The big game this weekend will be in Waco as the Baylor Lady Bears take on the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at 6:30 pm. Horns will roll in on a two game winning streak. Baylor has won three straight after being upset at Kansas. Coach Aston spend one season as associate head coach at Baylor working with Coach Mulkey before getting a head coaching position at North Carolina Charlotte. The personnel and strategy moves employed by both are going to be interesting to follow throughout the game. Injuries and fouls will impact those decisions.

Nneka is hitting 45.7% on 8.8 shots a game. Chas averages 8.8 shots and hits 42.9% of them. Kelsey has the best percentage from the field (55.9%) on 4.3 shots a game. Davis, with 76 FG attempts, is second on the team in shots attempted. Sune Agbuke (# 22, 6-4 Jr. P) is the most accurate shooter for Baylor at 54.1% (20-37). All of the posts for Baylor that average at least 10 minutes are making at least 50% of their FGs: Agbuke, Davis (38-76, 50%); Khadijiah Cave (# 55, 6-2 Fr. P; 13-25, 52%) and Kristina Higgins (# 44, 6-5 Soph. P; 9-17, 52.9%). They account for a solid 25.7 ppg, 33% of Baylor’s average of 77.1 ppg. Only three players have hit a three in conference play: Sims (26-56, 46.4%), Makenzie Robertson (# 14, 5-9 Sr. G; 17-45, 37.8%) and Imani Wright (# 20, 5-9 Fr. G; 7-29, 24.1%). Projected starting lineups:
Texas
#2, Celina Rodrigo, 5-8 Soph. G
#3, Nneka Enemkpali, 6-1 Jr. F
#24, Chassidy Fussell, 5-10 Sr. G
#32, Brady Sanders, 5-11 Soph. G
#40, Kelsey Lang, 6-5 Fr. C
Baylor
#22, Sune Agbuke, 6-4 Jr. P
#13, Nina Davis, 5-11 Fr. F
#2, Niya Johnson, 5-8 Soph. G
#14, Makenzie Robertson, 5-9 Sr. G
#0, Odyssey Sims, 5-8 Sr. G
There are going to be some very interesting matchups in this game. Agbuke and Davis vs Lang and Nneka will make the matchup in the post a good one to watch. The reserves for Texas, Imani, Gigi and Nekia will be challenged by BU’s Cave and Higgins. Cave and Nekia especially will be a battle inside. For Baylor, Sims presents a problem. With the projected starting lineup, does Texas play a zone or go man to man? In man to man, Brady may draw the assignment on Sims or she could guard Johnson while Celina defends Sims. Another possibility would be starting Empress for either Chas or Brady and have her matchup with Sims from the start. One thing whoever is guarding Roberson cannot do is lost track of her. She’s on a hot streak and needs to be trying to shoot over a defender, not getting uncontested shots. An issue for Agbuke is her tendency to get in foul trouble. She has fouled out of three of the 8 league games they have played. Neither Cave nor Higgins are the defensive stopper Agbuke is. Baylor will have to contend with Nneka and Imani inside as well as with the shooting of Chassidy and Brady from BTA.
This game will hinge on which team can run their offense, rebound and get back in defense. Other than Baylor’s margin of winning and their scoring, there’s not a big difference in the teams’ stat lines. The defense of both could make this an ugly game as far as scoring goes. Texas will have to reduce their turnovers to stay in this game. Both teams are deep, with Baylor going nine deep and Texas 11 deep.
The game will be on Fox Sports SW at 6:30 pm. Plenty of time to watch the Texas men take on Kansas at 3 pm before watching this game.
