounds to her total. She will need to hit that average over the 18 Big 12 games and five additional playoff games to reach 1000 career rebounds. Kelsey is second in rebounding at 5.2 rpg while LaShann is third with 5.0 rpg. Three players have reached at least 30 assists for the season, led by Empress with 33. Celina is second with 32 and Brooke has 30. Imani has almost half of the team’s 55 blocks with 26. Kelsey has ten blocks to rank second in this category. Every player but one has at least one block, including Olamide who has two blocks in the five games she has played in. The top four scorers for the Horns have the top four numbers in steals: Brooke (17), Imani (12), LaShann (22) and Brianna (12). Celina ranks fifth with 9 steals. Kinda of nice when four of your starters are among the top five in steals and the leader comes off the bench. LaShann’s average of two steals a game ranks her sixth overall in the conference.
The projected starting lineup for the Horns will be looking to improve to 8-0 this season against WVU. Seven players have at least one start this season. With the return of Ariel two games ago, 13 of the 14 players on the roster have played this season. Diani is still waiting to be cleared to play. Khaléann is redshirting this year. Brooke’s 29.3 mpg leads five other players that average 20 plus minutes a game. Four others average in double digits in mpg. Eight players have played in all 11 games with Brady playing in 10 and Ariel in two. The rotation usually runs at least ten deep although it can go as many as 13.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game:
Texas____________West Virginia
Imani (6-7)__________Montgomery (6-5)
Brianna (5-9)________Pardee (5-9)
Empress (5-9)_______Holmes (6-1)
Celina (5-8)_________Roberson (6-1)
Brooke (5-4)________Ray (5-8)
I have to give Texas the advantage in the post matchup simply due to numbers. Montgomery will have to play 30+ minutes and stay out of foul trouble to counter the Horns’ depth. The two players that would have evened the court inside for WVU, 6-4 Sr. K. Montgomery and 6-6 Fr. Schmidt have yet to play this season. Meanwhile, Texas has seasoned players in Imani, Kelsey, Sara and Jordan. Also, 6-3 Fr. F Olamide is available for the Horns. WVU does dribble penetrate a lot and the Horns will need to defend that without getting into foul trouble. Holmes is the go to player for WVU. Stop or slow her down and that will put a lot of pressure on the other players to make up her points. WVU will also look to get Lanay Montgomery more than her normal 6.5 looks inside where she is very effective finishing. That matchup between her and Imani on both ends should be great to watch. WVU will lean heavily on Lanay Montgomery to defend the paint against both the Texas posts and the Horns’ guards driving inside. Foul trouble inside for both teams will be critical.

Both teams are close in various stat categories. WVU likes the three more while Texas takes more shots inside the arc. This should be another close game between the two. Texas has a slight edge in rebounding while WVU has one in steals and blocks. Both do a good job getting to the FT line but do not take as much advantage as they could, with both hitting 67.1% from the FT line. Both teams have a deep rotation. Both run every chance they get. Both like to play inside out in the half court although Texas gets more production from their posts. WVU takes an average of 18 3s a game. It will be interesting to see if they challenge the Horns inside or increase their 3pt shooting. As long as Lanay Montgomery is patrolling the paint for the Mountaineers, the Horns will have the same decision to make. Whether the 3s are falling for either team could dictate the offensive flow of the game for the teams.
