ISU will be in the pink when they host the Longhorns Sunday. For that matter, so will the Horns as both teams will play in pink unis. An online auction of the unis will be held to generate funds for the Kay Yow/WBCA’s fight against cancer. Coach G started her coaching career at ISU as a grad assistant in the 1985-86 season before going to Purdue as an assistant coach in 1986. Overall, she is 3-0 against ISU and this will be her first game in Ames as the head coach at Texas.
ISU is 12-0 at home this season and 4-0 in Big 12 games. The Horns bring a 2-2 Big 12 road record to Ames but they are 2-0 in their last two road games against Baylor and OSU. The Horns won a thriller in Austin last season, 59-56.
In conference play, the Horns are led by three players in double figures: Kat (13.4 ppg), Brit (12.1 ppg) and Ashleigh (10.1). Carla is averaging 6.9 ppg while 3 others are averaging between 5 and 5.4 ppg. Two others are at 4.7 and 4.3 ppg. Ashleigh is the most accurate shooter in Big 12 play at 56.3%. Among players that have taken at least 11 3s, Ashliegh (8-12, 66.7%), Kat (18-45, 40%), and Brit (12-34, 35.3%) are the main threats. Kat is the top rebounder with a 7.2 rpg average while six others are averaging between 3 and 3.7 rpg. Carla, with a 5.1 apg average, tops the team while three others are in double digits in assists. Lindsey leads with 17 blocks while Gayle adds 13 blocks. Ashleigh has 19 steals (2.1 spg) while Kat (10 steals) and Carla (11 steals) also are pretty handy in this category. While Ashleigh has come on in conference play, Erika has also shown a much more consistent ability to create her shot off the dribble. Pretty much every wing and guard can dribble penetrate and either find an open teammate or finish the shot. FTs continue to be a problem in conference play although the team percentage continues to climb slowly towards the season average of over 70%. The Horns need to take advantage of their ability to get to the FT line as seven of them have gotten to the FT line at least 20 times in Big 12 games. Unfortunately for the Horns, four of those are making between 57 and 47% of their FTs.
The ISU preview states that “All but one player on the Texas roster is shooting 40 percent or better from the field this season. Ashleigh Fontenette and Earnesia Williams are each shooting 51 percent from the floor. Three Longhorns have hit 29 or more three-pointers this season.” When the Horns are on, they are difficult to stop.
ISU also has three players in double digit scoring in Big 12 play. These are: Heather Ezell (# 15, 5-9 Sr. G, 13.2 ppg), Kelsey Bolte (# 11, 6-1 Soph. G, 11.2 ppg), and Nicky Wieben (# 5, 6-4 Sr. F, 10.2 ppg). Alison Lacey (# 4, 6-0 Jr. G, 8.0 ppg) and Amanda Nisleit (# 32, 6-0 Fr. F, 7.9 ppg) provide the primary scoring support. Ezell, Bolte, Wieben, and Lacey have all taken between 84 and 89 shots. Nisleit has taken 54 shots. No one else on the team has taken more that 22 shots in conference games. ISU has six players averaging double digit minutes. Ezell (34 mpg), Bolte (32 mpg) and Lacey (30 mpg) are all averaging over 30 minutes a game. Wieben, coming back from a knee injury suffered in last year’s Texas game, is averaging 25 mpg while Nisleit plays an average of 29 mpg. Denise Stuckey (# 10, 5-8 Jr. G) is the only other ISU player averaging in double digit minutes at 12 mpg. Four others average between 7 and 9 minutes per game. Ezell, Bolte and Nisleit have started all nine conference games. Wieben and Lacey have started 8 of 9 Big 12 games. Stuckey and Jocelyn Anderson (# 44, 6-4 Sr. F) have each started one conference game.
Ezell (28-55, 43.1%), Bolte (15-40, 37.5%), Lacey (8-35, 22.9%) and Nisleit (7-22, 31.8%) have taken 162 of the 185 3s ISU has taken in Big 12 games. Horns will know who not to lose track of. They also know they don’t want Ezell (78%), Wieben (80%) or Nieleit (76%) shooting FTs with the game on the line. Nieleit (6.6 rpg), Bolte (5.4 rpg) and Wieben (4.7 rpg) are the top rebounders for ISU. While Carla does most of the work distributing the ball, ISU has Ezell (3.0 apg) and Lacey (3.6 apg) share the load for ISU. Wieben with 0.9 bpg tops ISU while Ezell (16 steals) and Lacey (11 steals) lead ISU in that category.

This game is going to be between two of the best 3pt shooting teams in the league. Texas is second in 3pt FG%. ISU is 3rd. ISU is first in number of 3pters made per game while the Horns are fourth. Both teams are kinda weak offensively inside but pretty strong on the perimeter. There’s no question that the Horns will present a big challenge inside as long as both Ashleys stay out of foul trouble. It will be interesting to see if the Horns can dominate on the boards. Both Wieben and Anderson are 6-4 and ISU has a lot of 6-1 & 6-0 inside players to rotate in the post. Texas turns the ball over more than ISU but also forces more TOs than ISU does. Can the Horns force TOs and turn them into points? The Horns have several very good perimeter defenders, not to mention their ability to switch and still be able to cover. They will need to be on their best D to handle all the outside threats that ISU will throw at them. Of course, the same applies to ISU. Can they cover all the Texas scorers? They shut down OU’s top 3pt shooters although only Hand and Stevenson played significant minutes. They will have to cover Kat, Brit, Carla, Erika, and Ashleigh with at least two on the floor at the same time with up four on the floor at times. Texas has been getting excellent production from their bench in the last four games. The Horns’ bench is providing 22.2 ppg or 32% of the points. ISU’s bench is adding 8.2 ppg or 14% of the total.

Thankful for Texas and ISU fans, ESPN’s whiparound coverage is not supposed to apply to this game. Sure hope they don’t change their mind as I really don’t want to watch a closer, supposedly more exciting game. I want to see Texas and ISU go at it for the entire game. The game is on ESPN2 at 2:30 PM. KVET 1300AM will carry the game on the local radio. ESPN360.com will carry the webcast for those who don’t live in Texas or Iowa.
