ISU is one of two Big 12 teams that have winning records against Texas. Currently, the series stands at 11-15. The home teams have dominated with Texas holding an 8-3record at Austin and ISU 93- at Ames. ISU is 3-1 against Texas in the Big 12 tournament. The two teams split their games last season, each winning at home. Texas (13-0) is 2-0 in conference play. ISU (10-3) is 1-1 in conference after dropping a heartbreaker on the road to TCU, 86-84, giving up a 23 pt halftime lead.
ISU has three players averaging at least 10 ppg in Big 12 play: Brynn Williamson (# 23, 5-11 Sr. G/F) leads with 19.5 ppg; Fallon Ellis (# 32, 5-11 Sr. G/F) adds 11.0 ppg off the bench; and Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Jr. G) pitches in with 10.0 ppg. Five others complete the scoring in Big 12 games for the Hawkeyes: Jadda Buckley (# 11, 5-8 Jr. G) averages 8.5 ppg; Seanna Johnson (# 12, 5-10 Soph. G) adds 8.0 ppg; Emily Durr (# 3, 6-0 Fr. G) puts in 7.0 ppg; Nikki Moody (# 4, 5-8 Sr. G) contributes 6.5 ppg while Bryanna Fernstrom (# 6-5 Fr. C) averages 1.5 ppg. Williamson is averaging 5-12 per game in FGs (41.7%). Johnson, Moody, Blaskosky, Durr and Ellis all average between 6.5 and 7.0 FGs attempted per game. Ellis’ 61.5% from the field tops the team. Both Buckley and Blaskosky average 42.9% shooting. Williamson (7-19, 36.8%) and Blaskosky (5-11, 45.5%) are the main threats from behind the arc for ISU. But all players listed above have taken at least one three pters. The Hawkeyes rely heavily on their 3pters, having taken 49 of their 103 FGs from BTA. Williamson has taken 19 of her 24 FG attempts from BTA while Blaskosky has 11 of 14 FGs attempts from BTA. ISU is hitting 89.4% from the FT line in conference play. Johnson (6-6), Buckley (2-2), Durr (5-5) and Ellis (4-4) are all perfect from the FT line. Williamson (12-14, 85.7%) and Buckley (9-10, 90.0%) are the leaders in getting the FT line.
Johnson is the leading rebounder at 11.0 rpg while Williamson is averaging a double double with her 10.0 rpg to go with her 19.5 ppg. Williamson and Nakiah Bell (# 2, 5-5 Fr. G) lead in the steals with two each. Bell got hers in seven minutes versus TCU, the only league game she played in. ISU has six total blocks with Williamson, Johnson, Fernstrom, Blaskosky, Durr and Ellis all have one block each.
ISU has used an eight player rotation in Big 12 games. Williamson, Johnson, Moody, Blaskosky, and Fernstrom have started both league games. Bell and Madison Baier (# 34, 6-4 Jr. F/C) have played in one league game each. The other four players on the roster have not played in either league game. Claire Ricketts (# 30, 6-3 Fr. F) broke her left wrist in the season opener and has not played since game three. With a short bench, the Hawkeyes have three players averaging at least 30 mpg: Williamson (39.0 mpg ), Blaskosky (30.5 mpg) and Johnson (30.0 mpg). Buckley, Moody and Ellis all average right around 22 mpg. Durr (18.5 mpg) and Fernstrom (11.5 mpg) are the others in the rotation.
In news coming out today, ISU coach Fennelly said that playing sophomore guard Jadda Buckley, who missed three games with a “stress injury” in her right foot, will be a game time decision for the Texas game. Seems like she had a recurrence of symptoms.
