Oklahoma (9-5) brings a 3-0 record back to Norman after a win in Lubbock. They will face off with a Texas team (13-1; 2-1) seeking to rebound from their first loss of the season and in conference play. Texas leads the series 25-22 after going 2-1 vs the Sooners last season. OU leads in Big 12 games 17-19. In conference games, OU is 2-0 at home while Texas is 0-1 on the road. Texas will be looking for their first win in Norman since 02/03/2010 while OU seeks to extend their home winning streak over Texas to five. .
OU brings three players averaging double figures in scoring: Gioya Carter (# 25, 5-9 Soph. G) at 17.0 ppg; Kaylon Williams (# 42, 6-3 RS Jr. F) and Peyton Little (# 10, 5-11 RS Soph. G) each averaging 11.0 ppg. Sharane Campbell-Olds (# 24, 5-10 Sr. G) at 8.7 ppg and Gabbi Ortiz (# 21, 5-9 Fr. PG) at 7.7 ppg provide capable scoring support. Carter (18-38, 47.4%), Little (12-33, 36.4%) and K. Williams (13-22, 59.1%) are the main shooters for OU. Campbell-Olds (8-18, 44.4%) and Ortiz (5-19, 26.3%) are the other Sooners that have reached double digit FG attempts in league play. Maddie Manning (# 23, 6-2 RS Soph. G) has the best FG% at 100% but has only taken 2 FGs in Big 12 play. LaNesia Williams (# 32, 5-7 Fr. G) and T’ona Edwards (# 2, 5-5 Soph. G) each has connected on 5-8 FGs (62.5%). OU ranks fourth in the league in 3pt % at 34.0%. Carter is the best 3pt shooter by percentage, hitting 5-8 for 62.5%. Little (2-13, 15.4%) and Ortiz (4-13, 30.8%) are the volume shooters from BTA. The Sooners have a total of four players connecting on 40% or better from BTA. The Sooners are second in the league in getting to the FT line. They have five players that are averaging at least 3 FTs a game: Carter (10-15, 66.7%), K. Williams (7-15, 46.7%), Little (7-10, 70.0%), Campbell-Olds (8-9, 88.9%) and Ortiz (9-10, 90.0%). L.Williams is also hitting over 70% from the FT line at 71.4% (5-7).
K. Williams is the leading rebounder for OU at 8.3 rpg. Carter adds 6.7 rpg while Campbell-Olds averages 5.3 rpg. Vionise Pierre-Louis (# 0, 6-4 Fr. C) adds 4.0 rpg coming in off the bench. OU spreads out the assists with Ortiz leading with 8. Carter has 7 and Little 6 assists. K. Williams has four of the Sooners’ 9 blocks. Led by K. Williams with five and Little and Ortiz each with four, six Sooners have at least three steals.
OU has started the same group in all three league games: Carter, K. Williams, Little, Campbell-Olds and Ortiz. They are also the ones that show up at the top of the stats chart in pretty much every category. Only Little is averaging over 32 mpg at 32.7 mpg with Carter second at 29.0 mpg. K. Williams, Campbell-Olds and Ortiz all average between 24 and 27 mpg. L. Williams, Edwards, Nicole Kornet (# 1, 6-1 Jr. G) and McKenna Treece (# 30, 6-4 Fr. C) have all gotten into the three league games and average between 13 and 9 mpg. Pierre-Louis has played in two league games and gets in for a 10.0 mpg average. That gives OU a 10 or 11 player rotation. Treece and Pierre-Louis give OU good height to put in when K. Williams needs a short break.
