Horns have to settle down. They are starting to get frustrated, especially Empress when she is face guarded when trying to receive the inbound pass. Texas is going to have to make an adjustment there to get another option.
Nneka drains them both, that's what we need. And Nekia Jones with a 3 to cut the lead in half!
I gotta say, Nina Davis doesn't play like a freshman in my opinion. Very adept combo forward, seems to understand the game very well, not super looking forward to 3 more years of her. With Sims I can at least console myself that she's gone after this season.
Oddly enough, she's below 33% from the floor tonight, so we actually are making her work harder than my previous post indicated, it just seems like she's making everything.
It's not even that many of the calls are just objectively flat-out wrong, but the standard seems to be "if there's any chance that it might possibly have been a foul I will always blow the whistle" which is just damn annoying to play with or watch no matter which team is winning.
okay, this is going to look worse that it was. Texas is unable to get a bucket and keeps fouling Sims. Hopefully these won't be the refs when the rematch comes up in Austin.
Us having to foul to stop the clock for the final 80 seconds or so makes the game look like a domination. We were in it the whole way up until then, but it certainly showed a couple of things we ought to fix....
Yeah the FTs for the Bears were ridiculous. Good effort from the Horns, dbl dbl (again) for Nneka, and five players in double figures. We'll take them down in Austin!
The officials were so pathetically inconsistent it's ridiculous. And what a classless move by Kim allowing her kids to score with under 30 seconds rather than run the clock down.
This game did point out one of the things I've always loved about Kim, and hated about Karen. And that's her eagerness to get after the officials. You can say what you want about how opponents perceive her demonstrative actions along the sidelines, but the bottom line is that it WORKS!! That's the reason ALL of her teams get to the line more than their opponents, that's another reason she has an all American that averages 40 points a game with about 28 of them coming from FT's. Karen needs to fight for the girls more and take a technical every now and again. You would be amazed at how most teams will seem to rally around their head coach.
I'm pleased with the effort because whenever you can stay within single digits of a top 10 team you can't be upset when you fall short. But we do have to get over the hump and start to win some of these games. There are no moral victories at the elite level of athletics.
Hate the picks that Nneka and Imani are asked to call way out beyond the arc; they have no business out there, IMO. Rick Barnes used to do the same thing with his post players, and the result is usually a foul so far off the basket that it's stupid.
Hated the inconsistency with the fouls. Our guards would put a hand on Odyssey, and it was a foul on us. Odyssey would put her arm on our guards (defensively and offensively), and it was a foul on us. Odyssey just doesn't get called for fouls, even when she volunteers to get called for them!
Can't believe Aston didn't pull Imani as soon as she picked up her third foul; perhaps she had no choice as Lang had three, as well. Still, you just knew she was gonna get her fourth foul right away. Did she ever come back in the game?
Nekia Jones needs more touches. Brady is all hustle, and she made a big difference rebounding on our missed free throws in the first half.
I haven't said anything this season, but Chassidy did not start this season in the same physical shape as she played the last three seasons. It affects how well she moves without the ball.
Much better offense the last two road games versus what we saw at TCU. Not sure what exactly has changed, but something definitely has been adjusted.
The bottom line for me is that I continue to see improvement ever since the TCU game; gotta learn from this loss and keep playing as a team.
We played really well and we will beat this team in Austin, but I don't understand why Jones isn't given more time on the floor. In 14 minutes of play she scored 11 pts - second only to Nneka. Her 3 rebs were the team's fourth best. And she doesn't get in foul trouble - only one in a game where almost everyone had 4. She hustles. She brings an energy that is exciting to watch. What gives?
Jones is fantastic, needs more playing time. I haven't checked the statistics, but don't we usually get called for more fouls than our opponents? It is possible to play great defense without fouling much. (Look at the Spurs.) This is a coachable skill. I know we need all out effort and some risk taking, but the players are capable of doing some quick analysis about the probability of creating something positive versus getting a foul. Playing all out and playing great D doesn't have to mean fouling the hell out of the other team. Of course, I agree that Sims and Baylor got great home cooking.
I agree about Nekia getting more playing time, but she may not be in shape to play more minutes. She was injured and didn't start playing till well into the season. It seems to me they are gradually increasing her playing time.
Nekia has to get into better shape in order to play more minutes. Right now she's used as a mismatch at the 4 spot when Aston wants to go small and put Neka at the 5, or give her a break all together. If she could defend the 3 position consistently she would probably start. But her in game shape and foot speed make her a liability.
I agree that Nekia needs to be in better shape to play more minutes but, as Rexy mentioned, she was injured earlier. She is working hard to get in better shape and also to lose weight and there is a noticeable difference between now and at the start of the season. At this time, her ability to play 10-15 minutes is great, due to the number of posts we have who usually don't get into foul trouble like they did yesterday. I consider that an anomaly. Nekia's ability to hit the 3 consistently and her ability to handle the ball already give her the ability to play a stretch four. Not many are going to overpower her inside when she posts up, either. She will continue to provide headaches for opposite coaches as she continues to be able to play more minutes.
I have to give props to BU's Davis. Her play cancelled out Nneka's. She is going to be fun to watch in the coming seasons, whether she continues to play inside or moves to the wing. Sims gets the benefit of a lot of calls. She likes to push off with her off arm and refs call defenders for impeding her progress when she does that. When our guards, especially Chas who got called twice for that move, did the same, they got the foul, not the defender.
Gotta feel sorry for an improving Tech that comes in Wed. You know the Horns are going to be angry about this game and Tech is going to get the brunt of that. Looking forward to seeing Amber Battle. She should get consideration for first team Big 12.
