Texas at ISU 01/23/21

These ISU girls must be pretty fragile because the slightest touch gets the whistle for them. Not so much on the other end...Big 12 officials...

This was a great team win and the best we have looked in quite a while on both sides of the ball. I see why teams play us in a zone because that dribble drive offense works very well especially with the guards we have and it's too much movement to guard. Whatever Vic said to them needs to be said every game

Play with that type of energy, focus, and patience and you'll win a whole lot of ballgames. Great win!

This was a wonderful game for the gals! Their energy was good from the get go. I liked all the movement. Only criticism is that Ebo needs to get in shape so she can spell Charli.

Yeah, but Joens has NEVER had 3 fouls called on her at Hilton...at least ONE was for the arm bar...about time....:rolleyes1:

Fantastic game. And Charli did exactly what we needed her to... but fouling out up 12 with under a minute left... Charli! You need to break that foul habit. It didn’t seem to matter tonight but IT MATTERS. Ok. Off my silly soap. 22/19 is fine by me anytime and anywhere.

One other comment - if that announcer said one more time that we didn’t want to get in a 3 point competition with Iowa State I was going to scream. I know it’s their bread and butter but we beat them at the three last time. We had 9 to their 4. Tonight we had 6 to their 8 but we both shot 33%

Gaston was a big factor on offense and defense in the last game. She is unavailable. With both Gaston and Warren out, I am not seeing how the Horns will match up, particularly on the defensive end. For Iowa State, Kristen Scott and Ashley Joens will start and play most of the game. My guess is that Celeste and Karisma will have to guard Joens, which will likely lead to foul trouble. Joens is second behind Charlie Collier in FTA and makes .878% of them.

Ebo is back but has looked out of condition. She has looked slower than usual getting up and down the floor and appears to be playing limited minutes. At her best, I can't see her being as good a combo with Collier against Iowa State's 4 guard line-up with Ashley Joens at the four.

Offensively, Texas shot better than usual from three and Iowa State shot poorly. That combination is unlikely to happen again. I do hope Collier will work hard inside where she has her best advantage over Iowa State.

Edit: I was pessimistic before the last game so you all have good reason to pooh pooh my pessimistic outlook,
You totally jinxed them! And, I am grateful you did.

Great energy! I wish Vic wouldn’t have pulled Charlie. She was in a zone and I feel we we on the edge of a blowout.
She hadn't taken a break all half. And, he might have wanted to give her a breather and try to prevent her from picking up her second foul.

Different than in some other road games, Charli and the staff managed her foul situation well this game. Her foul in the first quarter was near the 3-point line as she tried to get through an ISU screen; she stayed composed, and didn't pick up another foul the rest of the half (I think). Her second foul also came far away from the basket; I don't like our post players doing that. I lost track of her subsequent fouls, but she seemed to pick up her last two in the final minutes when the game was pretty much in hand.

So, despite fouling out, she played a lot of minutes when it counted the most.

Charli came out focused like I haven't seen. She was a force under the basket. I think the rest of the team fed off of that. This is the best I've seen them play, and perhaps is an indication of where Vic is taking them. Great victory!

Always happy to get a road win. Someone will have to check, but this is the first time we've swept ISU (2 regular season games) in forever. Last couple of years, Karen won at Ames, but lost in Austin. Maybe in our Elite 8 season we did; can't remember.

I was wondering going into the season if Vic's defensive mindset/strategy would be able to nullify the kind of offense Fennelly runs. I like what I've seen. Hope Vic will continue to have Bill's number in the future.

Other random thoughts:

- Joanne doesn't realize how good she can be offensively; hope her confidence continues to grow

- Shay also needs to shoot more (when she's open); her 3 point shot before the end of the first half was huge

- Team stayed calm the entire game, even when ISU hit those consecutive 3 pointers to slice the lead. Don't believe we ever lost the lead despite it being trimmed to one point

- Still missing way too many layups; but, at least in this game, so did ISU

Couldn’t watch it live but did see the start of the second half. Thought I was bad luck so turned it off. Saw ISU execute a few back to back drives/layups/easy shots (fortunately they missed some) and I thought we were in for a rough second half. Glad that we pulled this one out.

Karisma playing a full game is awesome. Glad to see coaches feel she must be stepping up.

This was great. Didn't recognize us from Lubbock. Credit to Vic for using the weave, which is a thing of beauty, and for moving Charli around, not just parking her in the low post. Joanne and Celeste, and needless to say Charli, were fantastic. Everyone played well. I hope Ebo can get more up to speed.

My question is how bad of a shape was she in when the season started and she practiced with the team waiting to get cleared to play. She huff and puffs like a freshman who hadn't done any conditioning before arriving in Austin!

I think that really made all the difference in the world. Allowing Collier to move around opened up much of the offense. Setting her screens for her to pop out and Allowing her to attack off the dribble is what works with a player like Collier. Very exciting to watch

  • Where was this type of weaving, dribble-drive offense all this season? Was it because ISU stubbornly clung to their man defense?
  • Finally, fewer forced passes to Charli in the paint - resulting in fewer turnovers
  • Surprised to see Joanne the second leading scorer, but then if you make three 3's including the rarely seen 4-pointer, I guess that makes sense
  • Shay seems a bit sloppy handling the ball sometimes
  • Karisma playing the full 40:00? Whew. I guess with Audrey's situation, there is no chance to sub out when Vic starts getting displeased with her play 4 minutes into the start of each game
  • I wonder what "life lesson" Vic was imparting to Charli when she fouled out near the end of the game?
  • But still Charli was playing as smooth as her #1 pick-in-the-next-draft projections
  • Love the Celeste hustle!

Remember that Ebo missed games after the holidays for an “undisclosed reason.” There may be reasons she seems out of shape.

Couple of thoughts:

  • The way he referenced Lauren Ebo a couple of times... it just seemed like he was holding back. I hope she is ok and I look forward to her playing her best game.
  • Development. Developing. Develop. Man oh man he can’t say that enough. Players getting better. We’ve all been begging for that. Loved hearing it.

JAT was the difference maker this time. Maybe the best game of her career. Not only with the 3pt shooting, but she played great defense too. And Ashley is so quick, she's going to get a lot of steals. If she could improve her shooting she could be better than Brooke.

Lauren definitely needs to get in shape. She's a talented shooter inside. This team needs her bad. Apparently she didn't work out when she was on leave. That's not a criticism, just an observation as we don't know why she took the leave.

Racer,
To your points about why we haven't been doing this before - Vic has lamented on several occasions that they just haven't been able to get in the practice time he would have wanted. This is a new offense for the team and I'm going to be optimistic and chalk this up to progression. I think we saw in this game where they are headed. I think it will get better and better (with perhaps occasional backsliding, but that's the learning process).

This was a great game. Will it be rebroadcast on LHN?

I haven’t seen it listed so evidently not. I taped it and watched it again. Wow. It was a thing of beauty to see the way they moved the ball. And that defense! Wow. Loved it.

Edit: It’s not easy to find in the listings but it’s available OnDemand in the ESPN+ app