Horns have a new leading scorer for the first time in a while. Brady is averaging 10.7 ppg in Big 12 games. Nneka is second at 10.3 ppg. Nekia (9.7 ppg) and Empress (9.0) are on the verge of double digits. Three players are tied for most FGs made at 12: Brady (12-31, 38.7%), Nekia (12-15, 80.0%) and Empress (12-33. 36.4%). Nneka joins them in having made double digit FGs at 11-29 (37.9%). Nekia’s 8.0% from the field tops the team. Next is Imani at 42.9% on 3 of 7 shooting. Brady’s 4-12 (33.3%) leads Texas in 3pters made and attempted. Brooke at 3-10 (30.0%) is the only other Horn to have attempted at least 10 treys. Nekia has the highest percentage from BTA at 75.0% on 3 of 4. Celina is making 50.0% of her treys (2-4).Nneka’s 9 of 17 FTs (52.9%) are by far the most on the team with Brady’s 4-6 for 66.7% second on the team in FTs made and attempted. Empress (3-3) and Imani (2-2) are perfect from the FT line. Krystle joins them in hitting at least 70% of their FTs (3-4, 75.0%). As a team, the Horns are making 60.0% of their FTs.Although her double double streak ended in Ames, Nneka continues to average a double double with 12.0 rpg to go with her 10.3 ppg. That rpg puts her at the head of the line on her team and in the Big 12. Kelsey adds 5.7 rpg while Empress is also averaging 5.0 rpg while Brady contributes 4.0 rpg. Empress has nine assists to lead the team while Brady has seven. Celina is third with six. Five players each have two assists. Brady has five steals while Krystle has four. Seven others add between 3 and one steal. Our posts have fourteen of the team’s 15 blocks. Nneka has 8, Imani 3 and Kelsey 2. Empress adds the remaining block. Nneka is at 869 career rebounds and making a strong push to finish at a career 1000+ rebounds by the end of this season.
Brady, Nneka, Empress, Kelsey and Celina have started all three league games. Brady’s 32.7 mpg tops the team. Empress, at 31.3 mpg, is the other Horn over 30 mpg although Nneka is close to that at 29.3 mpg. Kelsey (26.3 mpg) and Brooke (21.7 mpg) are the other two averaging at least 20 mpg. With Ariel and Brianna out, the rotation is at no more than 10 with nine seeing action in all three games. Four Horns are averaging minutes in the teens.
Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas OU
Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Campbell (Olds (5-10 Sr. G)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Williams (6-3 RS Jr. F)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Little (5-11 RS Soph. G)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Carter (5-9 Soph. G)
Celina (5-8 Jr. G) Ortiz (5-9 Fr. G) [/pre]
Carter has been proficient in driving the lane and finishing at the rim. She also has the highest 3pt % in the league. A tough challenge for various Texas defenders, likely starting with Empress. An interesting matchup could be Brady on Little. Both are similar type players although Brady likely is stronger. Both are considered 3pt shooters but do other things well. OU could have trouble containing the Horns’ inside play. Nneka will be a tough matchup for Campbell-Olds. While OU has the height to battle Texas inside, two of those players are freshmen, Treece and Pierre-Louis.
It remains to be seen whether OU will use a zone extensively against the Horns similar to ISU. The Texas guards were able to hit the outside shot in the first half to open things inside a bit but Nneka and Kelsey had their worse game of the season finishing inside. They should get good looks inside and will need to finish strong.
Stats are Big 12 stats only.

OU is first in the league in scoring in conference games. Horns are fifth. In scoring defense, Horns are second with OU fourth. In scoring margin, they rank second (OU) and third (Texas). Texas will have an edge inside in this game. OU has less experience inside although their two 6-4 freshmen give them good height inside. Both teams will be able to rotate 10-11 players so fatigue should not be an issue with either. Texas is going to have to slow down OU. Horns average right at 60 ppg (60, 61 & 57) while OU has not scored less than 69 pts. OU and Texas have played two common opponents: KU and WVU. OU won 69-57 (KU) and 71-60 (WVU). Texas beat KU 60-46 and WVU 61-55. Both are strong rebounding teams with both using similar styles: a post as the primary rebounder with the guards helping out quite a bit. Thing is that Kelsey and Imani give Texas an edge over OU inside as they will be able to rotate the three while OU counters with one veteran post and two frosh, although pretty good ones. OU does come into the game confident about pulling out the win, due to their hot start in conference play. Texas has something to prove after that ISU loss.