Horns go into game three of the Big 12 round robin with two players in double digits: Nneka (11.5 ppg) and Empress (10.5 ppg). Brady (8.0 ppg), Brooke (7.5 ppg), Kelsey (7.0 ppg) and Nekia (7.0 ppg) all provide strong scoring support. Nekia tops the team in FG% at 85.7% (6-7). Empress leads in FGs made (9) and attempted (22) for 40.9%. Brooke (6-12), Kelsey (7-14) and Celina (3-6) ae all hitting 50% of their shots. Brooke (2-4, 50.0%) and Celina (1-1, 100%) are the only Horns to hit a 3pter in conference play heading into game three of the conference schedule. Six players total have attempted a trey for the Horns. Despite her continued woes at the FT line, Nneka leads the team in FTs made and attempted (7-13). Empress (3-3) and Imani (2-2) are perfect from the FT in two conference games while Krystle has hit 3-4 (75%).Nneka has seven straight double doubles. She is averaging 13.0 rpg to with her 11.5 scoring average in league play. Kelsey (5.0 rpg), Empress (4.5 rpg), Brady (3.5 rpg) and Imani (3.5 rpg) provide strong support on the boards. Empress has been the best in handing out assists in league play with an average of 2.5 apg. Celina (2.0 apg) and Brady (1.5 apg) are second and third in this category. Nneka has six blocks which matches ISU’s team total. Kelsey and Imani each adds two blocks apiece. In steals, Brady leads the way with five while Krystle has four and Brooke three.
Nneka, Empress, Brady, Kelsey and Celina have started both Big 12 contests. Brooke, Nekia, Krystle. Imani, and Tasia have seen action in both league games. Nine of the ten are averaging double digit minutes. Brady (33.0 mpg), Nneka (30.0 mpg) and Empress (29.0 mpg) are the top three in minutes played per game.
Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas ISU
Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Williamson (5-11 Sr. G/F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Fernstrom (6-5 Fr. C)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Johnson (5-10 Soph. G)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Blaskosky (5-7Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Jr. G) Moody (5-8 Sr. G) [/pre]
Fernstrom, although having a tough two Big 12 games, has been named the Big FOY twice this season. ISU has only four players over 6-2 but two have not played in conference games, Claire Ricketts (# 30, 6-3 Fr. F) and Jordan Jensen (# 6-2 Soph. F). Baier (6-4 Jr. C/F) only played for two minutes in one league game. Ellis has been the main inside player for the Hawkeyes. She will be giving up a lot of height inside at 5-11. That is probably a good reason why ISU has taken 49 treys of 103 FGs attempted in league play. Williamson has been their primary scorer at 19.5 ppg. Six of their 8 players have taken a three. Horns will need to be very much aware of not giving up open 3s. If Buckley is unable to go for ISU, that will be a big hit for the Hawkeyes. While Texas can and has played a zone, man to man is likely to be what the Hawkeyes will see most of the game.
Texas is going to go inside first, especially with that height advantage. Fernstrom will be preoccupied with Kelsey so that will leave Williamson to cope with Nneka. Although the Hawkeyes could use a zone extensively which will put the onus on the Horns’ perimeter players to find the soft spots in the zone. The game will still be to go inside-out for Texas. ISU is dependent primary on two players (Williamson and Johnson) while Texas spreads it out more although Nneka tends to get her double double consistently. She will be going for her eighth double double at Ames. She is now at 859 career rebounds, moving steadily towards 1000 in her career.

ISU runs a more patient game than Texas. They score more due to their ability to hit the 3. Texas has taken almost twice as many shots inside the arc (96) than ISU (54). Meanwhile, ISU takes three times as many treys as Texas (49-16). ISU is one of the top FT shooting teams in the league. Texas will need to keep from sending them to the FT line or get there twice as much to make up in quantity what ISU will make in quality. One area where Texas may be able to capitalize on is forcing TOs. ISU is averaging 21 TOs a game in league play. Texas is getting 8 steals a game. On paper, both teams are doing well rebounding the ball as ISU is at 39.5 with a rebounding margin of plus 8.5 to Texas’ 39. 0 rpg and plus 7.0 rebounding margin.
I expect Texas’ ability to score inside, hit the timely 3 and to outrebound ISU to help them pull out the win at Ames, a tough place to get a win. That may be the largest crowd the Horns will be playing in front of so far this season. I am assuming that a little cold weather won’t keep the fans from coming to the game. Weather for Ames Saturday is a high of 25. Practically sweater weather.
